In my 30+ years of video gaming, never has a game evoked emotions of such multiplicity and magnitude in me like Many Nights a Whisper did. It’s essentially a kaleidoscope of human emotions, how did such a short and minimalistic game manage to convey so much? I’m still in awe. But what strikes me even more, is its boundary-pushing depiction of failure in video games. Since the inception of video games, “winning” has always been considered the ultimate goal in most games, what varies from game to game is merely the definition of success. Even in narrative-driven games that focus on loss and failure, to witness such directed plots may still require players to succeed gameplay-wise. In games with multiple endings, there usually is a (canon or not) hierarchy of endings, a bad ending is called bad for a reason: an inferior experience as a punishment for failing mechanically or making ill-advised decisions. A layover - that’s what failure usually is in video games: a temporary setback, something you’ll need to git gud NEXT TIME to get over. Contrary to what I just said, on its surface Many Nights a Whisper is a verbatim example of this oversimplified model of video games. It reveals its nature in the very first scene: you’re the chosen one to carry the responsibility of succeeding in an upcoming event of enormous consequence. However, here is the ineffable part, through the magically meditative and hypnotizing aura it somehow created, as I got closer to the grand finale, I found myself more than ever mentally prepared to willingly accept a possible failure. A real failure. No more save scumming, no more backing up save files, no more restarting a new game, no more those daily gamer shenanigans (hence the capitalization of next time above). This is it. As I believe this is the intended way to get the optimal experience out of this game. I was willing to forego my gamer’s obsession to cooperate with these wholesome developers, together creating a beautiful experience I’ll savour probably forever. My mindset then was like: “If I fail, that’s simply how this universe works. This failure will be internalized as part of myself and I’ll live the rest of my life with that regret and remorse. And I’m okay with it, ain’t this the allure of destiny?” And then I succeeded in the end.

This game was about me training for a long time, having to put up with everyone's BS they wanted to tell me while dealing with the expectations they had for me and the belief they had in me, finally believing in myself and psyching myself up for the big moment and completely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ it up in the end. 10/10 most realistic game ever

This game is my runner-up choice for 2025 GOTY, as stacked a year as ever there was. Look, it costs three dollars and only takes an hour to play. The price of admission is very approachable. The questions it asks and the lack of giving you "correct" answers makes this a reflective game that hits among the best of them at a fraction of the runtime. You have to decide if the wishes "deserve" to be granted, with the understanding that all of that doesn't matter if you don't make the shot. You see, it's a game about aiming and making one shot. Should you be worried about that? I think not for two reasons: Firstly, this is not some epic fallout style RPG where it tells you how your choices changed this world, how making the shot made the world a better place. The game ends basically as soon as you take the shot in the ritual, regardless of outcome or aim. It leaves you with some words to reflect on, but missing the shot leaves as much to reflect on as making it. Secondly, I found this game more compelling as someone with bad aim in shooters. I've been playing them for years and folks: I just can't aim to save my life. I've always been bad at it with a controller or a mouse. This heightened the pressure for me. I knew that if I just tried to take the shot without much thought, I would miss without a doubt. So I practiced. I practiced a lot. I lined up my shot using level geometry extremely precisely until I could make the shot on one try walking to my position. I remembered that the ceremony is at night and it would be dark. so: I practiced even more. Lining up the shot with no level geometry. Just me and the chalice off in the distance, until I could make the shot almost blindfolded (I would not be able to do this). I made the shot that night and I felt accomplished, but my immediate thought was what if I had missed. What if missing had more relief to it, because then I'm not responsible for changing the world in the ways so wished by people who approached the wall. I sat there a long time then turned the game off and went to bed. I laid awake thinking about the choices I had made for the next five hours. My practice had me playing more of this game than most people do and I am very pleased to say that it is the kind of game that sticks with you when you're done playing it. It's remarkable. I need everyone I know to play it.

despite being a very short game, it's very moving. it's amazing how you can sympathize so deeply with a character's entire life by spending an hour playing this game. also i accidentally made dogs soul-less and immortal, unleashing killing machines that cannot be stopped all over the world. be careful what you wish for.
