I did enjoy playing this cozy game. As a new witch you get plant flowers, make hybrids, make friends, solve the mysteries of portals, and harvest ore. Can it quite repetitive? Yes, especially closer to the end when you need to make hybrids of hybrids for flowers for every story quest plus friendship quest. Did I still complete them all? Yes I did.
This game is amazing! It's the perfect spin on a farming sim. The story is super cute, the writing is well done. The art style is beautiful and unique. I also like how it integrates puzzling/coding principles into the gaming loop. It is a genuinely interesting take on a genre that can feel oversaturated and stale. You can feel and see the care and dedication put into this game. Truly the opposite of cozy game slop.
Considering how popular Sticky Business is, I anticipated quite a lot of reviews for this game. But, to my surprise, there are so few! This game might not be everyone's cup of tea, however, so far this is the kind of tea I want. The ambient sounds and music are relaxing, the artistic style is fun and quite often beautiful, and there's also an interesting dynamic going on with the characters. The storyline wasn't what I was anticipating so I appreciate that quite a lot. Yes, the quests can be repetitive, but it feels no more repetitive than others in this genre or even outside of the genre. Hopefully, I don't eat my words on this one as I'm only ~15 hours in. Let's also not forget how creative the mechanics were farming are. Love me some little minions I can queue up and establish looping actions. Chef's kiss. Overall, I really appreciate the work put into this game and I don't know WHY this game in particular got me emotional, but it did. Thanks Spellgarden for another warm hug manifested into a form of a game.
I wish I could enjoy this game more. I only played a couple hours, but liked the idea of the "coding" and the characters seem whimsical and nice. Definitely on the cozy end of Farming games. Unfortunately, the very vibrant pastel scenery just hurts my eyes. Like, it's just way too bright. And the graphics settings do not include a way for me to deal with that. The second zone is just pink out the wazoo and I cannot continue. Seems like a good game, but I wish they would add a "muted" graphics option or something.
Ritual of Raven is such a unique game that it's hard to compare it to anything else - it has the surface look of a classic cutesy farmy-crafty game but the gameplay loop isn't the same at all, involving enchanting (read: coding) adorable tarot-themed constructs into carrying out your whims. As someone who plays a lot of games, and a lot of cutesy farmy-crafty ones at that, it's been REALLY satisfying to sink my teeth into something a bit different. What really sets it apart for me is the writing: it's cosy, but it's not MINDLESSLY cosy. You're not dropped into a world where everyone adores you for no clear reason: you have to EARN their respect and companionship, which makes it feel all the more meaningful once you have it. It doesn't shy away from or ignore heavy topics either, but nor does it dwell on them: you have the power to improve the world around you, after all, and when the characters are as relatable as they are you really WANT to improve it! It's not perfect - some simple QoL features like being able to bookmark pages would save an awful lot of spam-clicking backwards and forwards, but I can personally overlook some minor ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ for the sake of something so refreshing to play as Ritual of Raven.
