After playing Oaken a few hours I wrote a very positive review as I very much enjoyed playing the game. Now, after completing most of the content I'm less enthusiastic about the game, at least for a more casual gamer like myself. I've played many of the more popular card battlers on Steam and have completed most of them on normal difficulty. Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to beat the final boss (or even sub boss) with the second unlockable hero. For me the difficulty spikes in the sub boss and boss levels is too great. I did beat the final boss with the first hero. You can then unlock another hero which I did. There is a normal difficulty which I am playing on and a more casual difficulty that is too easy. I find most battles except a handful of sub boss battles to be reasonable difficulty. Also, I only got as far as I did because I made sure to exit battles I was sure to lose before I got killed. Without this "cheat" I wouldn't have gotten anywhere with this game. For more casual gamers like myself I can't recommend this game. For the better gamers out there this game is very fun.

This game is so extremely derivative but it gets it all right. The art is absolutely perfect. The tactical gameplay bangs. Would recommend.

I like the music. I like the aesthetics. I like the idea of the tactics in the game. Overall though, I have mixed feelings about the game. I do want to say beforehand that it's definitely worth the price, and it's clear that the devs have put in a lot of work and love into the product. Personally, the runs I've had with the game have felt somewhat unsatisfying. I never really felt that strong, even though I objectively was. I found most wisps (attachable upgrades) rather useless. I found most units pretty weak for their cost. I found most spells pretty weak. I disregarded nearly every trinket because I found them too situational. I haven't unlocked every card, I'm only character level 30, but still. Progress didn't really feel like progress to me. The only units I found worth fielding were cheap 1-2 mana cost ones because of their high efficiency and spammability, and 5 mana beaters with high stats. And that's just it, just stats. Some units have synergies or effects, but I never found them worth using over just raw stats. I basically never used my guide (your 'special' summon unit) because all the ones I have unlocked have terrible stats for 5 mana, and by the time I get to 5 mana, the fight is already solved. I found that most fights really end within the first few turns. Just flood the field and overwhelm. The faster you outpace the enemy spawns, the easier you win. Once you gain the numerical advantage, you have positional advantage. Once you have positional advantage, you have tactical advantage. Your advantages stack up so fast that you have free reign over the field. Only time where it doesn't really work is against bosses, which is when you play your high cost beaters and you just surround them and brutally execute them. By the time I really felt strong, the run was already over, and the final boss dead. I never really got to enjoy my build. Maybe these problems are solved at higher difficulties. Maybe unlocks further down the line are more worthwhile. But I just don't feel engaged enough to find out.

Oaken is a very unique Roguelite Deckbuilder. It takes what you love about the genre, and puts it into a Grid-Based combat system. It has a lot of strategy and Resource Management weaved into it, so it is complex enough to keep you hooked. And although the difficulty is quite hard on your first playthrough, once you understand the game more it gets a lot easier. My only nitpick is most of my runs have lasted 3+ hours, and even though there is a save system to come back to it later. I like to finish my runs in one playthrough and 3 hours is a lot of time.

Got free time. Downloaded the demo. Got hooked after few minutes. Art is nice. Tactical tools (units, upgrades, field-modifier, etc) are thematic and various. Definitely wanted to buy after demo. Been anticipating launch for few days. Hoped that it wouldn't be expensive. Launch. Does not disappoint at all. Cheap. So I bought the supporter pack for such good game. Game is quite challenging in higher diff. The only downside for now is it's still early access. So it can be cleared in few hours (with all side objectives cleared), however there is a lot of replayability and unlockables. Great job, developers. Looking forward to updates and more content/story/new modes.
