RPG Maker MZ is an incredible toolset, with the capability to create incredible RPG-based games. I've got over 6000 hours on the clock. I've used every pixel of it. Yeah, it's 2D. But that adds to the charm, imho. 3D based games will RINSE you in assets. The interface is simple enough that you can 'pick up and go' almost right away, and as your mind thinks of more creative things to do and you do eventually reach the limitations of the toolset, you can insert script, and write plugins to do the rest. The toolset is build and designed for it. "Do I need to code?" No, not really. JavaScript is pretty easy to pick up and understand visually, though, and can help with advanced stuff. But the majority of what you need is a google away. "Do I need to be capable of making art?" No. But I would advise yes. You can use the stuff that comes with, but your game isn't going to stand out against the thousands of shovel-ware out there. Where it fails: The toolset doesn't. It's the things associated with it. The RPGMaker Forums (english speaking) I've been using the internet since the 90s. I have never come across a more rude, uppity, self-important, post-count-hungry shower of pricks in all of my life. And I've used 4chan, reddit, twitter AND WoW barrens chat. It doesn't matter how much you search. It doesn't matter if your problem has never existed, it doesn't matter how polite and apologetic you are... the residents of the english speaking forum will find a way to belittle you and make you feel like a prick for posting. But... there are free resources there if you can bear it. RPG Maker MZ DLC is recycled MV stuff. Out of ALL of the DLC for RPGMaker MZ, there are only TWO that actually match the packed-in artwork and style. The 8 Wizards, and the Dark Fantasy. Other tilesets/portraits/art are either MV tailored, or their own art (which is never, ever enough to build a game around) so a warning there: don't waste money on DLC. I'll pre-empt it now. Learn to draw. Learn to edit your tilesets. Just do it. The DLC is just a cash grab. EVERY single generator pack, hero pack, etc, are re-packed MV DLCs, and even though there's file compatibility between MV and MZ, the art style, (and the facing direction of portraits, and the poses in SV battles) differ. MV's parts will make a blistering mess of your generator. Save your money. Regarding difference to MV: They are virtually the same in structure. The art differs slightly between the two. MZ allows map building with layer control (invaluable), MV does not (learning curve, harder to make map edits on complex maps). MZ allows the collapsing of conditionals in event editor, MV does not. MZ ships with a 64-bit compatible nw.js, MV does not*. MZ by default allows keyboard input for name input, MV uses a console-esque letter selection. MZ has better code support, MV uses older JS libraries. What else? Oh yeah, Plugins. MV has a metric TON of plugins to use, these add features to your game, or modify existing ones. MZ has less, which people will tell you is 'a bad thing' but MV ones can be converted to work in MZ. There's paid ones, tht are pretty good, but for most stuff, the free things will get you far. Lastly... I want to add a warning. If you plan on developing a game, and you've never done it before - it will - irreversibly - change your relationship with video games. The curtain lifts. You will see all the shortcuts. You will see all the lazy effort, ...and see right through the recycled slop that's shovelled out year after year by 'Big Game'. ...and your library of games you actually play will drop significantly. *compiled games can be made compatible with latest OS releases, but that's extra work

Trying to learn all this stuff is truly a miserable experience. You want to add something that sounds simple when said, like 'oh something animated in the background could be neat' or 'I'm going to have my characters be a little taller, but I don't have photoshop nor do I know how to use Gimp.' And then you spend hours researching how to do what you want to add in your game. I have 60 hours in this right now, but trust me, I have so much more in research. And then you find a cool plugin, but then it's actually for MV instead of MZ and then you look into how to convert a MV plugin for MZ and then you slowly learn how to code, but it's all just going over your head and your ADHD brain doesn't retain anything and you get distracted. And then you have so many parts of your game to work on that you get overwhelmed and stumped. Like 'oh shit I have how many characters now?! 9?! I need to make art for 9 characters and I want to add more?!' 'I forgot that I actually can't write and this dialogue actually sucks, I need to try again' 'Why do I have so many interior rooms to make pixel art of?!' 'Well, this doesn't really look right but I don't know how to do it better.' So instead of working on any of that, you just replay your game from the start to see if you can find any new problems to distract your brain with and half the time you do actually find something to fix. And then you have 10 ideas for other games to make but you'd really just like to get this one game done first so that you have something to show for all the time you spent on this instead of having a pile of unfinished projects. But you really have no idea where this story is going and you have a CRAB CULT because you operated on the concept of EVERY idea is a good idea and you're just making this game up as you go. I'm having fun, I really am, but if you buy this keep in mind that it's an absolute journey to actually make a finished project.

RPG Maker Engine is not ideal for making games. It is very limited without plugins and the use of script calls. However, you will go from 0 - 60 with your game instantly because of all the assets that come with the engine. The immediate dopamine hit of getting to create your world, characters, and interactables may just push you down the game dev rabbit hole to bigger and better engines. This is a great place to start for learning game design, what works and doesn't work and even some basic logic like "if else" statements without getting bogged down in asset creation and coding before reaching a playable point. Only once you taste the sweat nectar of a playable game will you be willing to put in the hard work to make something truly unique. At least, this was how it was for me. I took a month making an action RPG with this that my family played and enjoyed. It was a blast, but I quickly hit the wall of RPG maker's limitations. Some battle with the engine for years, really pushing it to its limits and creating work arounds, but this was enough for me to know the hardwork of learning a more open ended engine was worth it. I still recommend RPG maker as I never would of discovered the joy of game development without it and would have quit long before discovering the joy of having others play and enjoy something you created. For its low point of entry to the game dev world, it is worth it to buy and play around with to discover if this is something you truly want to do.

I got this because I am creating a video game for my daughter and this allows me to fulfill that dream. This all started because I made a small piece of music while my wife was pregnant that expressed how I felt about become a father. One song quickly became two and I found myself drafting a story to go along with the music that I was creating. I continued to add to it with the hopes of one day hiring something to actually build the game, and that's when I found this. With this game I am able to create a playground for my daughter to live in and for that alone I must give this a 10/10.

Lots to learn, but there's plenty of tutorials, including one that comes with. Time consuming, but it gets faster as you learn more and more. I plan on becoming a millionaire with this program.
