April 2026
I picked up OPERATOR, and it genuinely exceeded my expectations. Honest review from an actual combat veteran. Given my real-life combat experience and hands-on familiarity with a wide range of small arms and tactical gear, I can confidently say this game delivers one of the most authentic shooting experiences among modern tactical shooters in recent years. If Ready or Not simulates SWAT or HRT operations, OPERATOR feels much closer to a SOF experience. There are no penalties for overstepping authority or violating Rules of Engagement — no zip ties, no evidence collection — just pure focus on weapons, tactics, and survival. The arsenal is impressive: pistols, PDWs, assault rifles, machine guns, sniper systems, even grenade launchers. And the depth of customization is where the game truly shines — it’s essentially a sandbox for anyone passionate about military hardware. Want to clear rooms with overwhelming firepower? Take the M249. Looking to channel a Delta Force operator? Run a classic M4 setup with a PEQ-15 and an EOTECH — timeless. Prefer something closer to home? Grab an AK-74 fitted with attachments from the Ukrainian brand KRYK and step into the boots of a Ukrainian assault trooper. Customization goes deep: grips, foregrips, handguards, stocks, mounting adapters, LPVOs, red dots, magnifiers, muzzle devices, suppressors — you name it. OPERATOR also stands out with its mission settings. You’re not confined to the U.S. — you’ll operate in Afghanistan, Syria, Ukraine, and beyond. At daytime or at night. That variety adds a lot to the immersion, and seeing Ukraine included is especially appreciated. Enemy resistance actually feels real here. Whether you’re assaulting a ship, clearing a residential building, or pushing through a fortified compound, you’re constantly under pressure. This isn’t a casual firefight — it’s controlled chaos. A flashbang detonates in a hallway to your left, while over the radio on your right someone is shouting, “I’m hit!”. The intensity per second is off the charts. Gunfights are dangerous in a way that few games manage to replicate. This isn’t Battlefield — there’s no magic revive. If you take a round to a critical area, you’re in serious trouble. Survival becomes a matter of seconds and decisions. You’ll find yourself with a splint on one arm, a tourniquet cutting into your leg, a syringe of painkillers somewhere at your feet, and the remnants of an Israeli bandage nearby — trying to stay in the fight just a little longer. For me, this is a solid 8/10. The drawbacks are there — a somewhat unintuitive interface and occasional AI hiccups — but they don’t overshadow the core experience. What truly sets OPERATOR apart is the feeling of real combat. The need to suppress, maneuver, treat wounds, and make split-second decisions under pressure. And most importantly — the tension. The kind that gets under your skin. The kind that feels just a little too real. Highly recommended. P.S. I am very grateful for your awards and reactions, but please DO NOT spend your Steam Points. If you want to thank me (I am not sure for what, though) — there are free options: "helpful review" and "funny review". Thanks!

Stumbled upon this game while browsing the store, saw it on sale (10 bucks), told my buddy about it as we were in discord call, saw it was recently updated, we both said, eh why not, We launched the game and we were immediately greeted with a banger soundtrack in the main menu, the game then drops you in a lobby and lets you figure everything out yourself, you have a workbench to build your own firearms and it is fantastic probably the best aside from Tarkovs, cant wait until more parts are added, all real world brands I might add same goes for gear. Everybody gets their own locker and workbench, there's a shooting range to test and zero firearms, eye relief is a thing to worry about etc. etc. its awesome. You pick an operation via a computer, can select day or night, there's a briefing room to go over planning with your buddies (you can write on the dry erase board even over the map!) then off you go with your gear and boy is this game a gem, from the pace to the immersion it's fantastic hidden gem right up there with RoN id say better the potential is infinite. It does have its Early Access Wonkiness but it has a SOLID foundation and doesn't distract with gameplay, especially with the recent update. I highly suggest giving it a shot with some buddies, give it time, learn the game, take it slow and you'll be rewarded with some of the most immersive gameplay out there. I recommend running a night op in Afghan, get off discord and use in game radio voip, plan your method of attack, assign call signs, get your gear straight, take your time, turn up the volume, don't forget your NVGs and PEQs and pray you get out alive to see your mom again. 9/potential keep cooking devs.

It's early on in development, however I cannot stress this enough: this game has LEGS. If you can put up with a smidge of clunkiness and work in progress features, then you're in for a treat. Pros: Granular yet fluent controls (once you're used to them) let you have complete control over movement and positioning to your advantage. Gun customisation, while not a huge catalogue just yet, is phenomenal. Not quite Tarkov level of detail down to springs, but the adjustability of every optic and rail positioning lets you get a gun feeling just right. The adjustable eye relief slider is a very nice touch. You can make some very sexy, and very cursed builds. Visual are fantastic. Different infil locations and times of day are well reflected and the night vision feels spot on. Helicopter infils are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesome. Would like to see what else they do with them. Operator customisation is great and also functional! Cons: Some of the overlapping controls can be tough to get right in a tense moment as some weapons handle differently to others. Just something to get used to, not a huge issue. I've pushed many a corner to find I've not released the bolt correctly. It's not always easy to check if a weapon starts the mission chambered or in what firing mode. A few quality of life inclusions could be nice, for instance when checking a mag, an indication of if it's full, partial or empty would be neat. A self pat-down mechanic to check what you've currently got left. Not really a con, just would be a nice to have without breaking immersion too much. Exfil often bugs out when I'm playing with a friend and one of us is KIA. That could be personal error though. At this stage there isn't a huge amount of content mission-wise. Fully understanding it's early access, however there's only around 8 missions at time of writing. You can customise the difficulty and amount of bad guys which is good though. Some alternate mission objectives would be neat. The enemy AI is a bit.. dumb? Especially engaging at range. They often just stand even right after you slime their buddy. There's not really an active website or roadmap that I've been able to find. There's a discord with lots of users, though can be hard to find concrete info. - There are so many details which scream that the devs have a proper passion for the genre. Top work to them, looking forward to more.

Operator is, somehow, way better than Ground Branch for me. The customization is unhinged, the gunplay slaps, and the dead‑zone free‑aim scratches that Arma 3 itch perfectly. Yeah, it’s janky, but the core gameplay is so good that I keep shrugging the problems off and diving back in. The boat mission was my first real “Operator moment.” I kicked a door open like a hero, only for it to bounce back and wedge itself across the staircase, trapping me like a tactical idiot. I should’ve been mad, but honestly? I laughed. This game’s chaos is part of its charm. The jank is real, though. Some guns start ♥♥♥♥♥♥, some don’t. The AI has no scopes but can still laser‑beam you from across the map. Sometimes they one‑shot you while aiming in the wrong direction. Sometimes they track you through cover like they’ve installed wallhacks. About 80% of my deaths feel like the game just decided “nope, you’re done.” The menus are rough, reloads can’t be canceled, and swapping to your pistol feels like wading through molasses. And since it’s made by one guy, some of this might never get fixed. But despite all the nonsense, I’m having a great time. The movement, stances, and full‑body control are unmatched. The gun customization is the craziest I’ve seen in any shooter. If you like free‑aim, mil‑sim flavor, and lone‑wolf gameplay, this thing delivers. Just be ready for some BS along the way. PS if dev reads this, please make it possible for single players to be capable of making a higher rating than a C on some of the bigger, harder maps. It isn't possible to speed run a level to make an A or S rating on missions as a solo player.

I'm recommending this to support the project BUT 1. If you expect a polished, complete experience, go somewhere else. This game is still in its very early stages and totally needs another couple of years to cook properly. 2. The foundation is really solid and I liked what I've found so far. 3. Not for solo players. PROS - Really good feeling overall. Weapons have a realistic "oomph" and every shot feels meaningful - The game forces the player to study an approach before starting an operation. Rushing in or forgetting to check a corner usually means you end up back at the lobby real quickly. - Enemies, for the most part, react well to your presence. Footsteps, suppressed shots, creaking doors opening and (afaik) even VOIP will give out your position. - Incredible customization for guns. You can change almost any aspect of your weapons, from the barrel to the stock to the ammo you will use. This is FUNDAMENTAL if you want to succeed. Know your guns. - Gore and blood are there, and wounded groaning enemies can be finished off with well placed rounds. True grit. - Extremely deep and funny lobby activities. You can sit on chairs and choose missions from an actual Windows inspired terminal that lets you tweak even the time format in the lower corner. Hysterical. CONS - Extremely low map and task variety. Sure we are in Alpha stage, but this is imo something mandatory for any tactical shooter. Major updates do add new elements, but a randomization in objectives should be in order very soon if the title hopes to survive. You play the same map five times, you get bored, you move to other titles. This is not ideal. - Braindead AI, they won't coordinate to flank or pose a real threat. They will usually wait in corners for you and rush once your position is compromised. They don't aimbot (thankfully), but they end up spraying an insane amount of bullets towards your general direction. - Multiplayer is pretty much a must here. Soloing a mission is "possible", but not recommended, especially on higher tiers. Also, every aspect of this game is made for multiplayer, so... sorry solo players. - Maps feel bland and deprived of life and details. ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT (For devs that read reviews) - Better arm animations, the twisted wrist hurts my heart - Better details on maps such as the neighborhood, that feels completely artificial. - AI pathfinding needs improvement, NPCs are too easy to lure and smoke. - AI teammates for simulation mode. Official operations should stay purely MP for the sake of realism. - Variety, variety, variety and random objectives! As I said, if you wish to support a good project, get this. Otherwise, let it cook.
