June 2025
Dontnod’s biggest strengths have always been atmosphere, soundtrack, and the ability to make you feel nostalgic for places you’ve never been to. And they hit it out of the ballpark once again. I can definitely see why people call it the spiritual successor to lis1 (though I’m not sure they will ever reach those heights again). The game is visually absolutely stunning, and, more importantly, it truly captures the feeling of a hot summer day during school holidays, when you were just lounging around with your friends and time passed so slowly. That’s why I didn’t really mind the slow pacing, although I can definitely see how it could be a drawback for some. The story does pick up towards the end of Tape 1, but don’t expect much of a thrilling gameplay. It’s just not that kind of game. Now, the overall theme? A 90s teen mystery plot?? Sign me tf up. It’s giving first season of Stranger Things and I Know What You Did Last Summer , and I’m here for it!! I really enjoyed the supernatural elements, and I appreciate that they left the ending quite ambiguous and open to interpretation, though I’m not a huge fan of the post-credit scene and its implications. As for some of the reservations that I have, I was prepared for cringe teenagers since I’ve played (and loved) lis1 and lis2, but my god, if I had to hear Swann say “geez-o” one more time... I get that it’s their trademark, and maybe I’m no longer the target audience, but I really wish they would retire the shy, socially awkward main character trope. That being said, she did grow on me in Tape 2, and Nora, Katt and Autumn were absolutely amazing, I love them to death. They all felt so natural and unique in their personalities, they actually felt like real people. My other gripe is the sort of illusion of choice. You can choose to “pursue” any of the girls, but the game keeps subtly nudging you toward the “right” choice. I hated this in lis2 as well, where they basically went, “Yeah, you can be gay, but just know that it’s the morally wrong path, and you only get one kiss as opposed to the other option” (I’m still bitter about that). All in all, though, this is just me nitpicking. The game is lovely and absolutely made me cry!

It's been 27 years since Swann first stumbled onto the girls It's been 10 years since I first stumbled onto the Episode 1 of Life is Strange. I was very touched by Max's story back then, but this one... man, this one is special. Maybe, MAYBE! Lost Records is not the most heartbreaking thing in the world. But it certainly felt like one. What started as an intriguing mystery ended up giving me what others may only dream of providing - a most genuine view of another person's life. It wrecked me beyond repair. I am without a doubt still unpacking what this game actually made me feel. It's like uncovering an entirely new emotion. A new dimension. And don't even get me started on the technicalities... If you invest yourself into this story, the authors really know how to make your experience more meaningful. Wherever you look there are always some carefully placed details that expand your perception of the narrative. The team continue to invent more and more clever and impactful ways to interact with the game. The writing is vibrant and profound. You are surrounded by real people with layers upon layers and beautiful internal contradictions. Dialog and overall interactive systems are so refined and more complex than anywhere else, perfectly reflecting our protagonist's internal world. and Camcorder is a genius touch and the heart of all of this. Perfection.

It was fantastic. Positives: -The characters feel like real human beings, the acting, movements, everything about them feels real and unique -Mechanics: I like the hidden choices, recording everything, choosing who to talk to and what to talk about -Graphics: Surprisingly good? It's a big leap compared to their other games. -Acting: Pretty good overall -Music: Very good overall, but not as memorable as their first LIS. Still pretty good! Negatives? -Pacing: Maybe a bit too slow. I think the old 5 episode format could be better. I miss when each episode had a defined "theme" and left you wanting for more. With this game it felt like a very long stretched out episode one. It's not like I was not enjoying it, but I kept waiting for something big to happen. Note: Tape 2 is not out at the time of writing this. -The choices can be misleading. You can say something that seems "good", but the way Swann delivers the line makes the girls upset. I will be replaying it to change my choice lol (remind me to update after tape 2)

This game is what you’d get if Yellowjackets, I Saw the TV Glow, Paper Girls, It, Stranger Things and Life is Strange had a baby.

(Updated having finished Tape 1) If you liked Life is Strange (especially if you loved the first game and were disappointed by Double Exposure), this is the game you’ve been waiting for.* As I write this after finishing Tape 1, the game has over 1000 reviews, and is sitting at 93% positive. This was clearly a labor of love; it isn't perfect, but it is genuinely heartfelt. It has an intentionally slow and introspective pace, which works really well for it; if you don't like that sort of thing, you might not like this game, and that's OK. But it is a game about real, relatable people and their connections with each other--which aren't always what they seem at first--and the more supernatural, dramatic elements are, like in most Dontnod games, simply a vehicle for telling a story. I'll update this again after Tape 2 comes out, but I have every confidence it will be phenomenal. My original review: I was hoping to enjoy this, but I was blown away with how it also genuinely fires on all cylinders. The music, visuals (especially character designs and expressions), voice acting, and all those elements feel deeply immersive and beautiful, but the interactivity (moment to moment gameplay, short range choice and consequence) are all outstanding. The use of the video memoir feature is such a well-implemented tool for both narrative and gameplay, and the photo mode is much more powerful and well set up than the one from the recent LiS:DE. The narrative was engaging from the start, and it seems to be going somewhere specific, with a clear creative vision. We’ll have to wait and see if Tape 2 can stick the landing, but this segment is top notch. * It even has a cat you can play with, and you don’t have to spend an extra $30 just to see it for five minutes and have it taken away!
