In short, if you're an otome fan who's also familiar with ancient Chinese history or the classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and you don't mind depictions of gruesome scenes blood, flesh, bones, etc... , then this game is definitely worth playing. Otherwise, I'd recommend skipping it after all, there's no point in buying a game if you know you won't end up playing it. Right? :) My Vow to My Liege is set against the historical conflict between the kingdoms of Wu and Yue, so it's no surprise that many of its characters are inspired by real historical figures, with a touch of fantasy woven into their stories. Just a heads-up: the common route is quite long, spanning up to 10 chapters, and the romance is very minimal even after you finally get into a specific route. It's definitely a plot-heavy game rather than a fluffy romance The English translation can be a little confusing at times, but if you're already familiar with Chinese fantasy stories set in ancient kingdoms and wartime settings like I am, it shouldn't be too difficult to follow ;) This was my route order: ChenFeng → YiGuang → WuZixu → GouJian. I genuinely enjoyed every love interest because each of them has a unique personality and plays a different role in our MC's journey. 10/10 for me, and I sincerely hope the developers create another otome game with this kind of historical setting in the future. Thank you for making this game! (≧▽≦)
TL;DR: If you are a fan of historical fantasy, action, and adventure, you will like this. However, if you are looking for a heavy romance-focused visual novel, this might not be for you. The female lead is a strong-willed protagonist who puts her duty and the weight of her kingdom far ahead of any romance—though she can still be a bit naive at times as she navigates it all. Disclaimer: I played this game in Chinese, so I can't comment on the quality of the English translation, which definitely impacts the overall experience. Pros: [*]Fully Voiced: Highly immersive and adds a lot to the depth of the characters. [*]Refreshing Story: The plot is genuinely interesting and unpredictable. It brilliantly blends a historical setting (春秋戰國時期 aka The Spring and Autumn period) with Chinese mythology (i.e. Ancient beasts). [*]Interesting Character Interpretations: The characters based on real history feel incredibly grounded. Experience Goujian’s ruthless ambition and Wu Zixu’s tragic, blind loyalty brought history to life. [*]Atmospheric Writing: The dialogue and text have a distinct, semi-classical prose style that fits the historical setting perfectly. [*]Excellent Slow-Burn Romance: The romance never feels abrupt. Instead, the seeds are planted naturally through daily interactions and conversations. True to the historical warring era, every character lives through their duties and roles first before romance even enters the picture. Things to Note: [*]Slow Burn World-Building: It’s a bit confusing at first due to the heavy world-building. [*]Pacing: The common route is massive (10 chapters). Once you finally lock into a specific character route, they feel noticeably shorter than the common route itself. Overall, the different routes complement each other beautifully. Each one reveals unique details and secrets that others don't, giving you a much fuller, richer picture of the entire overarching plot by the end. The choices you make feel genuinely strategic, blending elements of politics and war perfectly given the historical setting. The endings feel logical and earned rather than rushed. If you love historical fantasy, this is definitely worth your time! For this price, it is excellent value.
A wonderful storyline that you can tell the creators took the time to flesh out. Branching pathways with interconnect motivations between the characters makes each romantic interest worth pursuing. Be prepared to be bias-wrecked as how the characters are portrayed in one route does not necessarily reflect their true nature when playing THEIR route. A game that's worthy of replay this sits at the top of my charts for romance visual novels. Those wishing to create games of their own would do well to play this game to learn from the storytelling aspects alone.
I definitely recommend this game but before I get into a deep dive of my review, I will give y'all a TL;DR - historical otome so some aspects can be confusing, but the game provides a glossary so you can familiarize yourself - fully voiced!! - amazing CG - there are some typos - MC is not bland at all, I love them so much and I barely like any otome MCs - romance doesn't start until maybe AFTER chapter 10 so beware PLEASE NOTE: If you are looking for quick thrills, this isn't the game for you. Common route doesn't have as much romantic moments and is more about folklore and historical events. This game is more like a classic PSVita visual novel than your usual Steam dating sim. For me, it isn't boring but maybe for others it can be. MY IN DEPTH REVIEW (as of where I am in the game) Personally I love the game mostly because I'm into Wuxia stories and irl history. It's a unique take. It doesn't start with romance and I think it's a good thing, at least for me, since the otome games that I've played go straight to the point and no world building whatsoever. At first I could barely hook myself into the game because I didn't understand anything despite knowing Wuxia or a little bit of Chinese history. I usually don't like wordy otomes and I was so confused HOWEVER when I actually got into flow state and read everything (not just glossing around the words), I couldn't stop playing. As of right now, I've been playing this game from 11 PM to 8 AM. The game spends a lot of time building the characters up and letting you familiarize with them, so there is more historical aspects than romance in the common route. For me, this is OK. I've played similar games and for me it doesn't ruin the experience. AS I SAID, FOR ME. The characters are vv lovable too. My favorite has to be Shi Yiguang and Chenfeng in terms of the love interests because for me, Chenfeng reminds me genuinely of a sulky puppy and Shi Yiguang reminds me of Xie Lian. At the end of the day, it's your decision but I genuinely do recommend the game if you love wuxia. I'll put more once I finished the game but please give it a try!!
