The writers know how to rip your heart out, stomp on it and blow it up with a bomb. However, 10/10 would recommend to everyone.

Lydia is not so much a game but a walking simulator. It's an emotional roller coaster with themes of: substance abuse, neglect, victim-hood, and many more but I don't want to spoil. The creators call it an emotional visual novel which fits cause you are essentially locked an a linear path of characters talking, walking and more characters talking. The characters speak gibberish sound effects (Banjo Kazooie style) and I did find it a little annoying after awhile just a little. There are only 4 puzzles I counted in the game and they are very straight forward. It's all about narrative here, I've lost count at how many Indie titles I've played where I was left disappointed: Dear Ester, The path, Gone Home, Fire watch. Trust me this is one of the better stories told that wasn't pretentious and costs over 10 bucks. This one is priced just right; be warned It deals with some tough subject matter, I wouldn't recommend anyone with depression play it. If I have to critique the game, I find it's artwork to be amateurish. I know this is an Indie game with a small budget and it is passable, but most of the designs look like a highschooler with an interest in art drew them and still had a ways to go. This game gets a recommendation it's rightly priced, knows what it is, and is one of the better narrative driven games I played.

The game itself is cool; it's an easy, well-designed point-and-click game. Not recommended for anyone with depression or going through a rough time. It's true that it can be a bit unnerving at times, especially when you see what's really happening through the lens of a little girl. But in the end, I felt like something was missing, I don't know what. Give it a try when its on sale.

Unsubtle but it hurts, some heartaching moments. Perhaps it's not unsubtle but just, real, to those who've been through it more.

Lydia offers a narrative short story with interesting modern themes revolving around broken families and their impact on self-destructive behaviour and its consequences for both sides - as well as for parents and the children involved. Whilst I really appreciate the story-based game structure, as well as the musical score and style chosen for the narrative, the attention to detail in the gameplay is lacking. It's more of a visual novel that you run through quickly (approx. 60 mins). There is little to no opportunity for interaction with objects, rooms or NPCs, which for me is an immensely wasted opportunity to make the game even more intense, as no deep connection to the characters can be created (at least not if you haven't been in a similar life situation). Nevertheless, I think that despite its shortcomings, Lydia is a title that is worth checking out. So people, make up your own minds about it. :)
