In my opinion, this is one of those cases where the VN has immaculate potential but the writing direction made some horrible choices, which negatively impacted my enjoyment as a whole. My overall expectations were honestly exceeded and I enjoyed this game quite much, especially towards the last chapters! It's a truly well executed, complex and emotional sci-fi story with many thoughts going into the lore and general plot. Without doubt it's an iconic title in the sci-fi/apocalypse/mecha/monster genres, and is especially charming due to its highly elaborate and beautiful presentation, in particular the lively battle scenes. The first half did feel dragged out but that's just how this series is lol. The last chapters are amazing though and I loved how dark and devastating the plot gets! The portrayal of despair and trauma is really well done, with the atmosphere being highly immersive. Also the soundtrack is wonderful! However there are some really frustrating choices in the writing to me... lazy to get into much detail but my main gripes are: 1) This VN is insanely biased towards the main cast, which makes sense to some extent, but getting rid of ALL new characters shortly after they even appeared while NONE of the original ones even got harmed felt lame. Then within the main cast the entire focus was entirely shifted to 1-2 characters. Although everyone had their moments and notably developed throughout the story, the general presence of the "non-important" main characters felt somewhat bland, as if they're mainly there to fill space and playtime. 2) It may sound stupid, but this game is trying too hard to be a stereotypical anime; excessive personalities aside, there was no need for that ridiculous harem trope, such elements made it feel like the game doesn't take itself seriously despite how it presents itself and just forces romance instead. I had the impression that the writers were scared of distancing Alternative too far away from Extra's vibes. 3) The ending is atrocious.. while I definitely see the vision behind it, the execution is lazy and (unless I misunderstood something) potentially opened some plotholes. The "original" world isn't even the original one as they changed some significant parts about it. Most importantly, absolutely EVERYTHING that happened in this game becomes fully meaningless, not only does it dispose of the accumulated weight, but in a sense it even goes against what the story tried to convey all along. Also there was genuinely no reason to add "character routes", this story IS linear - you're forced to skip for a long time only to get a small amount of new dialogue. The lack of diversity in routes was already boring in Unlimited but this is somehow much worse. Overall great VN but I despise some parts about it lmao

I've never ever in my life get traumatized by a video game to the point that made me think of dropping it. but after I finished it I realized that I experienced one of the best lessons in my life through out the pain and the crying and the suffering. Everything from Muv-Luv Extra, Muv-Luv Unlimited, Muv-Luv Alternative built and written very beautifully and brilliant. Every Character has it's story and hardships, and personality that develops during the story, with one of the best written protagonists. Every time I see an event or I talk with a character I learn something new, and I love and adore the cast so much and every interaction they have. I just wished this game had more high quality animations and cgs, but other than that the voice acting and the soundtracks are amazing. This game is truly a MASTERPIECE that toke a special place in my heart, I will not forget it, and I will keep carry everything I learned from it forward.
