nice one! i was a bit annoyed that i needed to buy storage for the meta-progression, but then devs fixed that, and it's nice that they get it and fix stuff like that i liked the main loop, so had fun playing it many times and ultimately completed the game super chill, vibes are good, catching bugs is super meditative (actual playtime is closer to 10+ hours, but i played offline)

Me: Hey this looks like one of those fun little idle games where I can click things and restart every once in a while and run in the background to make progress. Also me: *Obsessively stares at the screen for 12 hours finishing both endings* But seriously, is it going to provide you with 100 hours of gameplay? No, but it's a super fun, memorable incremental with great 90s flavour that I thoroughly enjoyed. Also the devs seem to be actively updating it so maybe there's more to come. Well worth the few dollars!

Honestly the "mixed" overall review score sits right with this one, it's as close to "meh" as it gets. Reviews tend to end with a score but I'd give this a 5/10 "perfectly average". That's not necessarily a bad thing, there's enjoyment to be had here if you like incremental games, it's just that there are better options out there. You might like this game for the nostalgic aesthetics, the design is very consistent over the whole game and it's really quite nice overall. It's clearly drawing heavy inspiration from Windows 98, you even have a rendition of Clippy, except he's a garden gnome here. Thankfully you can turn him off because it won't take long for him to just be in the way. The various chat messages from your games are nice and believable, you would expect to see messages like that in an MMO chat, they inform you about what's happening with the game too, you don't ever need them to know what's up, it's just extra flare, but they do get repetitive soon and you won't see a reason to read any of it eventually. There's a decent amount of game here for the price, for a completionist. If you're here for a casual playthrough, you'll probably be able to reach an ending in ~5-8 hours, depending on your playstyle, factoring in having to learn the mechanics of the game. Now for the meh part, you'll end up really not having much to do eventually, once you automate the process of debugging and server reprovision, the only busy time you'll have is right after releasing a sequel for a couple of minutes and then you'll be just sitting around, waiting for numbers to tick up, before dropping a sequel again and doing it over and over till you get to an end. I don't know what could have been done better to fill the "dead air" but the minesweeper minigame (which is just a carbon copy of the minesweeper on windows) isn't exactly it. You'd maybe expect a bit more in-dept game development mechanic but there isn't much to speak of either. You press the "development" button a couple of times, name the game and that's it, no strategic decisions, no figuring out what works and what does not, no playing around with an engine, it's just very simple and barebones. Then there's the ping mechanic which ensures that eventually, no matter what you do, ping will get out of control and you have to release a sequel. Which I personally think is fine, it's the game pushing you forward because this isn't a game about maintaining a single game, and the most optimal strategy here is to push sequels almost as fast as possible, especially once you can get to the highest quality without any issues, it just feels a bit too hand-holdy maybe, takes away your own agency over your "prestige's" which is essentially what releasing a sequel is in this game. Couple it with there being a cap on how much prestige currency you can get per release and the game ends up feeling a lot more "on rails" than you might want. Still overall a decent experience, nothing really stands out here and there are better games to get in the idle/incremental field for similar prices, but I played more barebones stuff so I know you could do worse as well. If the aesthetic speaks to you and or you're a completionist that's desperately looking for a weekend game to get through, feel free to grab it. It took me 13 hours to 100% but you can definitely do it faster too if you release sequels more often than I did.

Solid concept, decent execution. took me like 6 hours to get through every achievement except the minesweeper ones. The gameplay loop seriously incentivizes rapid iteration on games. Release it, hit ~40TiB of data, announce the next one. Whether or not this is some deep meta commentary or if it's just a bad balancing thing, I have no idea. The game suffers a little from having no major end state (apparently one exists but i somehow never triggered it) and eventually the games you release are all the same and they're just a means of farming data which is when it gets pretty stale. Could use with a night mode (my poor eyes). 7/10 not bad. fun ideas.

MMO 98 is a nice game in the 'number go up' genre of incremental games. You're tasked with operating an MMO gaming company, mainly keeping servers operational and players happy. Everything is set in a Windows 98 style environment, with plenty of little amusing references. It has enough mechanics to be interesting without being overly challenging. Good to while away some time if you don't want to exert your mind too much.
