River City girls 2 is one of the very few sequels to pull off what is (apparently) impossible. It gives you more, bigger and better without sacrificing a single thing. That's literally all gamers want from a sequel. Graphic style remains the same and so do the tight controls and excellent feel of the combat. They doubled down on the size of the world, the cameos, the excellent music (which is a whole ass vibe by itself), the side quests, playable characters and convenience features. Easily the best Beat 'em up to be released and an absolute worthy addition to the River City franchise!

Huge thumbs up! Best Double Dragon game since the first arcade one! P.S. I absolutely love it that I can play Billy (or Jimmy), twenty-something year old dudes - and beat the ♥♥♥♥ out of highschoolers so that they drop their lunch money 🤣

I don't usually comment on games, but I have to say that this is probably my favorite couch coop game. The fighting system is satisfying and flexible. They're so much variety, there's lots of ways to tweak the difficulty for players of all skill levels, and the characters, animation, and voice acting are to notch.

River City Girls 2 expands the formula of the first game with an immediate sense of confidence, throwing players back into a chaotic, neon-lit River City that feels bigger, louder, and far more alive. The sequel wastes no time setting its tone: the girls are back, the city is once again in crisis, and the criminal underworld refuses to stay defeated. Instead of a clean victory lap after the events of the first game, Misako and Kyoko find themselves dragged into yet another turf war that quickly spirals into a city-wide brawl. This return to upheaval gives the game a playful, rebellious spirit right from the opening moments, and the story carries a blend of teenage bravado and absurd humor that defines the entire adventure. The addition of new playable characters along with the returning cast also gives the narrative a sense of continuity and escalation, as if the world is expanding alongside the chaos. Where the game truly shines is in its combat, which feels both faithful to classic beat-’em-ups and noticeably more flexible and expressive than before. Each character carries a distinct style, making the roster feel diverse rather than redundant. The sequel introduces new juggling options, expanded combo trees, guard-breaking attacks, and an appealing flow that rewards experimentation. The sense of impact in each punch or kick is amplified by fluid animations and clever enemy design that encourages players to mix mobility, timing, and creativity instead of simply button-mashing. The leveling and upgrade systems return with more depth, allowing players to purchase additional moves, expand basic combos, and tailor characters toward personal playstyles. This level of mechanical growth gives the campaign a steady rhythm of discovery, ensuring that battles remain engaging long after the introduction of the core mechanics. The structure of River City Girls 2 embraces exploration far more than its predecessor. Instead of following a mostly linear route from region to region, the city unfolds into a somewhat open-ended network of districts, each filled with shops, side quests, secrets, and NPC interactions. This sense of openness helps River City feel like a place rather than a series of fighting arenas. You can take detours for extra missions, hunt for hidden items, or simply enjoy the environment’s quirky designs and comedic touches. The option to recruit defeated enemies returns as a useful mechanic, allowing players to summon temporary allies during difficult encounters. While not essential, these recruits add another layer of strategy and help reinforce the game’s chaotic energy by bringing additional wildcards into the fray. Visually and stylistically, the game continues its commitment to expressive pixel art infused with modern sensibilities. Character sprites brim with personality, each movement exaggerated in a way that gives combat an almost animated feel. Environments are vibrant and densely decorated, reflecting the unique personalities and cultures of the districts. Cutscenes alternate between in-engine sequences, crisp anime-inspired stills, and humorous comic panels that reinforce the game’s playful storytelling methods. The soundtrack further elevates the presentation, with energetic electronic tracks, catchy vocal songs, and atmospheric pieces that adapt to the pacing of exploration and combat. Music once again becomes a major component of the game’s identity, matching its energy beat for beat. Despite the improved scale and ambition, River City Girls 2 carries a handful of frustrations that keep it from being uniformly polished. Navigation can be confusing due to the absence of a real-time mini-map, forcing frequent interruptions as players pause and check where they are supposed to go next. The pacing sometimes falters during backtracking segments or in quests that rely on vague clues. Performance-jitters and occasional sluggishness can disrupt the game’s otherwise lively momentum, especially when many enemies crowd the screen. Some reused assets and familiar structural beats may also leave returning players wishing for more striking reinvention rather than incremental refinement. Although new characters join the playable roster, not all of them receive the narrative attention or distinct development that the leading duo enjoys, making parts of the expanded cast feel underutilized. Even with these shortcomings, the game remains an unapologetically energetic experience anchored by charm, personality, and a strong sense of identity. River City Girls 2 understands exactly what it wants to be: a loud, stylish, slightly unhinged beat-’em-up that thrives on attitude as much as mechanics. It embodies the spirit of the Kunio-kun lineage while confidently establishing its own tone, offering a mix of modern flair and retro foundations that manage to coexist without clashing. For players who enjoy co-op brawlers, character-driven humor, or action games built around experimentation and expressive combat, the game delivers a lively and satisfying adventure. It may not reinvent the genre, but it enriches it with flair, heart, and a contagious sense of rebellious fun that captures the spirit of River City at its best. Rating: 8/10

I think I expected another linear Beat 'Em Up and was really pleasantly surprised by this one. I never played the first game, so some things were lost on me, but this was a pretty great free-roaming experience with a ton of characters, gorgeous pixel art, great enemy variety, and a lot of personality. Move combinations feel great and reasonably expressive, and the music is FANTASTIC. The Double Dragon DLC also integrates rather seamlessly, and both characters are a ton of fun. I especially appreciated any time Jimmy was meta about his age and the fact that he doesn't go to high school. The game isn't without its flaws: navigating between screens can be a pain, the map could be improved, only 2 item slots is kind of silly, needs more locations to purchase/unlock moves, some kind of better level-sync between characters would be great (I like to switch characters regularly), and general QOL things could be done to inventory and shops. And also cutting down some of the dialogue as the guests tend to be universally long-winded and slow-speaking. Hurts the pacing a bit. All things that could be improved in a sequel, which I really, really hope is coming. Or, honestly, a game like RC2 focused entirely on Billy and Jimmy Lee. Even with the nitpicks, this is a 5 out of 5 for fans of beat 'em ups.
