Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen has surprised me in the best way. This review reflects the game as it is in Early Access, so I’m not judging bugs or unfinished features. I’m talking purely about the feeling it gives — and honestly, it’s the closest thing I’ve felt to playing WoW Classic for the first time. The combat is polished and responsive, the graphics are genuinely nice, and the world feels like it actually respects my time and my brain. It doesn’t hold my hand, but it also doesn’t punish me unfairly. It expects me to pay attention, explore, and learn — and that’s refreshing. And the community… probably the friendliest and most helpful player base I’ve ever met in an MMO. People actually talk, help, group up, and make the world feel alive. If you want a modern MMO that brings back that old-school sense of discovery and adventure, Pantheon is worth keeping an eye on as it grows.

I played over 200 hours and enjoyed most of it but ran into same problem most people ran into. The game is simply far from complete. Not much content after you leave newbie area, a lot of dead ends where there should be something but you cannot go any further. Almost no quests outside of Thronefast, no resources in Eastern plains or much people. Very difficult to solo, exp in solo is utterly slow after 22 or something. Even grouping at 24-25 would take several hours to lvl. Just grind and grind away same content. And now the population on servers is so low you cant find a group so you cannot level.

As of 03/05/2025, this game is Everquest. Other than a new world setting and a nearly useless climbing mechanic, I cannot tell where Everquest stops and Pantheon begins. The classes and races are identical, except where copyright forces them to change. I have only played in two starting areas, Thronefast and Wild's End. Wild's End is Greater Faydark, complete with tree city of Kelethin accessible by the ingenious Wooden Elevator. Thronefast City isn't available yet, but I expect Qeynos. The two regions are separated by a third region (I'll admit I have not visited) named "Eastern Plains (not related in any way to Karana)." You can learn all about these regions, as well as quests, class guides, spell lists and locations, and all other Pantheon related information at Allakha.....oh sorry, my bad....Shalazam.info. The developers are very much of the P99 Elite; believing that anything post-Velious ruined the spirit of EQ. Basically, anything after Luclin that adds to player comfort or convenience is not in the spirit of "real MMORPGs", and is both shunned and excluded. For some bizarre reason, this extends to the use of an in-game map. The devs claim an in-game map causes players to "follow the map" and run from place to place rather than exploring the world and experiencing the game along the way. If players want maps, they should draw them themselves and share them among the community. Why would a world that consists of several races and species capable of literally divining their exact longitude and latitude (/loc - yep still works) not be littered with maps? The new Druid class dropped today. As a class, they are healing and buff support. In addition, Druids possess the ability to port party members to various "rings" across Terminus similar to Wizards. Among their spells is a clever little number called "Spirit Of The Wolf" which (stop me if you've heard this), when cast upon party members, raises their movement speed considerably for 45 minutes. Those of us that have played Everquest in the past will recognize the Pantheon Druid as the class EQ used to call "Druid." If this was just a matter of stealing the EQ model and making something new with it, it wouldn't bother me so much. However, this entire game feels like the developers have started with some of Brad McQuaid's old code that they believe he didn't sell to Sony, and have been spending the last decade trying to replicate enough of the rest from memory so they can say "This Isn't EverQuest. It's Just OG MMORPG Like Our Daddies Used To Play" without running afoul of IP violations. Sadly, there is nothing original on Terminus, and Visionary Realms' commitment to banality stops just short of calling their game "SchmeverQuest". Even the drama is the same. Kill stealing is back. "Train to Zone" is back. Oh, camps, camp stealing, spawn camping, and "nO sUCH tHINGS aS cAMPS lol" are all back. Suspicions of GMs favoring players, favoring guilds, joining guilds as regular players and bragging of their GM status: all back on the menu. MMOs like World Of Warcraft dominated EQ by simply and effectively dealing with these common issues. Some MMOs, like EVE Online, embrace this sort of drama and encourage it. Pantheon just ported Everquest (circa 1998), warts and all, into Terminus. Everything that we've learned and has since been corrected for in the last 27 years is just rolled back like a System Restore, apparently in the name of nostalgia. Even recently, the GMs were accused of favoring a guild by spawning a rare boss and allowing the guild to kill and loot it. The devs immediately went on damage control, explaining that (per secret logs that even the GMs didn't know about) this simply didn't happen and it was all a big misunderstanding. They have since introduced new policies concerning GMs fraternizing with players, as well as a huge update to the terms of their Discord server regarding reporting bugs and whistle-blowing. Versions of this story existed way back in the Verant Interactive days, and it's a very bad look for Pantheon in 2025. I understand this game is not even in beta yet, and a version number of 0.16.89 leaves A LOT of room for improvement. I gave it a Yes vote because I want other old-school EQ players to not be discouraged, and I do not want to be a part of tanking Pantheon's rating before it really has a chance. My hope is that, once they're happy with the amount of Everquest they've recreated, they'll get started on Pantheon and it will be amazing. In the meantime, there is always more Everquest to play.

It's rough but enjoyable. You need to enjoy punishing game-play and no hand holding, I wouldn't play this solo, either plan on socializing and meeting friends or find a buddy to play along side. It's not worth the 40$ asking price alone, however if you factor in that it's free per month until it leaves early access... sort of makes up for it. If could put a fair price on it at it's current state, i would say 15-20$. The games a solid 6 out of 10, enjoy!

As a former Everquest player, I was easily talked into getting this from a buddy. Started playing and couldn't stop. My older boys watched me play a bit, asked some questions about it. I more or less let them know this is a game from my generation and they probably wouldn't like it. After a short time, they got it anyway. I suspected they wouldn't last, this fortnite / rocket league generation has much different expectations of games these days. I couldn't have been more wrong. 50+ hours later both of them can't stop playing. They appreciate the difficulty, consequences, and rewarding feeling of progress for the increased effort required for their time. The 3 of us haven't been into the same game at the same time for a while, but Pantheon definitely had the hook for all of us. Highly recommended. Highly recommend recommending it to others you may not think would enjoy it, also. Looking forward to the completion of this amazing project and hoping to have it around for decades to come.
