It looks crunchy, but's it's a really well thought out and put together RE homage game

I have not played any Resident Evil games and I love this The screenshots didn't really sell the game and neither did the reviews, which all kept saying "it's like RE" since I have not played any of the 1-3 Resident Evil games (or any other spinoffs with that template). What made me purchase it was the ratings, and so, I went into the game blind as to how it plays. From the screenshots, you'd expect it to be clunky as f*ck or have the graphics slowly put you off, but I was genuinely surprised as to how much I enjoyed the game. If you don't already know, it's a survival horror (think guns to defend yourself but never enough ammo ) with puzzles to solve and pants to sh*t . Every encounter feels stressful and you will either try to aim for weak spots and make every shot count, or find yourself stuck knee deep in the hell that you brought upon yourself. Yes, you can f*ck yourself over if you don't play well, as it is an actual survival horror. Your weapons, while not many, each feel unique and have their own place and time . You would constantly evaluate what weapon to use and what ammo to preserve for later. An example would be the Revolver which you'd expect to only deal more damage and have nothing else special. However its bullets penetrate enemies so, if you manage to line up enemies, you can headshot all of them at once which is INCREDIBLY satisfying, seeing as how hard it is to pull off. The trade-off is that it doesn't instantly fire on clicking, but rather the hammer is pulled back and then released to fire, creating a half-a-second delay before you actually fire which really creates those moments of stress you'd want in a survival horror. Locations are pretty varied (fortunately) . Each part has its own design, textures and atmosphere so it really does create the environmental variation needed to keep the game feeling fresh. Exploration is rewarded (and at times encouraged to stay stocked) and they also throw in optional puzzles/side quests. Speaking of puzzles, they are fun ! They include both parts of obtaining puzzle pieces (and knowing where to go to use them) and actually solving the puzzle (e.g. solving riddles). They're not pushovers that an infant can solve and they're also not so difficult that they would take the fun out of the game. Enemy encounters are stressful and dangerous . Sometimes you have to face them head on, other times you can try to skip them but if you ever come back there (let's say during backtracking) they'll still be there waiting for you. So, many times it is an actual mind puzzle to decide whether to sacrifice ammo/health to kill them or skip them and hope you don't have to come back. You really pick your poison. Fortunately if you do decide to skip them, every time you come back to that location, their position is reset so they're not just camping the door, waiting for you. Enemy types and behaviors do keep the game fresh during its 3 hour playtime and boss fights (with unique scenarios) are thrown into the mix to elevate the combat even more. As for the story, it's not an over the top thing that tries putting too much in, but at the same time it's not really that deep or explorable. You do learn more as you progress (mostly the side stories) but it never take center-stage. Not that it needs to. And finally, for all the horror fans out there, this game includes many easter eggs and nods to classic and popular horror media out there. Yes, it does go as niche as let's say, a Half-Life standalone Mod *wink*. Final Remarks Overall, despite it taking me 3 hours to beat the game, the overall experience felt much longer. If I had to guess how long it took me to finish it I'd say 4-5 hours and the only reason I know didn't is because Steam keeps record of my playtime. Otherwise that's how the experience felt. It didn't feel short. If you want a good horror game, for its price, this game is a no-brainer purchase. I highly recommend it, whether you like RE games or not.

Fantastic short horror themed game. Don't be fooled by the simple graphics, it's part of the charm. With nods to classic horror games like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Cry of Fear and Amnesia just to name a few, Nightmare of Decay is able to blend survival, puzzle solving and dark fantasy all in one without going overboard on any of it, or taking itself too seriously. The game is surprisingly well polished and smooth to play. The gun-play feels just right and item spawns re just the right balance. The developer has also gone to the effort to give this game more replay value with a classic zombie horde (round-based survival) mode, a dungeon escape mode and unlock-able extras like infinite ammo weapons for further campaign runs. Overall, it's an awesome little package of a game! Great price too, even not on sale. Absolutely 100% recommend!

The game draws heavily from both Resident Evil and Amnesia, with certain scenes and puzzles feeling less like inspiration and more like direct copy-and-paste. It’s a bit disappointing (at least, for me) that the developers chose replication over innovation, especially given the potential to build something fresh from those solid foundations. Resource management is tight, and the combat feels clunky, which makes the game especially challenging for some players, particularly on harder difficulties. It definitely demands a bit of gaming skill. However, the game is still enjoyable and well-designed. The atmosphere is incredibly immersive, and I found myself fully engaged from start to finish. Despite its flaws, I truly loved the experience.
