I leave my recommendation with a few caveats. 1) The game explains little outside of it's own story and clearly expects familiarity with the franchise. I highly recommend the anime, especially the OVA, as it holds up pretty well honestly. I think one can play the game without the prior context but it certainly helps. 2) The game is pretty short. Even with my constant back and forth across the map every time I got a new skill (instead of saving all the cleanup for just before the end game) and tabbing in and out to check messages the game only took 5 hours. It was a good 5 hours but length is something to consider. 3) The game is pretty easy. Most the time I think I took more damage fumbling through the platforming and running face first into basic enemies than I did from bosses. There's a couple near the late game that did take a couple tries but I realized fairly quickly that certain spells and bits of pattern recognition could trivialize the fights and make them easy to cheese. All that said the game is solid. The story isn't going to blow you away but it's good and, knowing the context of everything, can be a bit of an emotional journey once you realize what is going on. I saw the "reveal" at the end coming from the start but still was able to enjoy the ride. Gameplay is very Symphony of the Night. I swear the run animation for Deedlit is almost 1 for 1 to Alucard's, you have the quick back dash on the bumper, and even the way leveling and stuff like weapons and spirits are approached feels the same. I wouldn't go so far as to say this is quite as tightly tuned as that game but it wears its inspirations on its sleeve and it won't let you down if you're looking for something with that vibe. Despite many of the fights being easy once you know what is going on, some of the boss designs are really solid. There is an early fight against wind and fire jinns that really sold me on the game's elemental swaping mechanics. The final boss was a bit of a ride figuring out the openings and which way to dodge stuff and was a great spectacle of character moments. Apparently there's a weapon you earn for doing the first phase taking no damage and... yeah getting all the weapons might not happen any time soon for me. Granted there'd also likely be a lot of enemy farming for drops and money too to complete that one which I also don't look forward to. I do wish the shop prices for weapons was a bit lower, I only ever bought maybe 3 through the whole game cause usually by the time I could afford a weapon I'd be in the next chapter, with a new shop, with something even more expensive to get (and the weapons I found in the meantime being better than all the old stuff). Would have been nice to be encouraged to try different types of weapons more often. The pixel art is great and the music is pretty good. I really enjoyed this but don't see myself going back for 100% achievements any time soon. Even so it's worth experiencing, especially if you're a fan of the franchise.

Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth is a classic SNES-style metroidvania game set in the Lodoss of War world. We control Deedlit, a High elf who mysteriously appears in the Wonder Labyrinth as she attemps to uncover why she suddenly appeared there as well as why her former companions behave in an odd way. The gameplay itself is fairly simple and the entire game relies on the gimmick of switching between two elements: wind and fire, which could wear off if the game wasn't so short. The enemies, bosses and the very few challenges there are are not very hard either. The game is short, even if you attempt to 100% it shouldn't take more than 9-10 hours, and I mean 100% it, not only get all achievements (Although in this case, they're the one and same). Overall, if you want a somewhat succint, classic, metroidvania experience, this game could be your thing.

This is not like Symphony of the Night. It looks similar and has similar base mechanics but you will not have a nice relaxing time with this one. If you have fast reflexes and enjoy platformers, then this is for you. The main gameplay mechanic is switching between elements on the fly and getting hit will severely reduce your attack power - until you build it up again by hitting enemies with the opposite element. Once again - THIS IS NOT LIKE SYMPHONY OF THE NIGHT. It's a good game that a lot of work clearly went into but it is NOT casual and you WILL have a bad time playing it with half a brain (like me) - good for some, not for others.

A SEVERELY underrated Metroidvania game! It's Symphony of the Night with Ikaruga-style quick mode switching to absorb damage or power up your attacks and heal, keeping the action constant throughout. Even just playing the first 15 minutes gets you right into the good stuff with some of the best abilities to set the stage for you, you can make up your mind about it pretty fast - and you won't be disappointed. Great graphics, amazing anime artwork based on a cult classic anime, very memorable and interesting boss fights. My only gripes are that it's short, and the plot is razor thin, but the plot isn't that important anyway if you just came for the nostalgia and name-dropping anyway.

Short, fun and pretty easy. Didn't have to farm too long for all the enemy weapon drops. Don't have to know anything about Record of Lodoss War to enjoy, just gives a little bit more context to who all these people are. The merchant weapons are all pretty useless, cuz you find better weapons all over the map anyways, just had to buy them for the achievement. Invisibility makes some boss fights hilariously trivial,
