Recommendation: 70% The game itself is good. It has plenty of strong moments, excellent cinematic scenes, and does a great job developing its characters and their motivations. Unfortunately, its biggest weakness is the technical state of the game. The Director's Cut is essentially a copy-and-paste of the original release, so all of the original issues are still here, with a few new ones added on top. The original game is over 10 years old, so many of its flaws could be forgiven. This version, however, isn't even a year old. The camera is still awful. It constantly gets caught on objects, refuses to zoom in properly, and if you try to look around while walking, it starts jerking around and makes your character move sideways. Then there's the 480p-looking UI, blurry textures on characters' clothing, a broken localization into my native language, and several other technical problems. I also have some issues with the story. For the most part, I think the writers did a good job, especially considering it's a prequel. However, the narrative peaks around the middle of the game and gradually loses its emotional impact afterward. By the time I reached the ending, it felt flat and emotionally underwhelming. As for Majima's storyline, the further I progressed, the harder it became for me to relate to his motivations. Overall, I can understand why so many people consider this the best game in the series. For many players, it was their first Yakuza game, and the series' unique style is genuinely captivating when you experience it for the first time. That wasn't the case for me, though. This wasn't my first Yakuza game, so I had the newer entries to compare it against. I can still recommend it, especially if you've never played a Yakuza game before and want to start the series from the beginning.
It's... fine? Yakuza 0 Director's Cut really didn't need to exist but it's a serviceable method of playing the game. Red Light Raid is a fun distraction and it's nice to finally have an HD font (even if I prefer the look of the original). Autosaves and saving anywhere is a nice change but it does take away from the experience of running to a telephone booth in order to save a little bit (thus making the bagphone substory guy in Sotenbori redundant). They did actually fix the inventory bug when saving which would temporarily corrupt your inventory, so that's a good change. The new cutscenes are for the most part pretty terrible, I won't go into detail for the sake of spoilers but they range from awful to meh. Overall if there was a choice between playing this or the original, easily the original Yakuza 0, but this version is 95% the same so there's not a huge difference.
