This is one of the best mystery visual novels ever written. It's also the first visual novel I've fully completed in Japanese, which made it both difficult but incredibly rewarding to slowly work through. However, as soon as I finished the first chapter it grabbed me enough that I finished the rest of the game in around a month, reading as much as I could without losing focus every day. I made heavy use of a dictionary and finished with a massively inflated playtime of around 90 hours between the demo and full game, and yet never got bored. Manosaba is essentially a danganronpa game, replacing the high school students with magical girls. It borrows the main structure from danganronpa, with slightly different flavoring. 13 girls are captured and brought to a prison, and are told that they have the potential to become witches. All of these girls have a unique magical power which does something very specific and allows the writers to build mysteries around them. As the girls' stress increases, they become closer to becoming a witch, a clear metaphor for trauma, and eventually will gain an intent to kill directed at someone. When a girl is killed, a trial is held, in which the protagonist along with the remaining girls have to decide who committed the murder and became a witch, where they are then executed. It's extremely similar to danganronpa, but where it significantly differs is in the quality of its writing and characters. Simply, almost none of the girls feel like "throw away" characters to be killed in the first 1 or 2 murders, and they all have fleshed out personalities, interests, backstories, and trauma. In addition, the murders themselves have really unique, and extremely human motives that push these girls to kill someone else. All of the people in this game have faced really traumatic events, and the ways in which they cope clash with the other girls and push conflict. It ends up leading to extremely powerful moments. My personal favorite character is Tachibana Sherry, a girl who, unlike all of the other characters, is extremely happy to be in this murder mystery situation. She calls herself a "Great Detective" and wants nothing more than to solve every murder. She's absurdly funny but has hidden depths just like every other character that leads to her becoming even more endearing. In addition, the individual murder mysteries themselves are consistently extremely engaging. They use clever tricks and make both effective and fair use of each girls' magic ability. While I was able to logically work out quite a few of them, many more ended up really shocking me with their culprit. Sometimes, I even logically knew the culprit but emotionally didn't want to see them executed, creating a really interesting mixed feeling. Yet, the girls who were executed or killed always felt like they satisfyingly exited the story. The art and character designs themselves are also some of the best in the medium. The character designs are immediately striking, show the characters' personalities, and are extremely enjoyable to just look at. CG art is also stellar, every CG feels like it should be in a museum. Every murder scene and execution is beautifully horrific and the other CGs are just as high quality. On top of that, the music is amazing. It has these both haunting and beautiful vocals as well as a super catchy OP theme, which all uses a made up language that gives it a very unique style. Everyone must play this game once the translation drops later this year.

As an avid visual novel reader, I’ve read hundreds of VNs in both Japanese and English, ranging from charage, moege, and scenarioge to utsuge and even nukige. I can confidently say this is one of the best VNs I’ve experienced. For a “death game” scenario, it’s rare to find writing of this quality. Every character is portrayed beautifully, and by the end of the game, it’s hard not to grow attached to all of them. If you can read Japanese, do yourself a favor and play it. If not, I highly recommend waiting for the English translation in which I sincerely hope it does the original justice.

日本語は以下にあります。 English comes first. English I am writing this review in case someone reads it when the english version eventually comes, or if you're just like me and can read japanese and want to give it a try. The game simply is excellent. It's hard to believe it's the first game that came out of this indie studio (2025 seems to be that kind of year !). This game has everything: enthralling, well paced story with intriguing mysteries, a cast of very diverse and well written characters, very cute gothic-like anime art, and a beautiful OST that helps build atmosphere or tension. Its also fully voice acted, with very talented voice actors that really bring the girls to life ! Of course, the game relies on shock for its plot twists so I would recommend going in blind as much as you can. The game really keeps a lot of surprises all the way through, so it would be a shame to ruin that for yourself. The game switches between your usual VN scenes and Trial phase. First, the VN part is where its mostly just going along either slice of life scenes with the girls, trying to find out the secrets of this mysterious prison the girls are held in, or gathering clues after a murder happens. Then, you have the trial phase where its much more active: you have to listen to hearing sessions where the girls make their testimonies, and you can either agree/disagree (and more) with what they are saying, using evidence to back you up. What is interesting is that you need to also take into account the girls' magical powers into account, and of course the possibility that some of them may just lie or mislead you about what they're capable of. There is also a dose of yuri in this VN ! Unfortunately, there is nothing explicit in terms of romantic relationships here (as it is usually the case with these "yuri adjacent" games...) but its still very cute and the community already is not afraid of shipping some couples together haha ! Finally, if you're learning japanese and want to challenge yourself to read this VN, I found that most characters are easy to understand and use simple japanese, although some may speak in either a slang/poetic/formal way. The narration may also be difficult if you're not used to it, and the game does use a lot of specific vocabulary related to the murders/trials etc. The trial phase also involves dialogue that goes on automatically, so you cannot stop to read it properly. But you can listen to those multiple times, so hopefully it should be OK. There is also a chat log where you can listen or read previous lines as much as you want, so that is really helpful. Sometimes furigana appears on some words, but its not often and its very inconsistent (why do you add furigana above 私 but not 鬱陶しい, game ? XD), so I wouldn't rely on it too much. In any case, if you can afford it, please please give it a try ! I really do believe this game will be a reference in the VN genre in the future (it already is a hit in Japan to be honest).
