Warning: Due to how the game was released and the first few patches, do not trust the average reviews rating for this game. The game had performance issues at launch but they have been fixed in the first patches. A controversial puzzle was made easier in 1.008 due to some negative reviews. Patch 1.009 went further and removed a lot of puzzles making most of the mid and late game trivial and flavorless. This was reverted in 1.010 due to a barrage of negative reviews. As such, the average review rating oscillated greatly over time and some of them no longer accurately reflect the current state of the game. This review was originally made in response to the 1.010 patch notes asking for feedback. It has now been edited to be more informative. It is written from the perspective of a veteran LoT1 and LoT2 player who beat the game on the highest difficulty. It will cover the positive, controversial and negative aspects. Due to the game's genre and author's vision, this game has a lot of aspects that might be amazing for some but detrimental for others. As such, this review will put the highlight on the more controversial aspects. Positive LoT3 is a great dungeon crawler that improves on the previous entry on most aspects. The plot is better, it has better QoL and a lot of new tools and and system are added throughout the game to keep the experience fresh. The puzzles are challenging but reasonable. Compared to LoT2, the characters overall felt more balanced and had more depth than LoT2. There are some outliers but they are nowhere near as bad as LoT2. Controversial Drops are based on the difficulty. On the highest difficulty, money/exp/rare drops are better to reduce the amount of farming required to adjust the party against certain bosses. As a side effect, this make exploration easier than on the other difficulties. Difficulty is set early on in the game and can only be lowered afterwards. Bosses can be refought later in the game and beating bosses on the highest difficulty is necessary to unlock certain skills. For Normal/Hard difficulty player, having to go through some bosses twice, potentially in short succession, can be repetitive or annoying. This is sometimes expressed in negative reviews. Please note that it doesn't affect players on the highest difficulty at all as those skills will be naturally unlocked after beating the appropriate bosses. While the plot is arguably better than LoT2, it can get very wordy in the late game. Most notably, after beating a challenging boss, it can be difficult to appreciate the writing when the number one priority is to leave the dungeon as soon as possible to save progress. Even though the characters are overall better balanced, some of them are now much more complex. Characters now each have an extensive skill tree. Compared to 2, characters start much weaker but have a much wider range of options in the late game. Most characters now have additional resources or requirements on their spells (Can only be used on turns that are multiple of X, Cooldown of Y turns after use). For some characters, it's very intuitive and make for fun gameplay loop. For others, it can get quite complex, RNG-based (Z% chance to lose the buff at the start of each turn) or not worth using in practice if the characters have skills with no requirement and better pay-off. This can also get exhausting to keep track of as the game throws a large amount of units throughout the game. Throughout the mid to late game, a wide range of systems and mechanics are introduced to make characters stronger and grinding easier. While completely optional, this favors over-specializing around a few top-end characters in a game that prides itself in its character diversity. When combined with the overall characters complexity, this makes team building in the mid to late game overwhelming and adds a significant amount of menuing. On a similar note, some characters are considered "Elites" characters. The party can only have a certain amount of Elite characters at once. In theory, this system is here to prevent characters that are too powerful from trivializing the game and encouraging creative team building around them. In practice, some of them are hardly better or even weaker than average making the restriction feel unnecessary. Some bosses have buffs that prevent them from taking excessive damage each turn. This turns some boss fights into a puzzle where the most efficient way to deal damage over time has to be found. As a result, this means that some of the slower characters with higher damage outputs do not get to perform as well as the did in previous entries. Negative On the negative side, due to how some characters are recruited, some of them don't get a lot of dialog or don't even get any at all. LoT2 did a better job at introducing the minor characters and selling their traits and personalities. At the moment, some crucial information are hidden from the players. The highest difficulty nerfs the effects of stronger equipments to prevent the players from beating early-mid game bosses with late game gears or upgrades. The exact formula isn't told in game so it's unclear what the optimal gear is for each boss without significant testing. Conclusion If you like challenging RPG or dungeon crawlers like EO, you will most likely love this game. It is quite innovative and the QoL make it very enjoyable to play. More casual RPG players may find the game difficult or not to their liking. This game is still getting actively patched and will most likely get even better over time, especially after post game and plus disk are released.

Be warned, this is a puzzle game which isn't clearly shown in the steam page. You'll be wandering the labyrinths, hysterically pounding your head on each wall to find a secret passage. Only to realize you have to walk around the entire map to take a step further. Not just the maps, but the lunatic bosses as well. Damage cap and forced downgrades force you to approach them as puzzles and crack their gimmicks. I repeat, THIS IS A PUZZLE GAME. You will not have a great time if you hate puzzles. I'll go over some tips and complaints. -I recommend playing as normal difficulty and rematching lunatic bosses once you have more options. -Aya is a cheat code. -Cirno is another cheat code. -Damage Rumia is probably the best mob farmer with her unconditional black hole that kills everything with a beating heart. -If map puzzles are too much, consider coming back to this game later. There should be a map on the wiki or a guide video by then, or a refund. The map puzzles are unavoidable most of the time. -Formation command is very useful. You could save one from an AOE or counter immediately. Also characters in the rear are healed each turn. -When dealing with bosses, be sure to check their status to learn their gimmicks. -If a boss' attack is wiping you out, see what kind of resistance it uses. If it's a fire attack modified by def, you should take fire res and def. ----- Now, the complaints. Biggest complaints are UI and QoL. When I first started, I couldn't guess how much damage I'll do. Now I'm near the end of the game and I still can't. I just throw whatever worked so far and pray it'll kill, which often does. Skills are way too damn conditional and often times complicated. Most of the mid game skills are "... only usable on turns of multiplier of 2 +1 when the user has PSN, the planets must align and ruin must come to our family. Has a 12% chance to grant 'Neva-gana-letudown' buff which has 50% chance to roll a D12 to... etc." Did I boot up Yugioh? I thought I deleted it for good. Most of the times it's better to use skills with immediate effects than the restrictive ones. Actually, it's almost always better since the return isn't big enough. Characters that are 'good once mastered' are usually overshadowed by 'simple and good, no strings attached' type of characters like Rumia with her Night Bird. Skill upgrades should be shown in battle. My puny little brain cant remember 8 different skill upgrades for 11 characters. It's especially harder since most characters use their own unique stacks and systems. It's actually heinous how little info is shown in this game, almost criminal. For example, If a skill "Fireball - deal 5 damage" is upgraded to deal more damage to debuffed targets, the skill box should show that. NOT just the original blank fire ball. There should be a better way to see characters' skills. To see a non-party character's skill I got to "visit classy room -> add the character into my party -> get out to the base menu -> open another menu -> open skill tree." This game has dozens of characters and skills, but trying out new comp is a chore since it's hard to check characters' skills. How about allowing us to see their skillset in the classy room list? A lot of the effects are too vague. PHY resist lv4 sounds fancy and all but what does it actually do? Numbers please? A lot of the awakened skills suggest I'll get stronger but doesn't tell me how. I can never tell which is better; 50 more PHY resist stat or PHY res lv 4. I understand why the damage caps exist but I feel like it's only hurting slow hitters. Slow hitters are especially harder to use since they cant do what they are supposed to do; charging up for a big blow. It's better to quickly kill mobs when farming for TP. They are not particularly tanky until they get turns so enemies could kill them before their first turn, and bosses have damage cap so the big damage isn't even delivered properly. Yuugi and Suika spend the first several turn dilly-dallying to push out massive damage only to realize that Rumia and Chirno have out-damaged them through the damage cap. Their long awaited blow? Yeah it became 1/10 due to damage cap. What a bummer. Onis just cant compete with the little ones. Aya is the exact opposite. She is the fastest speedster in the game and she's practically god among men, favored by the systems. I haven't met a single enemy where Aya isn't viable, and I'm not complaining. It's satisfying to resort to her whenever I get frustrated while dealing with lunatics. Putting strict damage cap on every boss is a very questionable choice. It completely denies big damage comp and forces the player to find the characters the dev wants. It becomes a guessing game real quick, not a strategy game. It's better to not have damage caps and give the players the option to go whatever comp they want. Y'know, the option to choose who I want. It's what the steam page says, "Which of the many girls will you choose?" I WANT TO CHOOSE ONIS AND MAKE BIG FAT JUICY NUMBERS APPEAR ON MY SCREEN. WHY MUST YOU DENY ME MY FUN. Downgrading stats in lunatic is also very questionable. I get that you wanted to prevent stomping them over with over-leveled characters but downgrading just feels like my efforts are stolen. Also, it would greatly help if the game would specify how my characters are affected when rematching lunatics. My stats are down by what standards? Items are clearly affected as well but I can't tell how exactly my stats are butchered. Why are high level skills still there when my levels are now lower? Path finding is in between frustration and satisfaction. Puzzles aren't impossible and are kind of fun when I solve them but gets frustrating at times. There is a way to skip them but it's not available whenever I need it. Those who don't want to deal with lunatics should be able to unlock all the characters. Missing out some materials that will be farmable later doesn't feel bad. HOWEVER, missing a waifu is intolerable. ---- For the record, I like this game. Mixing and matching characters clicks my reptilian brain, and this game has a lot of characters for its genre. I'll keep having fun in normal mode with all the waifus, trying out new parties. Just as the founding fathers intended.

Upd: Dev has reverted the dungeon changes, the game is good again and does not require downgrading. Below is an old review that is no longer relevant. --- --- --- The game was near perfect before the 1.009 update in which most dungeons were gutted to be as boring as possible because a vocal minority lacked the brainpower to solve some simple puzzles and bullied the dev into destroying their work. Thankfully you can still play the un-gutted version of the game by downloading an old version (process is not simple but doable, google how to downgrade a game on steam. Manifest for v1.008 is "3067930 3067931 8627437008054225219")

PS: This game defaults to Integrated CPU. Switch it to use your GPU and turn on VSync - it fixes a lot of problems in the negative reviews. Quick review to start, since I want to play more. Being a fan of the LoT series and having spent hundreds of hours on it, I have been waiting 10 years for this game to release. I devoured the demo and loved it. The extended game should be even better. It's everything you'd want in a dungeon crawler JRPG - interesting character builds, tactically-challenging enemies, optional grinds, complex teambuilding, and some puzzle elements. It has a few systems I wish other RPGs would adopt (e.g. the equipment system making 'trash' drops exciting, the difficulty/challenge level systems, clear tutorials and transparent systems). The developer will likely add more content in the future in the form of Plus Disks (DLC) down the line as well, as is tradition. At this price point it's definitely a steal for those who love turn-based, party RPGs. It's a gameplay-focused game, so don't expect a masterpiece of a story (though it's actually decent). You don't need to know anything about Touhou to enjoy the game aside from a few inside jokes here and there. The game provides enough context and introductions that it actually serves as a pretty good gateway into Touhou, honestly. Going to play more now.

Gameplay: This is the main reason I’m hooked. The combat is turn-based and it feels very “system heavy” in a good way. Building a team, choosing skills, managing turns, and planning around weaknesses is actually fun, not just something you do because you have to. A lot of fights feel like small puzzles: what to bring, what to protect against, when to go all-in, when to play safe. I also really like how much freedom you have in party building and experimenting. When you finally find a setup that clicks, it feels earned. Progression / Difficulty: The game can be hard, but it’s the kind of hard I enjoy. When I lose, I usually feel like it was my mistake or my team was not ready, not that the game was unfair. It pushes you to think, adapt, and improve your builds. And when you come back stronger and win, it feels really satisfying. Exploration: Exploring the Labyrinth is simple, but addictive. The loop of “go deeper, get resources, unlock new options, go deeper again” works on me every time. I like that it feels like a real journey where you slowly expand what you can handle, instead of just walking forward and pressing attack. Story / Characters: I was somewhat interested in the story of this game but didn't come to expect much. Yet I ended up getting really invested in it. The vibe is fun and mysterious, and the cast makes the adventure feel alive. If you like Touhou characters, it’s just cool to have them together in a game where they feel like an actual party, not just icons you collect. Soundtrack: The music is really good. It fits the mood of exploring, fighting bosses, and getting deeper into the Labyrinth. I also like that it doesn’t get annoying even after many hours, which is important in a dungeon crawler. Some of the OST is nice to listen on its own as well for me personally. Final thoughts: I can recommend it if you like turn-based combat, party building, and dungeon crawlers that respect your brain. This review might still change once I finish the game, but for me so far it’s my personal GOTY of 2026. Also, Ran, Alice and Reimu are best waifus.
