The game was a little rough at launch, which informed a lot of the earlier reviews. Since then, the developer has rolled out several patches to rebalance the steep difficulty curve and reduce the repetitive grind for meta currency. Additionally, they have reduced the extreme RNG by adding the option to disable certain buildings on a per run basis, making it much easier to achieve a viable build. In its current state, the game is great.

Got my moneys worth but I feel left wanting a bit more. The game feels like early access Vampire Survivors in Mortal Engines. It is fun for sure but I hope there is more content added; more maps, more towns, more heroes and longer runs would probably make it feel better. Some of the challenges are overkill and feel near unachievable. The game is very grindy for not a lot of payoff, you can earn everything pretty quickly.

I'm fully editing my review after now playing this game enough to complete all of the achievements (save for one, which just involves grinding more currency) and ingame 'missions' for tower unlocks. The reviews on this game are going to be skewed for one critical reason, and if you're a gamer like me this reason is going to be the reason why you'll love this game: It's challenging. You're going to read a lot of reviews from people that want their hand held. They're going to talk about how there's no player agency, how decisions don't matter, how "progression is just percent-based points going up" or how the harder difficulties seem impossible. The reality for rougelike enjoyers is that virtually every single one of these bullet points is the opposite of truth. There are MASSIVE amounts of player agency in any given run. There are several forms of meta progression beyond just the %-based upgrades to stats. The harder difficulties are challenging, but far from impossible. If you played Ball x Pit enough and were like me, you may have thought the first couple of hours were fun - but then you got bored. Like, painfully bored. The visuals were fun, the sounds and lights were cool, it seemed flashy and alive but the truth was... the game itself was just bland. Every run was easily managed by simply combining the best-in-slot balls, there was never really a challenge to be had and you could quite literally have the AI-controlled players pilot the game for you and win with high % rate. You didn't even have to play the game yourself to play it. Sound familiar? It was boring, right? Well, this game is the opposite of that. This game doesn't just hand you the keys to the BiS car every run. It expects you to modify your approach, even more so when you're trying to tackle challenges for additional permanent tower unlocks. Sure, you know which tower loadout is your favorite, but how about completing the map with only four different tile types placed? What about beating the map with only ONE tower placed, period? Maybe it's having 500+ gold on Expert, or 100+ stored Stone at the end of a Nightmare level. These challenges ask hyper-specific things of you and create goal-oriented runs where you have to play differently each time to succeed. The meta progression unlocks are hidden behind a lot of these challenges, as they unlock further towers to use in future runs - and some of them are very, very powerful. Your pool of options will grow the more accomplished you become, which leads to even more unique runs and strategies and outcomes. The design of this game is a gift, a diamond in the rough that could really shine with more polish tailored specifically to what these developers are trying to accomplish. My fear is these donks complaining that the game simply doesn't cater to their basic demands every run will steer it away from the original model it currently is, in to a more generic and bland shell of a game like others currently in the market. Reader, let me emphasize: if your rougelike desires are creative runs, user agency and legitimate challenge(s) beyond just number-go-up HP/DMG increases to enemies (which the game still has, make no mistake, I'm not saying it doesn't, it just isn't limited to that exclusively) then you will enjoy this game. Do not let the mired cries of casuals dissuade you from giving it a try. o7

I think it's easy to over-critique a game when reviewing sometimes, when really a game's "target band" is much lower than that of an AA game. I managed to put 6 hours into the demo alone, playing again and again despite unlocking all of the demo content because it was fun. Sometimes, games are cast under a huge magnifying glass but nobody really asks if they're having fun, because that's the point of the game, right? This cost me £6 ($8) in a bundle and in total with the demo i've put in around 8 hours so far. For me, i've made my money back already in content and i've still so, so much to unlock. It's true, the game can feel repetitive in a way and you are locked behind harder levels because you need to scale your unlocks to be able to even cope with the difficulty. If the game was too easy though, and people would complete it in 10 hours, people would be critiquing it for that - so where is the middle ground? For me, I enjoy the city/tower building aspect more than the gameplay itself, but still find it easy enough to chill out and WASD my way through enemies and obstacles while I chat to friends in Discord. I enjoy unlocking cool new towers for different strategies and even at this point i've a lot to unlock and a lot to try out. For the money, this game absolutely is worth picking up. It's fun, it lets you sink your time into it, but you can still jump in, play a 20 min run, and jump out. Some people have been leaving negative reviews with some criticism I can understand, but in my opinion they're holding it to account like it's a £20 ($25) game. This is a cheap, fun, little roguelike game and you have to take it for what it is. For me, that's my genre, that's my jam, and I think it's been great for the pricepoint.
