If there were more review options, this game would get a neutral one. I'm really in two minds about this game. It has fun elements, and I can make it fun for myself, but it is not at all fun by default, and it has many issues, both gameplay-wise and on the technical side. Despite all that, this is still the best game of its kind currently available, and I do recommend playing it if you jive with it. I have to start with the performance issues. As other reviewers mentioned, this game is a RAM and performance hog. Open the timetable editor 15 times on a populated map, and your game is eating 12 gigabytes of RAM, while running at 20fps on a very-high-end workstation. If anyone tells you that this is normal, they're lying. Add to that the "route calculation" on some of the bigger maps taking 20+ minutes, and you got yourself a performance hog only some AAA titles can match. There's obvious performance issues here that go unfixed, whatever the reasons are for that. But that does not make the issues go away, and I have to restart the game every hour or so to mitigate this. Add to that the UI/UX clunkiness and occasional glitches, and you got yourself a not-so-pleasant game experience. Sometimes right-click closes a window, sometimes it doesn't. Even games designed for a controller have a more logical button layout for things. I have to say that the UI is much better than it was in Early Access, but it's still pretty inconsistent, and it is still not really a good UI. Now onto the gameplay . I played many train routing games in my time. Think something like PC-Rail or SimRail. A well-designed Timetable scenario can replicate that feeling pretty well. It's less flexible with its signaling, and it's missing some of the intricacies of real-world train control systems, but it's a fun experience regardless. I can wholeheartedly recommend playing the big maps like Amsterdam or Dresden. Endless mode is nothing like that. I expected a game mode where I have some demands put in front of me, and I have to design a timetable or a railway system to handle that. Instead, what Endless mode is (in its current state) is a thinly veiled automation challenge. Once you have your station automation set up, there's nothing, really, that stops you from scaling to a ridiculous level. And because you're relying so heavily on automation, the routing element that was fun in Timetable mode is completely absent. Fun in its own right, but it isn't really a good fit for this game I think. This Endless mode gameplay loop has a big ol' pile of gameplay issues . As other reviewers noted, under the current system, the single most efficient way to play the game is: pick two stations, and run a train between them, every minute. Do not care about all the warnings about train spacings or whatever, it doesn't matter. Do this with 5 pairs of stations, and you have infinite money with all the stars achieved, and every research unlocked. This sucks. This needs fixing. Happy Passengers kind of tries to fix that, but it only adds point-to-point demands, and does not add any throughput demands. A good start, but not enough. The fact that this kind of essential gameplay incentive is locked behind DLC is criminal and would be worthy of a "Not recommended" on its own. The uni-directional trains are very limiting. I remember the times before we had Coach Yard automation, where you had to automate a wye by hand. The current system only replaced the wye with a siding. They're not good gameplay in their current state. Add to that that (at least in UK and western EU) everyone and their railways are using either EMU or push-pull passenger trains, and you got yourself some pretty arbitrary limits that do not feel good to play. My very first mod for the game was called "EMU Simulator" which made every train bidirectional. This should really be the default, or at least a checkbox. And, as an added bonus, with the Scheduler Office, you can skip the challenge of uni-directional trains entirely, by just making every train dual-ended, at no extra cost besides like a 20% paycut. The Scheduler office in its current state invalidates the entire contract system, at the cost of having to design every contract yourself (so the only downside is wasted time). The only reason there's any fun in Endless mode at all, for me at least, is because I'm giving myself artificial restrictions. Make perfect transfers, have a 15-minute feeder service into a main station, keep a certain line at 80kph, take every incoming freight contract, so on. I should not have to find out how to make a game fun for myself. The game should just present incentives that are fun and challenging by default. Despite all that, Endless mode is still the best "Timetable simulator" that's currently on the market, and when you get your own restrictions right, it's pretty satisfying. For Timetable mode, if you're looking for a more arcade-y version of PC-Rail, you're in the right place for that. Rush hour mode is the optimal playstyle of Endless mode taken to its logical extreme. I can see the fun in it, but it's just irritating to play for me. I did not spend much time on it. I don't see the point of the story element. While it's probably nicely made, it's not meant to be part of this type of game. Never touched it, but it can add some flavor to the game for the right person. So overall there's a good base for a game in here, and some aspects (esp. Timetable mode) are pretty good. That is enough to deserve the title of the best train routing game on the market. But there's a Lot to improve. Weak recommend. Oh, and if you're of the sort who boycotts AI, the newest project "in development" on the dev's website is a word-salad LLM wrapper. Do what you will with this information.

Do I know anything about trains?...no. Do I love this game?...Like you would not believe! I hesitated so many times about buying this and I never should have. My appeal was the planning, designing and managing tasks that I hoped the game required and I was not wrong. But little did I expect to love this game as much as I do! It is so well designed, coded, built, thought about, all of these things and more. After only a few days I have already put in 36 hours of game play, that I did not expect, but I can't leave it alone. i have only used Endless mode so far, focusing on the Birmingham map. Probably the easiest map, but yet is satisfying my need to be a perfectionist, artist, programmer, designer and manager all in one! I have learned a thing or two about trains along the ride so far too, thoroughly enjoying the freight trains and trying to find them an uninterupted allocated route for them to follow. Usually just like with Tropico games and Sim City, I have to restart maps over and over again because I get playing and think of a better way of starting out, never progressing. But with this game, the useful fact of getting your 100% money back when selling sensors, signals and alike and ability to delete whole sections whilst pausing and not have any catastrophic effect on your game means I keep playing the same map, redesigning, building and improving the network without restarting. It's so refreshing that i'm in dream land! I haven't even got into shunting yet (and no, that is not some unusual way of walking or barging past people) but supposedly a way of organising trains that are sitting pretty until their next leg of the journey. This looks a bit tricky to set up, but I can't wait to try. Just for info, in endless mode I have found I enjoy starting with unlimited money and opening up all the level ups from scratch, (thank you for this sandbox style option), my favourite way of starting games because I build up the map until i'm happy with the automation and get some decent money and contracts coming in and then I only buy what i can afford when I have get out the red. I can't wait to start on the other maps to see how my designs differ from the start, as I learn more my planning and designing seems to change. I was also so impressed that you can create your own maps, very own stations and platforms. I haven't even ventured into this yet, but omg, with this option I have no idea how many hours I am going to rack up on this game. If I had to find any negative I would say that at the moment I can only think of one, the DLC. I'm not fully invested in the people happiness thing but perhaps it's because it's not really suited to the endless game mode i'm playing, this i'm not really sure but all I can say is that I haven't found the DLC very interesting yet. The year hasn't ended yet, but I can safely say this is my game find of the year. I have tried many and they are not living up to scratch. This game certainly isn't simple, but then again, it can be if you want it to be, it can be as complicated or simple as you make it. It can be as relaxing or stressful as you make it. It can be as fast or slow as you make it. The choices really are yours and it's options like this that make the game so appealing. I fully recommend this game if any of the above appeals to you. I have to say, I find myself now wanting to visit a few train stations, preferably via helicopter from above so that I can get some ideas on track layouts! I have even started googling about the difference between different trains. Something I never thought I would do. Who knew!

this game is basically a waste of money or the best purchase ever, depending on your skill and understanding of the game. 6 months ago, i got overwhelmed past dejvice-bubny contracts in prague and gave up on the game entirely. But i decided to give this game another try and it's so much more relaxing for me now. It's basically a pain first, reward later type of strategy game. you go through the painstaking process of manual signalling to have enough money for automation for commuter trains. Then unlock new upgrades, and repeat the process with red trains. tbh idk how to explain it.

+ generally - only dislike is the scheduler, which is one of the most horrible design decisions ppl could have done. for eaxmple, imagine you have stations A, B, C in a line (A---B---C) and next to B is a tunnel (longer than B station) which would allow trains to to from A to C directly without passing through B station. because the tunnel section is longer than the station itself, the scheduler forces your trains to "pass" through B and there is no way to disable that feature - aside from deleting any tracks leading to B (so the only choice from A to C is actually taking the tunnel) and after the schedule is set, build the tracks to B again. and you need to do that for every single train which is going from A to C directly. (and if you think you can just take the scheduler scheduling through B and ignore the "pass through B" when setting the trains routes - bad idea, because the train will not stop at C because it had not passed through B prior) this problem has also been reported to the devs numerous times, is around for many many months already and isn't going to be fixed. if you dislike annoyances like that, don't buy the game(!) if you don't care about annoyances like that, check if the game actually suits you
