April 2026
The Good: Beautiful Vanillaware-style artwork, strong music (especially the opening), and generally solid controls and movement. The Bad: Overloaded visuals—screenshake, damage numbers, and cluttered foregrounds make it hard to see. Chaotic boss fights (worse with NPCs and zoomed-out camera). Excessive dialogue and cutscenes, with inconsistent translation and messy text formatting. The Ugly: Intrusive and unnecessary “tips,” and overly complicated controls relying on button + stick inputs when a simpler control scheme could've sufficed and lessened the bloat. Final Verdict: Stylish presentation and great music can’t fully carry a cluttered, chaotic experience weighed down by poor readability and design frustrations, but overall this game delivers an emotional action packed gripping experience.

Heroine Anthem Zero 2: Scalescars Oath, developed by WindThunder Studio and published by Skywalker HK, is a side-scrolling action RPG that places narrative and atmosphere at the forefront of its design, often prioritizing emotional storytelling over mechanical precision. It exists in a space that blends visual novel sensibilities with exploratory platforming and light combat, creating an experience that feels as much like an interactive drama as it does a traditional game. Set in a world shaped by divine catastrophe and cultural mythology, it builds a layered setting that draws from East Asian influences while weaving in themes of faith, survival, and identity. The story follows Shama, a young priestess burdened by her past, as she journeys through a fractured world in search of purpose and understanding. The narrative unfolds gradually through extensive dialogue, character interactions, and illustrated scenes that give it the structure of a serialized tale rather than a tightly paced adventure. It is dense and often introspective, focusing on emotional nuance and philosophical undertones rather than constant forward momentum. At its best, the writing delivers moments of genuine resonance, exploring the weight of loss and the complexity of belief in a way that feels personal and reflective. However, the sheer volume of dialogue and uneven pacing can also slow the experience considerably, with certain sections feeling overly prolonged or lacking focus, particularly when translation inconsistencies affect clarity. Gameplay is built around a 2D side-scrolling format that combines exploration, platforming, and combat. Movement through environments is generally smooth, and the game encourages players to search for hidden paths, resources, and optional encounters. Systems such as crafting, cooking, and equipment upgrades provide a sense of progression, allowing players to gradually strengthen Shama and adapt to different challenges. These elements add depth to the experience, especially for those who enjoy methodical exploration and incremental growth, though they are not always fully integrated into the broader design. Combat functions as a real-time system with basic attacks, evasive maneuvers, and unlockable abilities that expand the player’s options over time. While it offers moments of engagement, it lacks the responsiveness and refinement needed to feel consistently satisfying. Encounters can vary in quality, with some feeling straightforward and others becoming frustrating due to balancing issues or enemy behavior. Boss fights attempt to introduce variety, but they do not always leave a strong impression, and over time combat begins to feel secondary to the narrative rather than a core pillar of the experience. One of the game’s most notable strengths lies in its presentation. The visual design combines detailed character artwork with layered environments, creating a world that feels rich and expressive despite its side-scrolling structure. The large number of illustrated scenes helps bring the story to life, reinforcing its emotional tone and giving key moments a sense of impact. The soundtrack further enhances this atmosphere, offering a wide range of compositions that support both quiet, reflective scenes and more dramatic sequences. Together, these elements create a cohesive audiovisual identity that carries much of the game’s appeal. Despite its strengths, the game is held back by a number of technical and structural issues. Controls can feel imprecise at times, and occasional bugs or inconsistencies disrupt the flow of gameplay. Interface design and translation quality also contribute to a sense of roughness, making certain systems less intuitive than they should be. Additionally, the game’s pacing can be uneven, with long stretches of dialogue or slower exploration that may test the patience of players expecting a more dynamic experience. The overall structure offers a substantial amount of content, including multiple stages, optional activities, and branching dialogue choices that can influence certain outcomes. This gives the game a sense of scale and encourages exploration, but it also highlights the uneven integration of its systems. Some mechanics feel underdeveloped or disconnected from the core experience, creating moments where the game struggles to maintain cohesion between its narrative and gameplay elements. In the end, Heroine Anthem Zero 2: Scalescars Oath is a game defined by its ambition and emotional focus. It delivers a richly detailed world and a story that aims for depth and introspection, supported by strong artistic presentation. However, its uneven pacing, inconsistent combat, and technical shortcomings prevent it from fully realizing its potential. For players who value narrative-driven experiences and are willing to overlook its flaws, it offers a unique and often moving journey. For those seeking polished mechanics and tightly structured gameplay, it may feel inconsistent and occasionally frustrating. Rating: 7/10

Recently found I had left a finished game of mine unreviewed that I meant to review, and loh and behold I did the same thing with Heroine Anthem Zero 2. While I enjoyed the first experience as a delightful little surprise of a VN/Side Scrolling Action/Metroidvania light (capitalize that L while you're at), the 2nd absolutely blew me away. While still very much the same as the first, but triple in size, scale, game play improvements, and amount of content. I just today booted up the game to catch a event I recently learned about (more on those in a bit) I decided to boot up a save from the beginning, because holy moly, from the visuals to the OST at work, the opening to this game is jaw dropping. The art, Vanilla Ware levels of breath taking, and the music so beautifully haunting it captures you as much as the disturbing, yet atheral visuals your eyes are looking at. What a way to start the player off, especially off the back of the prequel title. Honestly this review would be way too long if I gushed over everything I loved about this game, and there are some critiques here and there, more so on the gameplay. While a big improvement over the last, due to the length of the game and the VERY low difficulty, combat can become rather teduis in the long run. The last thing I wanted to touch up on was the aftormentioned event I had missed. Boy howdy this game has an unreal level of fully fleshed out side events that are completley (and very easily missed) side events. While I respect the VERY early PS1 and earlier era JRPG approach to these side events/side quests, in how as long as you're chatting with all the npc's, you'll see most of them without a hitch. However, due to there not being a chapter select, and how very missable many of those quests are, I also have dock some points for that as well haha. If it wasn't for me diving through the discussion boards (only the ones that were in Chinese ( I assume Chinese based on what Google was telling me, deeply sorry if the language I'm assuming is incorrect) and found a super obscure, mid to late 2000's looking message board (again assuming it was Chinese) with a written guide for most/ all of the events and how to get them, I would have missed much more. If you'd like to find this post, it's in there haha. Wish ya luck. And I know for a fact there's still events I have missed from the different screens. posted in the community hub hahaha. Again huge respect for the ambition, but man it's difficult to find most of it all solo. Especially a shame because the art of this game is just so phenomenal. Very rarely to I feel yucky about not being all to see everything a game has to offer. To wrap this all up, if you're into Visual Novels, and VN's that gamify the experience, I think you'll really find something special here. Characters are great, lovable, fun, with surprising amount of depth to especially the protagonist. The world building is magical, and the story at whole is extremely intriguing. Love the blend of Nordic Mythology and symbolism mixed with some tradional modern Japanese/Anime tropes and story beats. I hope from the bottom of my heart the development for the 3rd game is at least happening, and if so everything is going smoothly. While very much a hidden gem in all meaning possible, it'd be real shame to not see the story of Shama and this world not conclude properly. Cheers to Windthunder Studio and what they've created here. Also I'm still holding out hope for a artbook release for Zero 2 here!

I recommend this one with some caveats. It is far far better than the previous game and there's enough backstory that you don't need to play that extremely rough prequel, which seems like an early beta demo by comparison. The English text needs a lot more proofreading, but it's not to the point that the ability to understand what is going on is hindered. This is an action RPG with metroidvania elements and will keep you occupied a good while. The cutscenes are many and can be lengthy, but the story moves along at a good pace. Speaking of the story, it feels like they were intending to lay groundwork for a sequel, which, as of the time this review is posted, does not exist yet as far as I know. It doesn't end on a cliffhanger like the previous game did, but there are definitely a lot of unanswered questions, like the end of Empire Strikes Back and the like.
