Going Under is a fun roguelike that is a cynical game wrapped in a bubbly corporate slop parody artstyle, harkening back to the times where people could actually find internships. The gameplay is fun, making the most of its weapon durability system by allowing you to basically use anything thats not nailed down and within arms reach to be a weapon to swing, shoot, or throw. Im addition to that, there are powerups you gain throughout the game and the abilities you unlock by bonding with your coworkers. The artstyle is well-made and mocks the corporate deco artstyle without being bogged down by it, making for a fun experience. The story and themes are parodies of some of the worst the gig economy has to offer, unfortunately meaning it has aged rather well in that department. Finally, ive been listening to the soundtrack for years now due to how solid it is. Overall, a very worthy buy.
It's fine. Fun, even. The concept is great, the characters are funny, the art is nice. But it feels like there's a real disconnect within the gameplay. On one hand, everything is a lot. Things are on fire and/or exploding most of the time. You'll stack so many abilities that you no longer recognise yourself or your surroundings. It's goofy and cartoonish. On the other, your health is a precious resource and you need to be careful. Even with assist mode on, I felt like I was being slowly whittled down by explosions I didn't know were coming or enemies attacking me with no charge-up/starting a parry before my attack lands. Food drops aren't too common, so I found myself using almost all my cash on food in shops which still would leave me below max health. This could be a skill issue, and might not stop you enjoying the game - but it's something to note. If you can get past that, the rest of the game is great.
Low key one of my fave games. Fun fighting beat-em-up style action, cute bite sized story and nice art. It´s both frustrating and relaxing at the same time (bit of a souls-like energy), but when you get into it time flies. Nice pickup at reasonable price during sales. Only complaint is the unfixed bugs you encounter during overtimes (6-7 mostly). It´s been years since the game was patched so there is little chance it gets fixed. If not for that I would give the game 9/10, but with the ruined ending for devoted players I can do no better than 8/10.
Incredible, addicting, creative, fun, silly game. I love the ridiculous startup corporate jargon and millennial startup art style. Highly recommended if you like some grindy fun. I wish a game like this was more appreciated and popular so it would receive more updates all this time later. But ultimately I'm just grateful I ever found out about it.
