TL;DR: Ruined King: A League of Legends Story is a masterclass in turn-based combat that feels like a spiritual successor to Battle Chasers: Night War. Even if you have zero interest in League of Legends, Airship Syndicate’s tight, strategic gameplay and engaging narrative make this a 10/10 must-play. Review: Ruined King: A League of Legends Story Verdict: 10/10 I have absolutely no interest in League of Legends, but as a massive fan of Airship Syndicate’s previous work, Battle Chasers: Night War, I knew I had to play this. It feels like Battle Chasers 2 in the best way possible. While I still think Battle Chasers had the edge on pure mechanical originality, Ruined King delivers a tighter, more captivating story and an incredibly polished combat loop. Combat & Strategy Tactical Depth: The combat is fast, responsive, and demands deep thought—especially on the higher "Heroic" difficulty. Every decision matters, from managing shields and healing rotations to stacking crits and "true damage" debuffs. Playstyle Freedom: You aren't locked into a single way of playing. Through a mix of enchantments, abilities, and runes, you can craft your own unique builds. Whether you want to focus on high-crit multi-attacks or defensive sustainability, the game rewards those who take the time to master their team's synergy. The "WoW" Influence: Coming from over 9,000 hours in World of Warcraft, I felt right at home with the pacing and build management. The final boss fight was a true "edge of your seat" encounter—it required perfect timing and a bit of luck, proving that if you know how to manage rotations and cooldowns, you can overcome even the toughest odds. Narrative & Progression The World & Story: If you love Final Fantasy IV-VIII, the storytelling style here will feel incredibly familiar and welcoming. The narrative is cohesive, the characters are vibrant, and it succeeds where other games fail by giving its cast genuine personality and flavor. The "Airship Syndicate" Factor: Honestly, I only played this because of the developer. They consistently deliver high-quality, "damn good" games. Ruined King has a better story than Battle Chasers, though I still hold Battle Chasers in higher regard for its mechanics. Regardless, I am a customer for life—if they make it, I’ll buy it. Tips for the Journey Difficulty: "Veteran" can feel a bit easy if you’re a strategy veteran. I recommend bumping it up to "Heroic" if you want the combat to really shine. Gear & Builds: Don't feel the need to grind for legendary gear to beat the story. If you’re good at managing your rotations and knowing when to use your ultimates, you can clear the final boss with mid-tier equipment. Speed Up: Take advantage of the speed-up options for combat. It keeps the tempo fast and ensures the game never drags. Final Thoughts Even though I don’t plan on doing an achievement run (the story feels complete once the credits roll), this was a wonderful experience. If you’re a fan of turn-based RPGs, Battle Chasers, or just great tactical combat, don't let the League of Legends branding stop you. It’s an amazing game that stands entirely on its own merits.

Pros: Good story, fun gameplay, beautiful world. Cons: A lot of walking back and forth and a lot of annoying bugs. Overall: When on sale worth it!

8.5/10 I will preface all of this by saying that I'm a League player, so I do have a decade of nostalia. Always been a lover of the League lore. They also did a great job of re-creating League abilities in ways that make sense in this game, which is fun. This game has really fantastic writing, both in the story and in the character dialogue and development. Even the moments of chatter over the fire while resting has a lot of cool development. The game also has very cool combat. It is turn-based, but it has very interesting features with the "lane" system it uses. I really enjoyed it all game through, trying to balance when to use standard attacks, lane abilities, or ults. I think the Overcharge function is also a very cool addition to this. It allows you to build up some bonus mana so that you're not expending your actual mana. The main negative of the combat was that the enemies started to get a bit repetitive. Towards the end, there are a fair number which are reskinned versions of earlier monsters. I did not mind it too much, as you mostly only need to fight things once each, unless backtracking through zones. The overworld movement is meh. The run feature should be the default, not a toggle. I didn't find it for a while and movement was really slow before that. Overall the game is very good! Honestly, way better than I was expecting.

Voice acting spectacular, art beautiful, combat pretty good, music incredible. What do you mean we get so many cutscenes that the game was practically a movie? I got the game because.... Ahri and Miss Fortune but you don't even need to know anything about League to play this game. Very addicting to play. You can't get tired of it (except maybe the teleport option and you mostly have to walk a lot).
