Wonderful Game I picked this up for less than $10 USD with all of its DLC on sale. I'm a huge fan of telltale games and choose your own adventure games. Some of my favorite games include The Wolf Among Us, Dispatch, The Walking Dead, etc. I have a HUGE soft spot for the genre. So, what is this game? It's a mix of a Full Motion Video (FMV) game & a choose your own adventure with elements of a game like Papers, Please tossed in. It also lightly reminds me of Five Nights at Freddy's - you sitting in an editing station stationary vs sitting in the security station in the original FNAF. You play as the live editor of a news station. You choose camera angles, what to censor or not to censor. All of these factor into the branching path of the story. Will you support the government & toe the party line? Will you support the resistance? Will you remain neutral? What about your co-workers? Your family? etc. It has around 14 different endings & tons of DLC available. So, there is value here if you like this genre like I do. Its undeniable - from my perspective at least. Overall, solid premise & wonderful game. The Downside Some elements of the story are delivered through simple text & images. These segments also effect the branching narrative. They involve your family & can feel like a bit of a drag. The reading can be a bit of a chore. You have no faces to associate with the characters that are your family. So you have no real way to empathize with them other than "this is your family, here are their names, you should care for them." It's also very British. I put this in downsides because....I'm American. Sometimes British humor or terms can fall flat to some Americans. They should keep that in mind. For instance. Censoring swear words is a core part of gameplay. Words I, as an American, wouldn't consider profane - the game does. That's just because of that small cultural difference. So be aware of that going in, but its not a huge deal. I also did encounter a couple of crashes with the game. It mainly involved me pausing & walking away from the game of an extended period of time. If the game did not crash it would have some hiccups upon my return. Not a common issue, but one to be aware of going in. TLDR I really like the concept of the game and its right up my alley; however, the text based aspects that deliver the narrative outside of your characters job feel clunky & leave something more to be desired. Overall. Solid 7.5-8/10. Worth every penny of the $10 USD. 100% buy this on sale if you can.
The game itself is very fun, but the centrism of it all is enormously irritating. The gameplay is innovative, the acting and production is top notch, and the rewards for curiosity, to go back and see what you might have missed, are plentiful. It takes up an egregious amount of storage, however, when you think about how much FMV is in this it kinda tracks. The humor connects when it isn't overshadowed by the lack of position. The biggest issue, however, with this game, are the text moments. They are slow and dreary and strangely cumbersome, and I think a stronger presentation for those parts would be preferable and achievable, but the rest of the game is worth sitting through these sections. I would love to play a version of this with an actual point of view, but absent that, I'll settle for the one we have. Get it if you like managing multiple game mechanics at a time and can endure political delusions that should have died with grunge and should have been buried in 2016, or if you like South Park but only before it went 'woke,'
Worth playing for sure, but the really weird politics only felt weirder this time around. I think it would have been better and more effective if it wasn't trying to be so quirky the whole time. There are really genuine moments of pathos that are undercut by constant jokes. Plus, (despite the game clearly disliking both parties it presents) the things it decides to present as evil for Advance are... strange. Like maybe I'm just too woke but are we really still making a big deal about tax cuts for 1%ers. It really wants to portray both sides as well meaning when... I would argue frankly neither side is irl! I think a choice between truly bad and truly bad (perhaps both dressed as being nice) would have been more effective compared to the choice we get between misguided utopianism and weirdly anarchic conservatism. Would love to see a more serious version of this but also that version wouldn't have Patrick Bannon 2 which is one of my all time favorite bits in anything ever.
This game is arguably one of the best games off the last decade. It is put together perfectly. I love this game. It truly is one of those "choices matter" games. You can back an extreme government or an equally extreme radical organization that may attempt to overthrow it. It really is all up to you when it comes to how the story will play out. 10/10 game for me.
