June 2025
I got this game for two bucks and for two bucks its worth about maybe 5 hours. Tried a couple different strategies but overall the pacing feels off. Maybe I'm missing something but for a deckbuilder a lot of the cards just aren't worth using. It feels optimal to have like 10 cards in your deck so your draw is consistent--it allowed me to clear the whole map without much trouble; which is a big problem for me. I never felt the need to change my strategy or composition, so now I have hundreds of skeleton cards that I will never use. The other between-battle upgrades are slow to upgrade and don't do much, leading to a map that feels empty. Each battle feels basically the same. There are some cool locations that give you powerful cards and shake up the combat slightly, but even then I never shifted my deck comp. If I could change one thing about this game I would either make the map smaller or go to a node system. You can spend hours taking every fight on the map and then fight the boss with the same deck and the fight will basically be the same. Maybe its different on the higher difficulties but it's not gonna hold my attention to get there. Edit: Formatting. TLDR: Worth for $2, but won't hold your attention for very long. Overall I'd give it a 6/10.

For a $15 game, I'd give it 4/5 stars. For a $5 game, it's an absolute steal. Not too complex, and can be repetitive. But unless you're playing on the easiest difficulty, most challenges can't be overcome by throwing out the best units willy-nilly. There's a good amount of strategy and forethought required.

To everyone saying it's too easy: You guys. There are multiple difficulties. Pick a harder one???????? if it's still too easy, maybe it's because you went into the harder difficulty with all your runes unlocked. me personally i'm playing difficulty 3 without any runes carried over from easier difficulties.

Despite my recommendation I have some criticisms. 1) The game is too easy. I haven't lost a single fight since I started playing and I've already beaten the third King. The fact that your units always have initiative over the enemy makes everything very predictable and easy. The only somewhat challenging fights are the caravan miniboss (harder than anything else in the game sadly) and the first 5-10 fights in the run when you don't yet have any decent units. But once you get even a single Wizard or Berserker, it becomes very hard to lose. 2) The fights become repetitive relatively quickly. Once you have 1 or 2 good units you can use those pretty much until the end of the map. There is a lot of unit variety, but it almost doesn't matter because the game is so easy, so you never have to experiment. 3) The sound design is not good. The overworld music is somewhat cute, but the "music" during the fights, even the boss fights, is just really boring. Despite all this I am having an enjoyable time with the game and for the low price it's really quite good.

This was a fun couple of evenings and scratched a similar itch to Loop Hero. Good: A competent deck builder Decent variety of enemies Simple but well presented story Taste: Music and Art style aren't universally appealing but fully functional. Bad: The same general win button strategy covers each world and the challenge is largely getting to the point it can happen Obvious brain dead victories still take up clicks and play time to no meaningful conclusion I enjoyed this. I look forward to playing it again if it's expanded with some more variety.
