Max Payne. What a funny name. Like something a kid would come up with. 'Maximum Pain', right? As in, he's in constant heavy pain, and addicted to painkillers. Ha ha. Anyway... There I was, sitting on front of the computer playing the same damn game I played over a decade ago as a kid. Was it determinism? Was it some sort of sick way of covering up my own failures by experiencing the failures of a fictional man who's lost everything? Either way, I had played way too many video games to be entertained solely by a man jumping in slow motion, by now. It wasn't the fault of the game, I was just jaded. Yet, still, the story the man in the screen was telling, was just as entertaining as it had always been. I didn't even need to pour one today, the man drank enough for both of us. And believe me, that's saying something. Yes, I wrote all this. For a silly Steam review. Because this game is *that* good and significant. Even though Max's monologues all read like a "Cognitive Distortions Examples Cheat Sheet" for a Psychology student's final exam. "When you've lived the kind of life I have, reality comes at you through a different lens." Anyway. This is an actual piece of Art. Well, at least, as artsy as an endless slowmo third person shooter shooting spree could possibly ever get. Timeless. The fact that the game forces you to do slow mo all the time since you die within miliseconds if you even peek a bit out of cover is a bit too much and causes the slow-mo gameplay to get old real quick because you rely on it too much (at least, on harder difficulties), but still, it's solid gameplay. "The way I see it, there's two types of people: those who spend their lives trying to build a future, and those who spend their lives trying to rebuild the past" Starring the universally relatable, alcoholic, painkiller addicted, has-been cop who can't let his dead wife and kid go. No matter what, "a man with nothing to lose" will never stop being relatable. So, for the love of whatever you believe in, please stop making those stupid dad simulators, "current year" video game developers. We have had enough of them already. And besides, video game stories should be about overcoming adversity, not glorified babysitting. "If someone had told me six months ago this was where my life was headed, I'd have ordered a double of what they were drinking, drunk it, then blown my head off."
Max Payne 3 is one of the most underrated Rockstar games ever made. I feel like it gets overlooked way too much just because it’s different from the first two games, when honestly, Rockstar absolutely nailed what makes Max Payne fun. The story is great, and Max’s journey feels like a proper final chapter for his character. It takes him somewhere completely different while still keeping that same miserable, cynical Max we know. The story is serious, personal, and actually keeps you wanting to see what happens next. And obviously, the combat is incredible. Just like the other Max Payne games, the slow-motion mechanics make every fight feel ridiculously satisfying. The movement, animations, and overall feel of the combat are still fantastic, and Rockstar clearly put a ton of effort into making every encounter feel cinematic. My biggest complaint is probably the weird glitchy visual effects that happen throughout the game. I understand what Rockstar was going for with the distorted screen and glitch effects, but sometimes it feels like they thought, “Yeah, this looks awesome,” and just kept doing it. It can get distracting pretty quickly. Other than that, Max Payne 3 is a fantastic game. It’s also not ridiculously long, which I think works in its favor. The campaign is around 8–12 hours, so it ends before the gameplay has a chance to become completely repetitive. Overall, Max Payne 3 is a seriously underrated Rockstar game and a great ending to Max’s story. It has an excellent story, fantastic combat, memorable presentation, and just the right length. It may not feel exactly like the first two games, but as its own thing, it’s an amazing final chapter for Max Payne.
