It's just what I expected, a skin or different version of Backpack Battles, it lacks some game modes not to mention that the adventure mode is very short. Recommended to grab it on sale.

Great game, a slow start but as you unlock characters and the two hidden factions. The replayability is excellent with a wide variety of characters of units and you have to think on your feet when it comes to adjusting your strategy to available units,

Monster Battles from Fourteen, published by Gamersky Games, is one of those deceptively simple strategy titles that quietly reveals surprising depth the longer you spend with it. At a glance, it looks like a colorful, lightweight auto-battler, but beneath that approachable surface is a layered system that blends roguelike progression, unit synergy, and spatial inventory management into a tightly interwoven loop. Instead of relying on fast reflexes or direct control, the game asks you to think ahead, plan carefully, and accept that sometimes the outcome hinges as much on adaptability as it does on strategy. The defining mechanic is its inventory-based unit placement, which adds a puzzle-like dimension rarely seen in the genre. Monsters aren’t just recruited—they must be physically arranged within a limited grid, and how you position them directly impacts their effectiveness in battle. Some units benefit from adjacency, others require specific alignments to activate bonuses, and certain combinations unlock powerful synergies tied to race or class. This creates a constant push-and-pull between optimizing your layout and making room for new additions, turning what could have been a straightforward drafting system into something far more thoughtful. It’s not just about building a strong team—it’s about organizing it intelligently within constraints. The progression loop leans heavily into roguelike structure, with each run offering randomized shop options and opportunities to upgrade or evolve your roster. Combining duplicate monsters to create stronger versions introduces moments of satisfying escalation, especially when a carefully planned build finally comes together. However, the reliance on randomness is a double-edged sword. When the shop aligns with your intended strategy, the game feels rewarding and cleverly designed; when it doesn’t, it can feel like you’re improvising under less-than-ideal conditions. This unpredictability is part of the experience, but it also means that not every run feels equally fair or engaging. Combat itself is entirely automated, placing the emphasis squarely on preparation. Once a battle begins, the outcome is determined by the choices you’ve already made—unit composition, placement, and synergy. Watching your strategy unfold can be satisfying, especially when everything clicks into place, but it can also feel passive for players who prefer more direct involvement. The game tries to offset this by introducing asynchronous encounters against other players’ builds, which adds variety and a subtle competitive edge, even though the core experience remains largely single-player in structure. Visually, Monster Battles embraces a bright, stylized look with a roster of monsters that are more charming than intimidating. The art direction doesn’t aim for realism but instead focuses on clarity and personality, which works well given the game’s strategic focus. That said, the presentation isn’t without flaws. The interface, while functional, can feel a bit rough, and certain mechanics aren’t always explained as clearly as they could be. This can make the early hours slightly overwhelming, especially for players unfamiliar with similar systems, as much of the deeper strategy is learned through trial and error rather than guided onboarding. Balance is another area where the game shows some inconsistency. Certain builds or combinations can feel disproportionately powerful compared to others, which can limit experimentation once optimal strategies are discovered. At the same time, part of the fun lies in discovering those powerful setups, so the imbalance doesn’t completely undermine the experience—it just narrows the range of viable approaches over time. Combined with occasional technical quirks and uneven translation, these issues give the impression of a game with strong ideas that hasn’t been fully refined. Despite its shortcomings, Monster Battles remains an engaging and often addictive experience for players who enjoy strategic planning and system-driven gameplay. Its unique blend of inventory management and auto-battler mechanics gives it a distinct identity, and the constant tension between planning and randomness keeps runs feeling dynamic. It may not have the polish or balance of more established titles in the genre, but it compensates with creativity and a willingness to experiment with its core design. Rating: 7/10

Haven't written a review for years. I have been playing a lot of backpack and auto-battler games, and I gotta say, this might be IT! This might be my main game of the 2 genres.

Almost didn't buy the game based on reviews, but seeing as its my current favourite genre, i took a punt! Absolutely no idea why there are negative reviews as this is a splendidly crafted game with so much room for varied builds. Jumped straight to my favourite inventory management game! Well done devs, keep up the good work!
