Decent. A lot of games have attempted the whole "chess with novel move sets" thing before, but this game pulls it off a little better than what I've typically seen, seemingly manage to grapple with the inherent ridiculous balancing of giving chess pieces new move capabilities a little better than most others have that I've encountered in the past. Overall delivery package could definitely use polish: there is a lack of linting on potential moves and you feel a little bit starved for information. One potential easy fix that would help a lot I think would be using two different colours for pieces different move axes, and possibly making use of arrows to show the pathway when hovering over an axis. I also think the game needs better notice for when you will be ending a move in check, really it should just straight up have a warning dialog IMHO like "this move will end your turn in check - are you sure?" because of the nature of instant death and the many novel types of pieces. Best of all I think would be a highlight over all pieces on the board that are currently "in danger"or something like that. With a bit of fine tuning and work on extra visibility as regards the state of the board for the player, I think this title could be an all time great. Definitely a really excellent design effort, full props to the developers for producing such a great game. Amount of content is quite thin and probably that couldn't have been any other way because same with all of these chess sort of titles the format and the fundamental game that they're working from does fairly limit the content space (there's only so many different ways to move around pieces under chess board rules, after all), so with that in mind it might be one to pick up on sale. I grabbed it at 50% off and i think it was WELL worth it at that price. At full price I'd say it's probably still worth it but not exactly excellent value for money. So if you're skint wait for a sale, and of course otheriwse just pick it up whenever, everyone will get some mileage here! It's also not just a game for chess fans, non-chess players will like this one just fine. If anything in my experience actual chess players seem to struggle with these chess themed games for some reason; I guess because they can't get their mind out of the traditional chess sapce that its used to operating in so it doesn't deal well with the novelty. Anyway, The Ouroboros King gets a thumbs up from me!

The game is fun in general though the system on how much gold you get each round could be reworked entirely because the current one is hit or miss, you also get punished for buying stuff that gives you extra turns because those extra turns in one turn count as two and take money twice as much, also if you get an extra turn on a turn where you'd already win you basically have to waste a turn and lose money with no gain, also the having to replay the game 5 times for the actual ending is stupid because you don't get anything new after 1 win so you literally just replay the exact same thing 4 more times just for slight dialogue changes, and the final achievement is basically rng because doing it without the modifier that's entirely rng is next to impossible

The Ouroboros King is a fun roguelike chess game with a lot of new and interesting pieces. You have to win quickly in order to gain gold for upgrades and the AI is often quite difficult, so it can be rather challenging, particularly before you figure out all of the new pieces and how they typically work.

This game plays out too similarly to a game of chess to the point where it doesn't really stand out. If you're looking for a chess game that has roguelike elements, buy Shotgun King instead, it's much more enjoyable. UPDATE: It's more of a thumbs sideways than a thumbs down. UPDATE 2: I would recommend this game. It's better once it gets going, it's a bit slow starting off.
