July 2025
I don’t care what anyone says β€” Outlast isn’t a game. It’s a psychological torture device disguised as entertainment. You don’t play Outlast. You survive Outlast. Barely. And even that’s pushing it. I fired this shit up thinking I was some kind of horror game veteran. You know, big balls, no flashlight needed, full volume. Ten minutes in, I was hiding in a fucking locker, whispering to myself like a prisoner of war. That camcorder night vision? Yeah, that’s not a cool mechanic β€” it’s a panic-inducing β€œhow much battery do I have before I die” simulator. I ran out of batteries and nearly cried. This game is in a league of its own. It doesn’t hold your hand. It slaps it, dislocates your shoulder, and throws you headfirst into a psychiatric hellhole full of naked dudes trying to murder you with rebar. Every single sound β€” a door creaking, a pipe hissing β€” felt like Satan breathing on my neck. And the chase scenes? Bro. BRO. When you hear that music kick in and some half-dead lunatic starts sprinting after you like a police officer chasing a black guy? I alt-F4’d so fast I nearly broke my keyboard. I had to refund it. Not because it was bad β€” it’s TOO good. My fight-or-flight response is permanently stuck on flight. Do I recommend it? Fuck yes. Just not to me. Or anyone with a functioning nervous system.

There are two things I am scared of. Getting chased. And getting raped. This game managed to check both those fuckass boxes. Why the fuck do the twins not have underwear on? I'm not trying to play duck or fuck simulator. I am also afraid of a few other things. Not being able to fucking see, not being able to fucking open doors, not being able to fucking hide, running out of fucking batteries. And a few other scary things. This game perfectly manages to add all of these aspects without balancing them at all. 10/10 Will never play again.

In Outlast , you’re not the orchestrator of violence like in Manhunt β€”you’re its perpetual victim. This game is a relentless spiral of fear, where survival means running, hiding, and documenting horrors too dark to comprehend. It's some kind of a masterclass in tension, forcing you to confront terror while staying defenselessβ€”your only tools being your camera and your wits. Each step feels like a countdown to something worse, immersing you in a nightmarish cat-and-mouse chase that rarely lets up. But it’s worth noting that Outlast follows predictable patterns, sticking closely to well-worn genre tropes. The scares, while effective, are often telegraphed and play out according to a familiar script. It’s not a groundbreaking experience, but rather a well-crafted piece that knows how to hit the right horror beats. Solidly executed, but far from revolutionary. Play it before bed if life's feeling a little too dull - great experience, I've already tried.
