I really liked this game, in spite of all the negative reviews, the combat system wasn't that bad, I actually found it to be a really cool and unique mechanic. However... why is the only saveable point before the final boss also before 2 filler fights and 3 unskippable cutscenes? I understand not wanting players to skip the final moments, but couldn't you add an autosave at the start of the end boss?
A fantastic game in every sense of the word. I loved every part of it especially Styx. I absolutely love him!!!! He made me laugh the whole time. I’m so glad he has his own games where he’s the main character and I can’t wait to play them! The game sadly is a bit too linear, unfortunately. It’s mostly a cycle of moving forward, fighting a bunch of enemies and reaching your destination. Rinse and repeat 🥲 Still, it’s an excellent game overall, and the soundtrack is amazing. Of course it is!!! It’s composed by Olivier Deriviere, one of my favorite composers of all time! As for Arkail, he was frustrating and honestly got on my nerves lmao. He’s the stereotypical angry orc protagonist, and I just didn’t like him. To be honest I kind of wish he had died at the end as a sacrifice or something 😙 Anyway, I’m really devastated and heartbroken about what happened to Spiders. I’ll always love this studio for creating so many of my favorite games 💔
This is the first game I had in my library. Bought it as CD with a Steam Key. Never played it however. I played the first Styx game which I loved and started the second before life came inbetween. Saw the third installment of Styx coming out in a few days and remembered that I never finished it. Played the first Styx game and then finally finished the second, also with a fresh start. And then I thought why not play the real OG as well, while my memory is still fresh? And boy am I glad I did. So lets have a look at the good, the bad, the ugly. First things first, I loved the story. It is really dark and much darker then the two Styx titles I played. Slavery, genocide, religious extremism, torture and war are shown in a gritty, realistic and uncompromising way. Arkail, the main protagonist, is a great character as well, he truly is a berserker, as well as a freedom fighter. When he berserks, he stops to rip people in half, even if this means he is vulnerable for a very long animation, instakills Styx if he is too slow to get out of the way and takes the double tap to a new level. Styx on the other hand is the weakest link of the duo funnily. I knew Styx as the sneaky, sarcastic badass from the Styx titles and was a bit disappointed with his "humor" and quips. He is borderline pathetic at some stages which just clashes with his personality from the latter titles. Gameplay is also a bit boring and sometimes frustrating. Levels are linear kill funnels, which is not as bad, but makes traversing frustrating sometimes due to pathing issue. The pause and qeue attacks gameplay is also just okay, "The Dark Eye/Das Schwarze Auge" implemented that way better for example. Rage is a fun mechanic, that you have to balance a bit, timing and using the rage strategically, if there is an unreachable enemy for Arkail (pure melee) it gets frustrating if he then charges Styx and instakills him, making the enemies unreachable until he calms down and can rezz Styx. Skill issue I guess, but there are some areas, where you can't really see the enemies on balconies, creating a nasty surprise. Someone here said: Play it on easy for the story. Thank you brother, great call. Tl;dr: For next to nothing, as it is often sold, a clear buy for fans. You play it for the gritty story and great worldbuilding complementing the Styx games, not for the gameplay. It is decently long, but not unreasonable, I got nearly 10h out of it, doing every sidequest except one or so.
