July 2025
Lost Castle, developed by Hunter Studio and published by Another Indie, is a charming yet challenging action RPG with roguelike elements that blends hand-drawn visuals, fast-paced combat, and cooperative gameplay into a tight, satisfying package. Released on Steam in 2016, the game quickly gained a dedicated fan base thanks to its approachable mechanics, quirky humor, and replayable design. At first glance, it might seem like a standard side-scrolling brawler, but Lost Castle offers enough depth and variety to make it stand out in a crowded genre. The premise is straightforward: a once-great castle has been overrun by demons and corrupted forces, and treasure hunters from across the land—controlled by players—descend upon it in hopes of riches and glory. The narrative is intentionally light and tongue-in-cheek, filled with humorous item descriptions, goofy enemies, and a cartoonish art style that contrasts sharply with the dark themes of corruption and demonic invasion. The game doesn’t rely heavily on storytelling, but it delivers just enough to give context to its environments and encounters, while its tone keeps things lighthearted despite the constant threat of death. Gameplay in Lost Castle follows a classic beat-’em-up formula infused with roguelike mechanics. Players choose a hero and begin at the castle gates, equipped with a random weapon and a basic skill. From there, each run is procedurally generated, with randomly placed rooms, enemies, and loot. As players progress through the dungeon-like levels, they’ll collect gear, potions, and magical relics that significantly alter their combat effectiveness and playstyle. The combat itself is deceptively simple—players can attack, dodge, and use items—but different weapon classes (swords, spears, bows, axes, and more) introduce subtle mechanics and rhythm to each fight. Some weapons offer sweeping crowd control, others precise, high-damage strikes, and all can be enhanced by magical effects or passive bonuses. One of Lost Castle’s greatest strengths is its variety. Despite the roguelike structure, no two runs feel the same due to the sheer number of weapons, items, enemy types, and room configurations. Each area of the castle—from the haunted woods to the infernal chambers—is populated with its own themed hazards and bosses, requiring players to adapt quickly. While the difficulty curve can be steep, particularly for newcomers, the game rewards learning and perseverance. Death, as in many roguelikes, is inevitable and often frequent. However, players earn soul points after each run, which can be spent on permanent upgrades like health boosts, better starting equipment, or new character classes. This meta-progression system provides a tangible sense of advancement and helps smooth the difficulty spikes over time. Visually, Lost Castle is vibrant and appealing, with hand-drawn 2D sprites and animations that lend the game a storybook quality. The character designs, especially the grotesque bosses and goofy minions, strike a perfect balance between creepy and comical. Every weapon and item has a distinct look, and attacks feel weighty and responsive. While the graphics are relatively simple, they are polished and consistent, giving the game a strong visual identity. The music and sound design support this with upbeat battle tracks and satisfying audio cues, though the soundtrack isn’t particularly memorable and can feel repetitive during extended play sessions. The game shines even brighter in multiplayer, where up to four players can join forces locally or online. The cooperative mode adds a new layer of strategy, as players can revive one another, combine tactics, and share loot. However, the chaos of four-player brawling can also make it harder to track your character or avoid enemy attacks, particularly during boss fights. Despite this, multiplayer significantly enhances the game’s replay value and makes it a perfect pick for short, engaging sessions with friends. The online functionality is generally stable, though occasional connectivity issues or desynchronization can occur depending on the host’s network. Despite its many strengths, Lost Castle isn’t without flaws. The early-game reliance on RNG can be frustrating, especially when saddled with underwhelming starting weapons or unfavorable room layouts. The combat, while enjoyable, lacks the deeper combo systems or precision mechanics of more sophisticated brawlers, which may limit its long-term appeal for hardcore action fans. Additionally, the humor—while often effective—can occasionally fall flat, and the lack of strong narrative depth means story-driven players might not find as much to latch onto. That said, Lost Castle succeeds in its primary goal: delivering a fun, accessible, and addictive roguelike experience that doesn’t overstay its welcome. It’s the kind of game that invites players back for “just one more run” with its mix of challenge, loot discovery, and chaotic fun. Whether playing solo or with friends, the game offers a satisfying loop of growth and experimentation. It might not redefine the genre, but it confidently carves out its own niche with personality, polish, and a genuine sense of fun. For fans of roguelikes, beat-’em-ups, or cooperative games, Lost Castle remains a highly worthwhile gem on Steam. Rating: 8/10

Pros: - Replayability - Great for local co-op Cons: - Clunky controls - Riddled with bugs. Only came across a game-breaking bug once, the rest are mainly weapon skills not activating. - Most weapon skills are just cosmetically different. The effects are underwhelmingly similar. - Lack of skill description and damage output. There's a myriad of things to pick on, but they got many things right too. Giving it a thumbs up for many hours of fun playing local co-op with friends. Please fix the bugs.
