The gameplay is fine. The job system could be better and more varied, but it's still pretty decent. Despite other reviews, I never had any issues with the audio. My issue is with the writing; a few of the stories are interesting and well-written. Most of them however are frankly childishly predictable poorly written nonsense. I seldom skip scenes but I find the only way I am able to keep playing is to skip some of the stories entirely. The village building is okay, but the village feels dead and empty. I can make it pretty and decorate, but the people stand still in their houses doing nothing at all. I read that this may change late game through some village advancement, but this seems like a 'feature' that should be part of the village from the very beginning. The game is okay, and I would still recommend it, but I probably won't ever replay it.

I think the game is really good, it has the Octopath feeling and really fun fights, as well as great graphics and incredible music (still composed by the awesome Yasunori Nishiki, of course). I'd say it does start a bit slow : the first arc ranges from "meh" to "ok", but the game keeps getting better with more and more stuff to do, and the fighting system (which isn't exactly like OT1 & 2) really starts shining. The story gets better as well by then. But yeah, the first few chapters are a bit slow. TL;DR : I think it's really good even though the 1st act can be a bit meh. I find combat really great (possibly even more fun than Octopath 2 ?), story/writing is in the same tier as OT1 and maybe OT2 in my opinion, and village-rebuilding is fun but not a key selling point. I see a lot of people complaining about the writing and the villains : firstly, the game goes *way* beyond the first trio you see on all the promotional material, and I'd say the 2nd arc is one of the most interesting in Octopath (counting 1 & 2). Secondly, yes there is a lot of "pure black vs pure white" morality, with very evil baddies and very good heroes, it's no Xenogears... but that's most J-RPGs, no ? :D Even Octopath 1 & 2 have some very awkward writing (all of Therion in OT1) or "cartoonishly evil" characters (Oswald's antagonist in OT2). To each their own, but personally I thought the writing/characters were somewhat on par with OT1 & 2, especially with some heavy lifting from the 2nd arc (mind you, I haven't finished the game yet). And if you don't care about the story, you can easily Skip dialogues/scenes to get to the real star of the game... ...the battle system is fundamentally the same, but this time, characters can't multiclass and you can recruit a lot of allies (though I'd like to recruit them faster TBH). This time you fight with 4 pairs of chars on frontline & backline, and you can swap them during combat, which I find incredibly fun : have a pair with 1 fighter who multihits to break foes, and swap them for a char with only single-target nukes on broken targets ; pair a tank with a healer who has the ability to swap back to backline instantly after healing ; some chars even have skills that work when they are in the backline to help/heal/buff their paired frontliner... It's really, really fun... but you do have to play a bit before it starts shining. There's also an entire "equippable skills" system : each char has a set list of skills to unlock like in OT1 & OT2 (and chars of the same class have different skills, so the first Thief you recruit won't have the same skills as your main character if you make them a Thief). However, you can additionnally equip them with EquipSkills to customize them more, once you've acquired the EqSkills one way or another (rewards, stealing, chests, JP-mastery...) ; so for example, your Scholar/Mage has Fire and Ice spells, well you can equip additionnal Wind or Dark spells, or give them First Aid, a Fire nuke or a Fire multihit or a fire AoE... It might sound like "multiclassing with extra steps", but I feel it's actually "more customisable multiclassing", if that makes sense. I guess I should also mention the whole village rebuilding feature... it's okay. I think it's a bit poorly paced, and I've played more fun things like that before (Dark Chronicle/Dark Cloud 2, my beloved), but it's inofensive. I like building stuff in games, so that's good enough for me. The story beats for the whole rebuilding questline are a bit long though, and IMO the real weak point writing-wise. To each their own, but I played the sh*t out of Octopath 1 & 2, and enjoyed quite a few J-RPGs when I was a scampy whippersnapper, and I'm really happy with this one.

After 50 Hours+ in on this... in short it's a RPG that i would totally recommend if you are interested in one. Definitely worth the full price even better if it's on discount. What's Octopath Traveler 0 is all about? If you have played Octopath Traveler 1 then the story of OT 0 are adventures that happens before the timeline of OT 1. If you have played the Gacha OT Cotc then you already know most of the story (but i personally find OT 0 better overall not just story telling wise, but gameplay and interaction wise as well compare to OT Cotc.) Difference compare to OT 1 and OT 2 :; 1. You play as the "main protagonist" instead of 1 of the 8 character style in OT 1 & 2. ( I personally don't mind this, since the whole story in OT 0 alone is pretty long enough and very enjoyable. ) 2. As mentioned above, since we play as the Main protagonist, in OT 0 we can use path action anytime. Unlike in OT1&2 where you need specific character for specific path action, so in OT 0 you don't need to keep travel to a bar from time to time inorder to swap character for certain path actions. 3. In OT1&2 we can only have 4 character in a party (except for those endgame secret boss fight where you utilize everyone, imo that don't count, we mainly goes around in a party of 4) BUT in OT 0, you can party up to 8 characters from the get-go, in a front and back roll setup (which is interesting for me, and it also bring in new ways to battle) 4. The Job system are slightly different in OT 0, you are only able to change the Main Protagonist Job. BUT there are like 30+ ish extra Character that you can invite on your journey and later on learn Skills from them (pretty cool, allow for some interesting team build and setup) 5. Town building system as you progress story~ (before playing i'm very concern on it and worried that it won't be good or impactful to make things interesting) but i'm proven wrong, being able to gather resource and build town, watch it grows as you progress story, and not only that, the town offers stuff that would help your adventure in many ways as well. 6. If you have played OT 2, you will be familiar with the Day&Night cycle feature, well OT 0 doesn't have it. 7. OT 2 have better shading and lighting that makes the HD2D style pops, while OT 0 is a step back on this... (i feel like the graphic stuff is a mix of OT 1 and OT Cotc? that's just my opinion, but it's not affecting the charm of OT 0 in anyways so.... all good for me) So... Pro's and Con's Pro's:: 1. Battle system and team building are pretty fun in this game. 2. Story are pretty good and interesting. 3. Music... well... IT'S AMAZING !! Love it <3 4. Even tho there are no Difficulty options for us to choose, but from time to time there will be Battle or Boss battle that requires some braincell to figure things out. Con's Imo... the only down side is... the game is pretty long, so you will need to spend a lot of time on it depends on how familiar you are with the OT series, if you are familiar 70~80's hours for the true ending and all... if you never played any OT series game, then this may or may not take's up to 100hours to complete... But personally i don't find this being a down side for OT 0, but it may be a concern for others that doesn't have too much time for gaming... but if you don't mind the time it takes to finish OT 0 then this is a very good RPG to play. Oh and there's no New Game+ so... if NG+ is a pitch for ya then ( I STILL HIGHLY RECOMMEND PLAYING THIS STILL ) Score ?? Personally i would give it a 8.5~9 out of 10. Very good RPG~ <3

To keep it simple, did you play OT 1 and/or 2 and enjoy them? If so, buy this game right now. It's up to the standards of the first 2 games, so this should be an easy purchase for you. If you love oldschool JRPG's with modern ammenities, this game is like a warm blanket.
