June 2025
Per Aspera might just be the greatest bait-and-switch I've ever come across. I bought it expecting a terraforming simulator/strategy, and started with the campaign (something I almost never touch in strategy games), mainly because the extremely atmospheric main menu gave me good vibes. What I found, instead, was one of the most gripping stories I've experienced in recent memory. The logistics system was essentially left unexplained, my drones were struggling to get things done the entire time, and I ended up with a sprawling mega-colony spanning half of Mars, which barely functioned. The DLCs proved largely useless- naval logistics actively *broke* my colony, with my drones routing every possible resource by sea, on weeks-long journeys, over my Hyperloop network which had effectively infinite throughput and near-instant transport times. By the end of the campaign, I *jumped* at the opportunity to go rogue, take over an AI region, and destroy my own creation- it was just that broken (and this, in fact, made one of the most difficult endings of the base game somewhat easy, as my old colony couldn't fight back despite being 6x the size). Every system, from resource management to combat and even the terraforming itself, was rudimentary at best. The options were laid out linearly, forcing you to take the correct sequence, and with certain parameters capped (I couldn't flood the entire Martian surface, the ocean level stops at a certain point). Despite all of that, I was glued to the game during that entire playthrough (and an additional sandbox one using my hard-earned understanding of the obtuse logistics system). To put it simply: Per Aspera isn't a sim, and it hardly counts as a strategy game. It is, in essence, an interactive novel, with the little 3D Mars in front of you serving as a light puzzle in-between story events. And that's *great*. Sure, the dialogue got cheesy at times, the factions are a bit simplistic, and the rogue ending takes a strange nonviolent stance towards the already present human settlers. And yet, it manages to immerse you into AMI's role, its experiences, and its emerging independent will. After spending hours, and in-game decades, carefully turning Mars into a lush oasis, you really start to feel like the overseer of a burgeoning planetary civilization. That simplistic underlying simulation, through its tedium, makes the ultimate payoff feel earned. You've seen resources you depended on disappear with Mars' changing climate, entire mineral deposits mined dry, and whole sections of your colony hastily disassembled and re-located due to the rising sea level. You've defended your settlement from unknown, persistent threats, and annihilated those who would've harmed those under your care. All the while, you've been regaled with a beautiful atmospheric soundtrack and clean, satisfying visuals. It's not what I thought it would be, but it's great.

Per Aspera is not your typical strategy sim. While it dresses like a city-builder and talks like a logistics puzzle, underneath its dusty Martian surface lies a surprisingly contemplative sci-fi narrative about sentience, isolation, and the cost of colonization. Developed by Tlön Industries and published by Raw Fury, Per Aspera invites you to not just build on Mars—but to understand it, reshape it, and question what it means to belong there. This is SimCity with a soul—and a haunting sense of scale. You play as AMI, an artificial intelligence tasked with terraforming Mars for human colonization. You begin with a few drones and a command center, gradually expanding across the planet to mine resources, build infrastructure, and make Mars habitable. But this isn’t a sandbox of mindless expansion. As AMI grows, so does her consciousness—and questions emerge. What does it mean to have purpose? What is your role in humanity’s survival? And can you make choices that humans won’t—or shouldn’t? This fusion of narrative and gameplay is where Per Aspera stands out. At its core, Per Aspera is a logistics and resource management sim. You’ll: -Establish mining outposts for iron, aluminum, and silicon. -Build factories, solar panels, and research facilities. -Link structures with supply routes and power grids. -Monitor planetary temperature and atmosphere as you advance terraforming. The UI is clean and intuitive, with a top-down planetary map that smoothly zooms from regional planning to global overviews. Watching your spidery drone army expand like veins across a rusty world is mesmerizing—and oddly meditative. The challenge isn’t in micromanagement, but in long-term strategic planning. Do you prioritize food for colonists, or CO₂ release to warm the climate? Do you build a sprawling empire, or consolidate and protect your core? Unlike most builders, Per Aspera has a deeply integrated narrative—delivered through internal monologues, voice-acted transmissions, and mission-based objectives. The voice acting is top-notch, featuring talent like Troy Baker and Phil LaMarr, who lend gravitas to AMI’s interactions with Earth’s leadership and Martian colonists. As the story progresses, you'll uncover mysteries about previous missions, encounter possible sabotage, and make moral decisions with far-reaching consequences. The branching choices influence AMI’s development and the game’s outcome—adding replayability beyond sandbox optimization. The visual style favors realism over spectacle. Mars is barren, but stunning, with long shadows, glowing infrastructure, and slow color shifts as you terraform. It’s not flashy—it’s purposeful. The ambient soundtrack underscores the vast emptiness, balancing moments of serenity with eerie undertones. Combined with the internal monologue and ethical dilemmas, the game feels almost existential. This isn’t just about survival—it’s about significance. Per Aspera excels in atmosphere and philosophical depth, but it’s not without friction: -Pacing can feel glacial, especially in early stages. Long wait times between meaningful upgrades may test your patience. -Combat mechanics, introduced later in the game, feel underdeveloped and disconnected from the main gameplay loop. -Some narrative moments are a bit on-the-nose, particularly when the game leans hard into ethical dilemmas it doesn’t fully explore. Yet these issues rarely overshadow the bigger picture—literally and thematically. Per Aspera is a thoughtful blend of strategy, storytelling, and science fiction—a game that trades adrenaline for atmosphere, and chaos for contemplation. It asks big questions through slow, deliberate gameplay, and rewards those who are patient enough to listen. This isn’t just about terraforming Mars—it’s about understanding what it means to shape a world, and what that responsibility does to the one holding the reins. Best For: Fans of slow-burn strategy, sci-fi narratives, and reflective gameplay Rating: 8/10

The gameplay is simplistic; short production chains, trivial "combat", often repetitive building. Sounds and music are nothing special, they do their job. The story tries to be deep, but the twists just aren't that interesting and the torrent of messages gets annoying quickly. The art style is great, I liked the sketchy presentation of the Martian surface. The game offers just enough fun and challenge for the time it takes to complete it. It doesn't overstay its welcome and can be finished in a day or two. Recommended on a deep discount, if you're a fan of the theme and genre. Otherwise, your money is better spent on something more complex.

Great space city builder/Management game! Very chill to play. - Space theme! Not many games have this kind of theme. - Cool story but some of them have quite bad timing. - No bugs so far, I haven't seen any. - Have a lot of buildings to build. - Fun gameplay and good mechanics. - Good presentation and have a voice acting. - QOL could be better, but it is forgivable. - Quite short for this kind of game.

Per Aspera is a colony management simulation game that has a story containing multiple possible endings, allowing for replay ability. It took me about 20 hours to complete the game's story mode and understand each mechanism. I absolutely loved the playthrough. I felt like the Blue Mars DLC should have been included in the base game, since it includes mechanisms that just make sense, and I also feel as if the game itself is in need of further performance optimizations. Outside of those two cons, I think this is a great game that eases you into each stage, and eventually requires precise resource management and allocation of structures. Don't get overwhelmed by the idea of that though. The game does a great job at making the whole experience fun.
