Nov. 2024
After reading some of the recent negative reviews, I feel the need to defend this addicting little game that I love. I'm a 35/F and really wasn't attracted to the art style of Rack and Slay and I can't play pool in real life, but this concept tickled my brain in the sweet spot. Rack and Slay slaps so incredibly hard. Most people's complaints in the reviews can be remedied by getting familiar with all the randomly rolled items you choose at the beginning of each level, and "getting good"- sorry not sorry. It took me almost 2 hours of playtime to get through my first 5 level dungeon. But I kept coming back for more each time I failed because each level is different and I kept encountering new obstacles and enemies. Gameplay is you shoot enemy balls into traps, spikes, bombs, and normal billiard style holes as you crawl though a 5-10+ level dungeon, all while perfecting your preferred style of play with specialized items granting you things like +% shooting power, +% trajectory visibility, extra health, coins, immunity to traps, etc. There's like 10+ types of enemies and they all behave differently during your game. Some will respawn again in a random place if they're not the last enemy to go down, some will blind you for your next turn, some will shoot themselves or a small cue ball directly at you after each turn. These factors make the game really fun because it presents each level like a puzzle with multiple ways to "solve it", but of course there's a few "best" ways too. Each item and enemy has a description always available if you hover your mouse over them, extra helpful for strategically planning your moves. I find myself sitting at the beginning of each level figuring out which enemy is gonna cause me trouble and what's the best path that will net me the most points in one turn. There's a ton of difficulty settings and different options for runs, it feels like I could play this cheap little game forever. I find myself tensing up as my cue ball rolls ever so slowly towards doom, cringing as I watch my ball go flying unexpectedly around the room from an accidentally triggered explosion, and muttering "YESSSSS" under my breath when I nail the exact shot I was going for. Shout out to the devs for making this little gem of a game, it's fun af. Edit: After 13.5 hrs I've 100% the game and still intend to play more at a higher difficulty. 10/10 The best $5 I spent on Steam this year.

delightful little game. haven't played a billiards roguelike before. fun abilities, runs are pretty short. no plot or story here, if that's what you're looking for. just solid mechanics in a nice package at a great price.

"Real world thing but we pasted on a Roguelike" is the hotness right now. Balatro did it for Poker, Luck Be A Landlord did it for a slot machine, Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers did it for blackjack, Peglin did it for pachinko. Now comes Rack & Slay, which does it for pool/billiards. And it works dang well! It's a shorter run-time than many of it's competitors, but that works in it's favor. Challenge is set fairly easy out of the gate, but a couple hours in I'm hitting challenging difficulties after clearing the easier difficulties - on that note, each run lets you select a 0-20 difficulty level (with the higher levels gated behind successful completions of the easier levels) - I found that the levels available out of the box to be comically easy, but once I hit the mid-teens, it got hard and required me to play smart if I wanted to succeed.

Rack and Slay is a light, low challenge Rogue-Like. It runs smoothly with no glitches. You see everything the game has to offer in a relatively short time frame, but at this price there is nothing to complain about. Some reviewers complain about unreachable targets, but I only experienced this if I didn't plan ahead a shot or two. If you have the skill (there is a slight learning curve) then even the highest levels are beatable. The challenge is moderate at most.

A Billiards rogue-like that is a fascinating surprise. It's also an intriguing, head-scratching combo I haven't seen since maybe Rollers of the Realm. It works though. You have a health bar, a limited amount of shots, and you eliminate enemies by knocking them into holes, or spiking them (a few disappear if you touch them). However many are left when you run out of shots deal damage to you and if you scratch, you take 1 damage. It's been a lot of fun thus far and it's reminded me that though I haven't played Pool in a while irl that I had a tendancy to scratch often. I'm still early in my playtime but I noticed it seems to be a bit more forgiving (at least early on) as it seems easy to heal as long as you don't take too much damage too quickly. I haven't gone beyond level 10 yet so that may change. There seems to be a decent variation in enemy type and thankfully hovering over them shows all their info. It's easy to learn, hard to master, and you can play with just your mouse!
