Sept. 2025
Now it's finally complete and I've fully played it I think now's a good time to do a review, M.A.S.S is a game that for all the time in the making might seem like not all that much but it has some outstanding customisation in terms of mecha building, there are enough missions and some are decently fun enough but with a let down of a final boss not in terms of design but in how intentionally underpowered the devs make you for some reason (unless it was a glitch because Q did not work) that said there's a myriad of ways to build you M.A.S.S unit and a fair amount of weapon types and looks of which if I delved in deeper (and I will) I could have made some crazy weapons and mecha designs with what they give you, in short it's fun enough and great if you like making varied mecha designs dood. Okay full review time, M.A.S.S focuses on an event where creatures known as Quarks came into being, threatening humanity as a whole, you with funding from a certain someone take on requests to eliminate these creatures for humanity dood. The game plays rather interestingly if not kind of a lot to remember, especially with the speed of things, you have Melee weapons of which you can equip many, possibly due to the variety and element system, (I'll get to that in a bit) You change between these by holding L2 down and pushing in the left stick, not the most intuitive but it works, then you have physical type bullet guns, L2 left on the D-pad to change, energy based guns, L2 and right on D-pad, Missiles of varying types, L2 and up on D-pad and finally what I'll call energy drone that float and have a rather interesting variety of attacks, L2 and down on the D-pad, as you can tell there's a looot to keep up with along with a special thing you get later that requires holding L2 R1 and a direction on the right stick to use, it's all fun stuff but in the heat of combat? It's a nightmare to use on the fly, especially switching from gun to melee dood. I will also mention melee weapons range from single handed, dual wield and 2 handed type weapons, two handed/dual are typically stronger but unlike the one handed it can't use the shield, I will say the shield has it's own issues though, unless you equip certain things it feels as though it doesn't really do enough to make it useful and the things that do make it useful don't make it too useful and in fact heavily penalise you for not blocking in the case of the actual most useful one, at base it should really half damage but taking the time to test it out I went from taking 700ish damage to taking...700ish damage? Yeah confusing right? Almost seems just for show unless you equip certain things dood. Talking about equipping "certain things" you have a whole upgrade chart for three OS system types, these systems have a huge variety of effects and modules you can equip allowing for multiple effects, including boosting elemental type attacks, something I neglected to mention until now, each weapon can be fire, ice or lightning damage, each weapon also has non elemental types, physical for melee, pierce for physical bullets and plasma for energy types, enemies all have a weakness to at least one element and I believe the normal damage types are there just for the peeps who wanna be lazy about it and just smash dood. The mech making in this is pretty insane and could only have been better if they decided to add tank treads or a hover base option, otherwise you have a heck of a lot to play with, each part has a bunch of sections of which you can colour using a bunch of set palettes or custom ones you can make, you can also put letters/symbols onto the machine from a list of them and unique separate parts of which you can move around and get really unique with, parts much like weapons need blueprints and money to make though and you get those from playing the game and beating quarks dood. Talking of crafting and parts, I will say that for as much as there is in the game, the amount of money you earn isn't all that great, you have better ways to earn money with certain modules you can equip or mission types but the modules will leave you weaker than you'd like on missions meaning they take more time which means less money in a long run scenario and the other quest types albeit fun take a long while, I'm unsure if co-op has better payouts I admit not playing those modes due to personal reasons but I can't imagine them having much more payout dood. There are three quest types, Story which is self explanatory, hunt which is just a killing spree of enemy units and challenge, these range from three unique game types with different conditions, last long enough and you get some outstanding pay (round 19 is my limit) as well as a loooot of blueprint parts, at least for the first two, the last one is a boss rush, fun enough dood. The maps are pretty decent and become large too, I will say the game does suffer from some combat issues though, melee enemies no matter how fast I seem to get basically just cling to you making thruster speed feel kinda of meh outside of reaching a shooter class enemies just a little faster and getting through larger levels a little faster too, this is also an issue based on how shield recharge can only happen if you aren't getting hit, something that is nearly an impossibility with some enemy types, personally my suggestion would be to have shields always regenerate just at a somewhat slower pace, otherwise some enemies/bosses are a nightmare to fight against, on top of that attacking things isn't very accurate for melee even if you lock onto them, it's not the worst but when the enemies have wide range or are super accurate themselves with every hit with insane tracking, it would be nice to know I can actually hit them when it counts dood. The photo mode is fun and something I highly appreciate in a game where you can make many mecha, I do feel in the future if they do more with this that a few more weapon types and parts for weapons in particular would be nice, especially when it comes to showing off your mecha, weapons can be just as important as the mech itself in terms of looks after all but as it stands there's plenty there overall to have some fun flashy pictures with dood. Oh as a little side note I will say that missiles need a major damage boost, even if the cost is them having very limited ammo, as it stands even my normal guns do more damage faster which isn't exactly giving me or anyone a reason to bother targeting the enemy to have them track, more effort than it's worth at that point dood. And that's it really, it's a game that ranges from a decent time to a super fun time based on what you like most in games like these, it has it's flaws as I've mentioned but it sounds like they are doing more with the game still even after full release so who knows, maybe they'll iron out some of the issues eventually? Thanks for reading and if ya buy it I hope you have a blast dood!

its a mech customisation game first and everything else second. If you really like designing mechs, and its on sale, get it. if you want any semblance of interesting characters or worldbuilding this aint it chief. That being said, the combat isnt that great but its enough to be turn your brain off enjoyable. Would love a full customisation mode with all parts unlocked from the beginning

Sometimes, it's best to read what's on the tin. M.A.S.S. Builder. A game about building battlemechs and taking them for a test in increasingly difficult missions. Most of the game actually revolves around building your own custom mech, whether it's from stock parts (but in METICULOUS detail) or even by making your own parts from basic shapes. Even for someone who can only make a collage out of stock parts, I found the building part to be rather fun. Though it would be nice if the more complex aspect wasn't obtuse and rather unintuitive but that's nothing Earth-shattering. I managed to figure out custom paints at least. Onto the gameplay part, the part where you're taking your mech for a (bumpy) test ride. I am playing with mouse/keyboard and am pretty satisfied with the controls. Didn't even need to rebind anything, and that's usually the FIRST thing I do in most games of this kind, 2D and 3D alike. But the gameplay is best described as a gem in the rough. On one hand, the game offers high-speed, Gundam-like action and even allows for dash-cancelling your attacks, but on the other hand, mechs still feel like mechs when it comes to combat, melee more than anything. And you'll be doing that a LOT, since ranged weapons don't pack half the power melee does. It feels as if the game has a bit of an identity crisis. The enemy numbers are pretty high (not exactly like Dynasty Warriors but still rather high) but already in chapter 3, the bigger ones start packing quite a wallop. Stop for 3 seconds, you get dogpiled on and your M.A.S.S. is blown to bits. And that's with Frames and Engines labeled as "built for sustained combat". Boss fights are... sometimes infuriating. The Quark types are colossal and VERY mobile for their size. Respawning enemies are mostly fodder you eliminate for ranged weapon ammo... but your ranged weapons are as effective against bosses as is throwing grapes at a charging rhinoceros. So most of the time, you're chasing the bosses around hoping not to get dogpiled on. You can avoid that in some fights by hitting the boss while flying, but Mission 19, for example, has enemies which actively aim at you and can take you down. The situation is similar when you're fighting enemy M.A.S.S. units. Bosses are even more mobile and elusive, often pack heavy ranged firepower, are accompanied by endlessly respawning grunts... and can always escape you with thrusters. And all boss types have VERY high HP, so the fights are awfully long with how you're constantly forced to chase down the bosses while constantly under attack from grunts. And some of them pack a serious punch, as if the bosses were not dangerous enough. Finally, there's a pretty serious flaw with the development sub-menu between missions. It can't be navigated, so higher level options simply can't be clicked on. This REALLY needs to be fixed ASAP. Conclusion: The game has a lot of potential both for "build-a-mech" players and those who just want the action part. But the boss fights really need some rebalancing and the player-used ranged weapons some buffing. It takes at least one entire magazine for taking down a GRUNT, so ranged firepower doesn't even tickle boss types. Maybe at least a reduction in the amount of grunts spawned during a boss fight. All in all, it's still a game I do recommend but also want to point out a few things I believe need improvement.

This game is still in early access and is still being constantly worked on and updated over the past 6 years. So it's not a perfect game, but the game devs haven't given up on this game and that speaks volumes. They are adding to the game with each update and constantly keep their players updated with regular updates. Is it perfect no? Do they keep working on it, to make it better with each update, HELL YES! I love the fact that this is still an active project and begin worked on. The best way to describe this game is an arcade version of Armored Core that focuses a lot in customization and fun and isn't overpriced. It is a real hidden gem on steam and recommend it to every mech fan. Just load the demo and give it a shot for yourself.

If you're buying, know this from someone who enjoys the game; This mech game is more like building Gundam kits than anything. M.A.S.S. Builder prioritizes customization over game-play, which isn't bad, just niche! A big flaw: Combat is shallow and feels repetitive when unlocking new parts, but because you get a lot of new parts to buy per mission, you have to be committed to the excitement of designing things to keep it from being a mood killer. If you're looking for a "game", I'd suggest; Armored Core 6 / TitanFall 2 / Into The Breach / Mechabellum (maybe) If you're looking for a (bipedal only, so far) mech designing program/game, this is it. If you find it satisfying to draw up custom designs on paper and pencil and see if you can put that in a game, this is more for you, as it is for me!
