After almost 1500 hours, i think it is finally time to say a few words about this game. Peaks of Yore is a physics based first person climbing simulator. It is a very unique take on the "go up" genre that has been gaining in popularity these past few years. You venture into different sceneries while tackling extremely varied peaks, with your (very strong) arms and hands as your main weapons. Controls They are very simple, you interact with your left and right arms with left and right mouse buttons. Space and Ctrl are then used to enhance your momentum as you progress further into the game. Every keybinds are customizable and you can also play the game with a controller if that is your thing. Difficulty This game has a very high skill ceiling but the learning curve is quite smooth, as long as you play maps in order and follow the general game's directions. While Peaks of Yore is suited for all types of skill levels, the different game modes and in-game challenges will give even the best players a run for their money. Story While it is not the game's main focus, you will still interact with a wide range of NPCs that will help shape the general lore and story. Most of the time, they will help you and give you what is needed to progress. Play time Completing the game can take a long time, especially if you want to do the optional content and the DLC. As said previously, you can also unlock different game modes that add to the difficulty and replayability. You can complete the base game in 10 to 15 hours if you quickly grasp the game's mecanics but this can be ramped up to 100+ hours if you invest yourself in completing everything the game has to offer. Graphics and visuals While the game can be a bit demanding for low end specs, the different graphic options can easily help you find a suitable configuration. Visuals are stunning and have a charming vibes to them. I often found myself contemplating the scenery simply to take a screenshot, before resuming my climb. Every map has been thouroughly hand crafted with playability in mind and most of the peaks are also inspired from real locations, mountains or geological formations. This gives a close-to-reality feeling when entering or climbing a peak, especially for the first time. However, because the game is first person, some people suceptible to motion sickness might find it uncomfortable to play for extended periods of time. Community and game support Despite being a solo project, the developper is an active member of the community, especially on Discord, where he listens and follows all the discussions closely. Bug reports and suggestions have always been taken into account. The game has been out for more than a year at the time of writing this review, and uptades/patches have been consistent. New content like the DLC has also been released, allowing long time players to renew their experience. Developpment is on-going and future updates are also planned. Speedrunning Being physics based and very well made, the game is insanely fun to speedrun. There is an in-game timer and a scoreboard to help you keep track of your fastest times. The speedrun community is fairly active and the dev himself encourages people to speedrun the game via in-game challenges for example. Join us in the speedclimbing! Price In the era of 8-12h long AAAs, Peaks of Yore gives you way more content for 1/3 of the price. Nothing else to say. There are obviously more things to say about the game but hopefully this gives you a good idea of what Peaks of Yore is. Whether you're a fan of Mirror's Edge, Titanfall, Jump King, Getting over it or simply enjoy a well crafted movement physic based game, you will definitely enjoy Peaks of Yore. The first person view is a very unique and different experience than the common third person "climbing" games out there. Overall one of the best gaming experience i've had in the past 10 years.

i think this is like if the guy who made Getting Over It was sane and happy. the game does have moments where frustration is possible, but every mistake feels a lot more like learning than "the game didn't think you grabbed that, now start all the way at the bottom". even though it can make you mad, the happiness and fun definitely exceeds the frustration of a fall. i think it's my new favorite game from the charm and the gameplay. even offsale, this game is 100% worth it.

TL;DR: A challenging physics-based adventure similar in vein to Getting Over It but in 3D and better. Satisfying and fluid climbing mechanics with a lot of diversity in technique and equipment. Quite a bit of content with loads of peaks to summit (+ challenges). Will make your palms sweat when doing intense jumps at vertigo-inducing altitudes. A surprisingly hidden gem of a game. The premise is simple: Climb various peaks using your arms and some tools you find along the way. The peaks get higher and harder as you go, but so does your own skill. And they get pretty damn high. The climbing aspect of the game is executed wonderfully. Every "hold" (usually rocks) is basically a pivot which you can cling onto and swing off of. You have 2 really strong and long-ish arms for this, which make it feel fun and even intuitive. It might take some time to get used to, but eventually it just clicks and you'll be able to do some really fluid tricks and jumps. It can get pretty satisfying when you manage to gracefully hop from hold to hold without failing. It's comparable to Getting Over It, where if you fall off of the cliff, you'll have to climb back up all over again. The environmental "safety nets" are sparse, but you have tools like ropes, which you can set anywhere into the cliff along your climb. The ropes hold you securely in case you fall, dangling you from the anchor, which can feel really cool especially when hanging from super tall overhangs. The catch is that they're pretty short and you have a finite amount of them, so there's a strategy of when and where to use them. Moments of safety can quickly turn tense and dangerous as you're forced to let yourself off of a rope to make a jump. There are quite a few locations for you to summit (36 in total I think?). From medium length peaks that gradually introduce you to new mechanics to short but very challenging boulders, but the most emotional journeys are going to be the lengthy advanced mountains, which will take the longest to summit, and the risk of falling and going all the way back is at its highest. These can and will take you quite a long sitting to finish. The look and setting of the game is rather random, but in a good way. It's set in what I assume is 1880's Scotland, and you'll meet some other mountaineer characters that share tips and equipment with you, and occasionally climb alongside you. They're all pretty kind and speak in funny accents, and together make it feel like you're never truly alone. There's not much of a story to the game though, which is fine. You can find collectibles scattered across the map, which are a nice detail and you get to brush the dirt off of them in your quaint little cabin. There's also other more brutal gamemodes you'll unlock as you play. All of these get you achievements, which there are quite a few of. The graphics are nice. They have a retro feel to them with very subtle pixellation (which you can disable) which complement the game's feel. By default, everything is monochrome (that's how people saw the world in the past), but there's a colorful mode for a more conventional experience. The environments are also cool, especially views from the peaks. Overall, I'm really glad I found this game. If it weren't for the section which recommends 3 titles at the bottom of a game's page, I would never know this existed. It's great for those looking for a challenging but fun game where completing every level is an achievement on its own. It can get pretty cathartic. "The climb shows your true character, and the peak frees your soul." I saw AstralSpiff play this, so I decided to give it a try, thinking that if I didn't like it, I'd just refund it, no harm done. But Peaks of Yore is honestly one of my favorite games to have come out in 2024. It introduces mechanics slowly and allows you to get accustomed to using them before adding more to the mix. Movement, once you get the hang of it, feels fluid, and it's fun to swing between holds. You can also unlock different modes as you push through the game; You Fall You Die (YFYD), which does what it says, and Free Solo, YFYD but with no ropes, so if you fall, you have to grab on to something on the way down to not die (or alt-F4, that works too). You also get access to time trials for all mountains, if you're interested in that kinda thing. The mountains are a good mix of challenging and fun, and their designs punish falling while still letting you save yourself if you react quickly. Except for one. Screw you, Elderhorn or whatever your name is. I don't even care enough about you to remember your name properly. I hope that when powerful enough explosives are invented in-game, Elderhorn is blown to smithereens first and used as a quarry. Diagonal climbing on overhangs that jut out so that even if you are able to save yourself, you have to swing underneath in the air just for a chance at not blacking out and being sent to the start. I hate this mountain with a burning passion. Great game otherwise. And no, it's not a rage game. Hyped for the DLC soon.
