One of the more unusual games out there. Despite its somewhat janky look (at least for some), it’s a genuinely great experience with a rather rare gameplay mechanic: creating your own attacks by combining different elements. The game is short, but works perfectly as a solid in-between title. The story draws heavily from Japanese mythology (Susanoo, Asura, Orochi, and the like), which gives it a distinctive atmosphere. Overall, it was fun and I can definitely recommend it.

It's made with so much love and care, and it is very fun to play. I hate to wiki information about games, and it took me way too long to figure out the mechanics. The game slowly gives you hints on how to assemble your skills to make great powerful attacks, but first you need to unlock the ability to add lots of "moves" to each attack. This takes a ton of grinding, playing really slowly, and not having a lot of fun. Once your attacks become powerful and you figure out how to "speed run" the maps and be efficient, you realize there's still so much end-game grinding now, because you'll never beat the final foozle boss without unlocking even more baloney. Or you could do like a 2 hour run to gear-up... but the game just doesn't have much dimension once you've figured out the basics. I'm not going to just power-nuke peon enemies for hours just to have a shot at getting a few pieces of gear with the "Revive" attribute so I can still win if I die once. It's just not that fun... I think many will love playing endlessly but I grew bored. I still say it's worth buying. I'm giving up because I've lost interest. I had the final foozle boss down to 25% HP and died. Oh well. I don't care anymore.

If you enjoy games like Dynasty Warriors and love the PS1 style pixel graphics, then you found your next favorite game! I've played a lot of Roguelite games and let me tell ya', this is one is pretty unique. You can literally build your own combos, there's 169 (semi-unique) samurai that you can collect/play, and combining different combos gives the player a creative outlook towards the game. There's so many options to choose from that it makes you want to try them all out. I highly recommend you try this game, it's 100% worth a shot. That being said, I'm sure you've seen many reviews regarding the instructions or information about the game in general. I get the whole "figure it out yourself" thrill aspect they were trying to go for (if that's what they were aiming for), but the "Master" (who is the only source of information within the game) rarely gives you good advice. Funny part is, I didn't discover that you could pause the game completely (without the slow-time ticking while your in the menus) by pressing [BACKSPACE] until I was 10 hours into the game. I get the frustration, especially since their aren't many guides on at all. What I would like to see in the future: I would honestly love more weapons, elements, and even samurai of course, but they've already added a lot so I can't complain about it really. They should include my combos as well, WITH hidden combo recipes you can find around the maps, that would be awesome.

I really like this game. A lot. Despite how negative this review might come off. It's a charming little action game that's really fun to just boot up and mess around with when I'm, say, on the train or on a lunch break. It's much more difficult than the sequel Metal Bringer and has a lot more replayability in my opinion, and while Metal Bringer sacrifices a bit of the challenge for the power fantasy and mindless fun, Samurai Bringer throws the entire kitchen sink at you even when you get far enough to make stupidly powerful builds. It makes it feel great to go into the game and challenge yourself using a specific starting gear. The ability to customize every action you have is the main draw of the gameplay and it shows. There are so many intricate ways you can put together actions to make them into entirely unique moves that string together into combos it's insane. The only downside, though, is that action combinations are unique to *every weapon type in the game*. While this definitely makes experimenting more fun it becomes a problem when the in-game timer keeps ticking in the menus and enemies slowly move to attack you while you're putting together new actions and experimenting. I feel like having some kind of area in the hall of souls to test out actions like, say, the training area in Lies of P, would've made this a non-issue. Speaking of the timer, it's honestly a really good design choice ignoring the whole "time never stops" thing. You're encouraged to get through areas quickly and work against the clock, as the more time you take to prepare the stronger in turn the Great Generals and Evil Spirits become, If you get to Orochi after day 20 you're honestly beyond screwed, so it's best not to wait around working on your build and farming gear for too long. Status effects suck. The design of both this game and Metal Bringer seem to hinge on this idea that the primary way of punishing the player should be inhibiting their movement which is extremely frustrating at best and genuinely infuriating and rage inducing at worst. Metal Bringer at leasts tones it in by making the annoying stunlock beam locked to a single enemy type, but nearly *every general in this game* has access to status, and it only takes a single hit to get frozen in place, paralyzed to a crawl, sent into a flailing fit when burning, or sent into a spin under storm. There's literally no counterplay to this except playing keep away with literally every general you run into or grabbing all the resistances which *require you to fight generals to get them*. Aside from all that, it's a good game. The fundamentals are strong enough that I can look past these details and enjoy the game for what it is. It having a retro style already makes these kinds of things easier to forgive anyways, and the price of entry is so low you might as well just try it. It gets my approval, at least.

Absolutely great game, any game that let's you fully customize your own moveset deserves the highest praise. Charming Visuals, Good Gameplay, everything good. Except the soundtrack, it's kinda grating.
