I felt the German way of thinking and of game development from the first moment, so I switched the language to my native tongue and got to work. The game is mostly progressing well and has a focused story with a strong, if slightly simplified, message and only feels like work when you don't know where to go next and the lack of double-click for faster screen transition makes you hate German stubbornness for artistic expression. The game has a therapeutic message it wants to convey through its story. While I have neither the intellect nor wisdom to argue with its positive nature, I also felt a bit preached to and mislead. I can somewhat relate to some of the past experiences of the main character, Colin, but the game's way of resolving or mitigating the issues feels quite frankly a bit too easy. While it is true that we are often the source of our own insecurities, resorting to "it was all a misunderstanding" for major plot points feels insincere for me. But again, I am just one person and not a qualified psychotherapist or anything like that, so my perspective may also be severely biases by my own insecurities. In the end, I think the positive message is worth it on its own to play this game. Even I got motivated to clean up a little bit more than usual today as a result of the ending, so there's that. For some people who have real issues, maybe this game can be the trigger for them to make actual changes to their own lives or get real help. And that would definitely be a great thing.
Mindlock: The Apartment is a surreal psychological adventure set entirely in a single apartment belonging to Colin, a young man who is very much stuck in a rut! The game follows him as he tries to free himself from a familiar new prison. It is a lot of fun to play and will take around 4-6 hours to complete. It has a lot to offer with its faltering and indecisive protagonist, surreal and psychological narrative, and varied puzzle-filled gameplay. It boasts a sinister atmosphere, strange goings on, and some genuinely creepy moments to keep players on their toes. The sketchy, hand-drawn artwork is brilliantly executed and perfectly complements the gameplay, storyline, and protagonist, whilst the enigmatic music bolsters the strange, threatening vibe and further immerses the player in the experience. I thoroughly enjoyed this game and absolutely recommend it to anyone who enjoys point-and-click titles. It stays true to the genre whilst providing some unique and original elements that help it stand out in a positive way. WANT TO KNOW MORE?
