Good remaster for a game. Won't blow your socks off, but has little extras that differentiate it from other old school FPS.

For this release and edition, this may be about as perfect of a remaster as you can get. Bundle in all the extra episodes, include a level editor, add back in cut content from the game's original development, make a whole new episode: they did everything a fan could possibly want. They even added options for new sfx, hud options, and the option to use the soundtrack from the 2013 remake. Genuinely they ticked every box on how to do an awesome remaster. As for the game itself, its a very "you either love it or you hate it" type game. It's a relic of its era, but maaaan does that make it so charming. This game is so insanely interesting, from the fact Apogee found ways to make the Wolf3D engine do things that even Doom couldn't do at the time while still showing traits of its age to the amazing original soundtrack to the sometimes frustrating mazelike level designs that tended to plague Wolf3D engine games to the clear passion the small dev team dumped into almost every aspect of the design and presentation. This game is Doom's campier cousin. I freaking adore it, but I totally understand those who don't. Overall, I'm super pumped and pleased. Maybe it's not for everyone, but it sure is for me lol.

Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition is the best way to experience this game. That being said I really don't think you should buy this game unless you are a fan of 90's shooters. There is a reason why this game almost never gets mentioned in the same sentence with the classics like Blood, Duke 3D, Quake, Doom, Shadow Warrior, Hexen etc. This game was and is mostly bad. It has some good ideas but they feel unrealized, In this review I will try to break down why this game is a black sheep of 90's shooters. It is not all negative, the game has 3 chapters + one new added for this edition. 1st chapter - The Hunt Begins is a solid chapter and serves like a good intro for the rest of the game. Solid level design, shorter than other chapters but overall good. 2nd chapter - Dark War is just awful. Bad levels design, Really, some of the worst levels in any shooter. Even if you use the map it is still confusing and not in a good way. Skip this chapter. 3rd chapter - Extreme Rott is one of the best chapters in any 90's shooter. Great level design, really good stuff. 4th chapter - The Hunt Continues is almost a carbon copy of Dark War, awful levels. You can skip this one also. This is a simple break down of this game but it is clear that the Extreme Rott sticks out like a sore thumb. The whole game is a mess, it feels like this game was made by 4 teams. The shooting is just ok, you have standard weapons - pistol, double pistols, machine gun and heavy weapons (many of them but you can use only one) This game has a 4 weapon slots 2 for pistol and double pistols, 1 slot for machine gun and 1 slot for heavy weapons like rocket launcher, flame thrower etc. Pistols and machine gun gave unlimited ammo, heavy weapons have limited ammo. You will not need pistols because they are useless. You will however use your machine gun and heavy weapons. Another weird decision, why would anyone design a game with 2 useless weapon slots is beyond me. Heavy weapons feel great to use and there are some really great ones like, some kind of a mix between flame thrower and rocket launcher. This weapon is in fact my fav in this game, it can melt crowds of enemies in a single shot and the sound effect when they melt if pure art :) There is a baseball bat that shoots rockets, cool weapon but the charge time makes it almost useless. There are some funny powers you can use for a limited time. God mode is exactly what it says but the sound effect is one again pure art :) . You can also turn into a dog and reach some secret areas and slaughter enemies, fun and well implemented idea. You can also fly and reach some areas much faster. Other powers are just bonkers, you can turn into a bouncy ball, drunk mode etc. none of them are of any use, they are just there to make fun of you :) Conclusion - limited weapon slots ruin most of the game. Some great weapons but the shooting feels mostly boring, The problem is that in the majority of the game you get little heavy weapons and when you do get them you have only ONE slot. Enemies are standard, grunts that die easily, heavy enemies who are bullet sponges, robots and bosses. I played all the chapters on hard and the amount of bullets you must use to put down a brute soldier is unreal. It can be funny at first but gets annoying after a while. Robots and enemies with rocket launchers can one hit kill you. Bosses are ok but some get re used too much. You can't jump nor crouch. Jump is replaced by jump pads and platforms. These are used mostly to collect lives. Another useless idea, why would anyone care about these lives when you can save and quicksave. There are also traps and most of them are ok but some can be very annoying because they can kill you in seconds and you can't determine exactly where you are standing. Secret areas are ok, you also have secret levels but they are very hard to get to if you are not looking at the map. The music is great but not the new stuff, the old music is great and sound design is solid. If this review is confusing you than playing this game will be a much worse experience :) I haven't even mentioned some stuff. I like this game, Extreme Rott is one of the best chapters ever, with some master class level design. I would say that this game is worth playing just for this chapter. Just skip Dark War and The Hunt Continues because they are extra long and have awful level design. This game is a mess in every way but there is much more to like than to dislike. I can recommend this game but at a discount.

As a remake, this is solid. It plays the same as I remember from 25-ish years ago, but on modern hardware and some modern QoL. There's basic stuff like proper mouse look, auto-run, and crosshairs, but also configurable options to do stuff like reduce some enemy health. The gameplay altering ones can be turned off. As a game, it's a bit on the weird side. At its best you're running through expansive maps blasting enemies into chunks with a wide variety of explosive weapons. At its worst you're holding down left click for a damn minute waiting for the triad enforcers to just die already. The really cool weapons all have limited ammo, but the basic pistol and machine pistol have infinite ammo. The problem is that in most situations you can't find enough ammo to explode every enemy, no matter how perfect your aim or how well you ration your shots and backtrack to pick up a bazooka you couldn't hold. The bullet weapons are also massively overpowered - most enemies can be trivially stunlocked, even on the highest difficulty, so you're literally just waiting for things to die. The maps are expansive, filled with weapons and other pickups, there's a huge number of secrets and weird gadgets like jump pads and floating discs. There's a ton of powerups and a lot of varied weapons; from the super basic bazooka to the firebomb to the dark staff. The core has a lot of promise; the actual execution is lacking. Some of this can be attributed to age, but DOOM didn't let you infinitely stunlock any enemy. It's a weird game and absolutely worth checking out, either for the nostalgia or just to see a weird, dated FPS. It's by no means the best thing ever, but I'm pretty sure the developers had a ton of fun making it, and it's certainly fun at times. Plus the music is excellent.

ROTT kinda sucks if we’re being honest. The levels can be cryptic, repetitive, and frustrating. And yet, I couldn't help but have a ton of fun playing this stupid game. Being honest, I think what kept me coming back was how satisfying the soundscape is. The music is TOP tier, extremely memorable, and fun. I can hum a good majority of the songs, and I’ve only played the game for about 12 hours. The audio is so damn crunchy and tactile. I love how bit crushed the sound effects are, it makes pumping lead into enforcers extremely fun to just listen to. The audio becoming deep fried ear rape when you blow too much up at once is the garlic to this games sauce. The fact that you only really have 3 weapons was a turn off at first, but it works for this game. I think using the rocket launchers as “power ups” makes things interesting. There's good risk/reward in deciding what bazooka variants to pick up or keep because you don't necessarily know what tool you'll need for whatever lies ahead. You’re incentivized to experiment with the bazookas, excalibats, dark staffs, etc because you’ll always have infinite ammo for your MP40. You always have something reliable to fall back on. Nightdive did an amazing job with this port, that's a given for the studio. A feature I LOVED was the dedicated swap weapon button. I usually map my D-pad to my weapons to quick swap, but I found that just pressing Y insta swaps me between ol’ reliable and whatever slot 3 weapon I have. It's a small touch you could have mapped on your own, but I'm grateful it's there by default. Praise aside, I stand by my original statement. The game does kinda suck, especially after you fight the NME. From that point forward, it feels like you’re fighting the games ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ more than the damn enemies. There’s too many 90's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ moments to list, so I'll just mention the lack of enemy variety and the final boss. The game suffers from the enemy roster being "guy that shoots you" over and over. The enemy robots were a nice change of pace, but I don't remember them doing anything special or different. The only enemies that stand out are the Enforcers and the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ monks. The enemy variety was already lacking, so when the Monks are introduced in the final episode it should be a breath of fresh air right? NAH. The final episode is all monks. It’s. All. MONKS. There’s maybe 3 or 4 regular dudes and enforcers from what I can remember but I was drained of any motivation to finish the game at this point. The final boss fight against El Oscuro is fun and humorous in concept, but the game punishes you for not finding the secrets with a bad ending. I hate when secrets are necessary to proceed in boomer shooters already, so you know I was fuming when I had to go online to find out how to get the good ending. You know what though? I had enough fun with the games foundation to come back for more, especially with the new levels made by the boys at New Blood and Nightdive.
