Samurai warriors 5 refocuses the series on the life of Nobunaga Oda and his vassals, especially that of his eventual assassin, Mitsuhide Akechi. Because of this focus, this game does not showcase the whole of the grand story of the Sengoku Jidai, where the previous games did. This will lead some to think that you are not getting as much content as in previous games. However, this game does indeed have the same amount of content in terms of level count, because the focus on Nobunaga allows for inclusion of the many battles in his life, many more so than previous entries in the past. One of the benefits of this is that you are able to connect a bit more to the characters in the story since they are more fully developed, and you get to understand them a lot more than previously. This has meant that quite a lot of characters that were fan favourites are not included in this game, essentially all the western clans i.e the Shimazu, the Mori, the Chosokabe, and the Tachibana. For those of you who enjoy the Samurai Warriors series, and were hoping for something different, this has definitely succeeded. The modification in art style to a more painterly style with more illustrative effects has refreshed the look of the series. A lot of the characters have had quite radical redesigns too (I'm looking at you, Yoshimoto Imagawa). The gameplay is for the most part familiar to those who played previous entries in the game, so there is not much to be surprised by in this aspect, but also not a huge evolution either. Some will not like the fact that weapons are no longer completely unique to each character, but this in other ways is good because it allows you to use your favourite move-set with any character. The skill system brings a welcome fresh breath of air to levelling up, which was something the series had been lacking for a while. Additionally, the battles now have more swinging and heavy tactical effects, meaning the completion of on map goals becomes more important, and generates a feeling of urgency in the game which us always good for generating agency. I do recommend this game, and thankfully you would not need to have played any previous game to enjoy this one. It is currently one of the best in the warriors series. I would also recommend buying the Sanada specific game to fill out the other side of this time period.

It's not really like the other SW games as it's more of a prequel tot he series and focuses largely on Nobunaga Oda and his path to becoming the "Demon King" (events prior to the SW series and the Nobunaga's Ambition franchise). It also has more of a comic art-style look but the gameplay is largely similar except there are only 30 playable characters (a little over half of SW 4). It's still a good, deep game but it's really meant for Nobunaga fans and not casual players.

After trying out the new demo for origins, I was itching for a warriors game. This has not disappointed in scratching that. The different art style is pretty and the return to basics on mechanics was a nice touch. If you like the older games and want more of that, I'd suggest this as a good purchase.

12 hours in over a few sessions, and this game is a pretty satisfying Warriors entry. The art style pops, the music hits well, and every hit feels meaty. There's enough variety in the characters and movesets to keep me happy, and the combo counter and rewards encourage a constant flow of action, which is surprisingly achievable with charge attacks and good route planning on the battlefield. It's a little grindy but that feels ok for a Warriors game, and my tastes have changed over the years so that the fact that there is no English dub for the game is not a problem for me - though it does mean I have to pause battles and check the log every so often to avoid missing out on interesting dialogue. The objective popups which halt the battle are actually very useful in that regard. I played a lot of Dynasty Warriors growing up, and the Orochi crossover games, and this is my first SW game. The story is immediately more well presented than most of the DW games, and I find myself invested in Oda's path. Not sure I would recommmend highly to the average gamer, but anyone with a passing interest in the Warriors franchise, or even just generally hack and slash genres + feudal Japan, will probably find this enjoyable.
