Came for Styx, stayed for the incredible story

Interesting mix of action and tactical game, bit outdated in terms of both gameplay and visuals but the music and especially the story stand strong. Items and skills variety is low, so is the balance, I went with 'mage' specialization for Styx and meh it seemed really weak for some reason, to the point I stopped using it at all. Combat becomes repetitive quite fast. Maps are rather straight forward, don't expect much freedom here, thanks to that game isn't too long, which is something I actually liked. Played on normal, as people were complaining about higher difficulties and even though I didn’t have much problems, few fights were quite close and consisted of multiple stages without checkpoints, which makes me believe harder difficulty could be frustrating. Would recommend for anyone who played Styx and would like to expand their knowledge about the universe, although others might also enjoy this unique story.

5/5 Story - A criminally underrated RPG with heart, personality, and a unique duo dynamic you won’t find elsewhere. Worth playing for the story alone. (I finished Styx Games saga before it) 2/5 Combat, Repetitive - you can still get shot by an arrow behind a wall, stealth detection area is funny you can get away with take-downs 5/5 OST 4/5 Maps - Despite being closed area Short, focused, and to the point. No pointless padding. Each zone pushes the story forward, and the world feels unique even if areas are compact. TLDR: Short story but a great one, and for the price i would say 100% worth playing or checking it out.

Of Orcs and Men, developed by Cyanide Studio and Spiders and published by Cyanide Studio and Nacon, is a dark fantasy action RPG that stands out by giving players the perspective of traditionally marginalized races in the genre: orcs and goblins. Set in a world dominated by humans who oppress other races, the game follows the journey of Arkail, a powerful orc warrior, and Styx, a cunning goblin assassin, as they embark on a mission to eliminate the human emperor. The premise flips conventional fantasy storytelling on its head, presenting themes of rebellion, oppression, and camaraderie through the lens of its nonhuman protagonists. The narrative is one of the game’s strongest elements. Players witness the interplay between Arkail and Styx, whose contrasting personalities and abilities create a compelling dynamic. Arkail embodies brute strength and honor, while Styx relies on stealth and wit, often providing comic relief and clever commentary amidst tense situations. This duality not only enriches character development but also allows the story to explore moral and tactical dilemmas, highlighting the complexities of rebellion against a powerful oppressor. Although the story is engaging and ambitious, some moments lack the emotional depth that could have fully elevated the characters’ struggles, leaving certain narrative beats feeling underexplored. Gameplay in Of Orcs and Men blends real-time combat with tactical elements. Players can switch between Arkail and Styx, leveraging each character’s strengths to navigate both combat scenarios and environmental challenges. Arkail excels in direct confrontation with heavy melee attacks, while Styx thrives in stealth-based maneuvers, assassination, and infiltration. Players can pause the action to issue commands strategically, coordinating the duo’s abilities to tackle tougher enemies or complex scenarios. While this system provides tactical depth, it can occasionally feel cumbersome due to unintuitive controls and uneven pacing, making certain encounters frustrating despite their potential for strategic satisfaction. The game’s visual presentation supports its dark, war-torn setting. Environments range from devastated battlefields to heavily fortified human strongholds, capturing the oppressive atmosphere of the world. Character models are detailed, effectively distinguishing between orcs, goblins, and humans, while animations are functional though not particularly groundbreaking. While the art direction successfully conveys the bleak tone of the story, it doesn’t consistently impress in comparison to other contemporary RPGs, sometimes feeling functional rather than fully cinematic. Audio plays an important role in establishing the game’s atmosphere. The soundtrack, rich with orchestral and tension-driven motifs, complements both combat and exploration, heightening the sense of urgency and danger. Voice acting is generally solid, particularly in portraying Arkail’s stoicism and Styx’s mischievousness, adding personality and charm to the duo. However, some sound effects can be repetitive, and certain combat cues occasionally fail to stand out, slightly diminishing immersion during extended play sessions. Reception of Of Orcs and Men reflects this balance of strengths and weaknesses. The game has been praised for its unique narrative perspective, character interactions, and ambitious world-building. Players interested in a fresh take on the fantasy RPG experience often appreciate the opportunity to play as characters typically cast as villains. On the other hand, criticisms frequently target gameplay mechanics, pacing issues, and minor technical limitations, which can interrupt the otherwise engaging experience. In summary, Of Orcs and Men is a distinctive entry in the fantasy RPG genre that delivers an intriguing narrative and memorable character dynamics. Its strength lies in its storytelling and the duality of Arkail and Styx, which provides both dramatic tension and strategic gameplay variety. While technical and pacing issues may challenge some players, those willing to engage with its unique perspective will find a rewarding and thought-provoking adventure that stands apart from conventional fantasy narratives. I don't review a lot of Steam games but felt the need to review this one as mainstream critic scores likely hurt this one despite them being generous to higher budget games that don't deserve the praise they get. Of Orcs and Men is essentially a very basic combat focused RPG with a linear story. It doesn't try and do too much, it doesn't overstay it's welcome but if you engage with the combat system, the game is a lot of fun and is rarely frustrating. It felt like a very scaled down Bioware RPG that includes very small, cozy hubs that include some side quests while most of the actual quests / missions are linear with the odd bit of loot. The story is engaging, music and presentation is surprisingly very good and I found the writing, while nothing special, better than most modern games, especially the dialogue between the two mains. A 7/10 and well worth it at the sale price.
