The only reason you would want to play Portable nowadays is if you either cannot currently play Reload for one reason or another, or you want to experience the female protagonist route. This is a very stripped back version of Persona 3, originally meant for the PlayStation Portable (P3P on the PSP, how cute). The presentation is limited to mostly visual novel style of storytelling. This honestly does work for Persona, since these games are 33% VN anyways. but this will limit the emotional impact if you choose this as your first P3 story experience. I do personally actually like the point and click exploration during the life-sim section, because it lets you quickly scroll through each location. As someone who tends to look for any changes on every single Persona day, this was fantastic. Overall, P3P is a pretty smart "demake" for handhelds. As for feMC, the limited presentation allowed Atlus to sneak in a decently different version of the original campaign. Lack of animated cutscenes and 3D world exploration made it easy to provide a new look, sound and feel for feMC's route without breaking Atlus' bank. The new protagonist has a great character design, new color scheme for the UI, new songs, slightly rewritten script and, most importantly, new social links. FeMC has a couple of completely new characters to build bonds with and can actually form bonds with the male party members, something which the male protagonist did not have. The social link schedule is slightly reshuffled and has more night time SLs. In summary, the feMC route is not just a good option for people who'd like to play Persona as a female character, it's also a good reason to replay the game and experience it in a new way.

After playing Persona 3 Reload, P3 has become my favorite Persona, so I really wanted to play the FeMC route. While it was disappointing to hear that P3R wouldn't add the FeMC, I still enjoyed experiencing it through P3P. While this game is a pretty janky port, I highly recommend playing this, especially with mods. The mods I played with and would recommend: -Kotone Cutscene Project -P3F Model Port Project -P3P QOL Collection -High Quality Music Pack - Portable PC Edition -Kotone UI Overhaul -Colourful Cut-Ins -Colourful AOA Cut-Ins -HD Cleaned up Bustups -Confident Akihiko AOA

I love Persona 3, but somehow Portable feels even more clunky than the original P3. Maybe that’s how P3P is meant to be (I only played ~10 hours of it seven years or so ago) but there’s still other glaring issues that ATLUS could have easily fixed in this port that they chose not to. The BGs don’t look that good, thanks to the AI upscaling. It’s pretty obvious. I’m not entirely sure if the sprites were upscaled too, but some of them look a little strange and different than I remember. Also the sound effects, oh my god. Modern sound effects should NOT sound as crunchy as Sonic Chronicle’s OST, a Nintendo DS game from 2008. The sound effects sound like they’re going through a blender and getting absolutely destroyed. I can’t believe the sound effects were just knowingly left in this state. And now that ATLUS doesn’t have the limitation of having the game run on the PSP, they could have easily added the video cutscenes, but they just didn’t, for some reason? Now that Persona 3 Reload is out, despite not playing it myself yet, it’s the best game to recommend to someone who hasn’t played P3 yet or Persona in general really. I think someone going from P5R to P3P would really put them off. Hell, even going from P4G to P3P is hard in itself because of some of the mechanics in P3P (curse you tired debuff). I would only recommend playing P3P if you either: a) Have already played OG, FES, P3R, etc and want to play this for fun. Or b) Want to experience the FeMC route. There are better ways to experience P3, and it ain’t here.
