Feb. 2026
This has been on my wishlist for a long time. The reviews kept me from buying it until recently, and I went in expecting a mediocre experience. It's actually on the better side. The game clearly had a lot of talent behind it, and while it's lacking polish in some areas, it comes together competently. The gunplay is good. The arsenal is sizeable, but there's too much overlap in how the weapons function. I rarely felt compelled to use most of them. I played through using mostly the pump shotgun and the Loverboy, with the occasional Microstinger or Bowling Bomb. I only switched to others just to change things up. Not being able to bind keys to individual weapons was also really bothersome. The story is nothing special, pretty bland even for throwback shooter standards, and certainly not on the level of some of its inspirations like Half-Life. What it lacks in narrative design it does make up for some in level design. It serves up varied locations and set-pieces that keep things interesting, and the small vehicle sections here and there were a neat way to switch up the pace without overstaying their welcome. I was pleasantly surprised by the movement. It's no Quake or Tribes, but it's satisfying to slide around. You're able to do some cool traversal by crouch sliding into a jump, and it felt pretty good both in and out of combat. The punch ability propelling you forward also reminded me of the air stab in Wrath: Aeon of Ruin. The bossfights were just okay, slide around while dumping explosives into them for 30 seconds, their models were pretty cool though. I personally didn't encounter many notable bugs. Aside from getting stuck in geometry when messing around trying to climb out of bounds/on top of map geometry, and some enemies occasionally getting stuck in a passive state, the experience was smooth. Performance was overall fine. It ran smoothly at my frame cap for most of the game, but in a couple of spots it would drop significantly for no apparent reason. At one point late in the game, any physics object moving would cause crazy lag, which then fixed itself just as abruptly and never happened again. It's not as good as Ion Fury, but few games are. It's worth playing if it looks interesting to you.

I don't really get the hate for this game, it does everything it says on the box. Sure, it doesn't *excel* in any particular area, but it still more than manages to deliver some good boomer shooty fun. Don't go in with super high expectations and you'll be sufficiently entertained.

Phantom Fury is example why release now, fix later model is huge gamble. Released in poor technical state, trashed (maybe a bit too much) by reviewers on youtube, as result of cold reception sales were abysmal. Without money, game support were cut short after a month, leaving game forever unpolished. Sure, No Man Sky developers managed to turn things around but people forgetting how big sales of that game were, 200k people on launch on steam alone, if NMS had 381 peak concurrent players at launch, Hello Games wouldve have no money to keep working on updates. What Slipgate were thinking??? Especially, after same exact thing happened with Bombshell and Graven... it's miracle they didn't filed for bankruptcy yet with rushed releases like that. So why positive review? Well, even with bugs and occasional fps drops Phantom Fury is... kinda awesome. Varied gameplay, cool locations many of which heavily inspired by classics like Half-Life, Halo, Duke Nukem, atmospheric soundtrack, baddie protagonist, tons of references to other games and pop culture. I had more fun here than in some glazed boomer shooters.

Cool game, cool mechanics, but often it's unclear where to go.

You've already seen that this is a positive review, so I'll waste no time in getting to the point. Phantom Fury is a thoroughly imperfect game, and I'm not here to convince you otherwise. Levels can be confusing to navigate. Enemy encounters can feel poorly designed. Weapons can feel underwhelming, or even borderline unfinished. The combat loop can rely too heavily on "rush the player" type enemies and "small and annoying to shoot" type enemies. While the game can fall short in these areas, it often excels in others. The visual design is bold and vivid, with environments that are moody and packed with detail. The player's arsenal is extremely generous, with many weapons being fun to use and effective in combat. The road-trip story takes you to a vast and varied range of locations across a meaty 8 to 10 hour campaign. All of this is to say that while the game is absolutely uneven, it's far from the disaster that some would have you believe. I went in with low expectations and came away feeling good about the experience, if a little melancholy at the thought of what might've been with a little more time and attention. In any case, don't let people make your mind up for you on this one. Wait until the price feels right, and then play it for yourself. You might be surprised.
