Don't believe the lies others will tell you, Serious Sam 2 is the best game in the franchise, and I've been waiting for a direct sequel for 20 years.

I went into Serious Sam 2 pretty skeptical, fully aware of its reputation and the design choices that often divide fans. But despite that hesitation, the game ended up being a genuinely pleasant surprise. At its core, it still plays like classic Serious Sam, but Croteam added a surprising amount of story to make the world and characters feel more alive instead of leaving it as a pure arena shooter. SS2 brings a lot of new ideas to the table: new weapons, tons of fresh enemy types, mounted guns, vehicles, and even the ability to pick up objects to boost yourself to higher areas. It definitely feels different from the earlier games, but it still delivers comedy and chaos in its own way. The jokes are corny, sure, but they’re entertaining, and the sheer variety of maps is impressive each one feels distinct, weird, and packed with personality. That said, a few changes don’t land as well. Secrets are far too straightforward compared to the clever hidden spots from the earlier games. There are barely any jump scares or surprise monster spawns. Rocket jumping is gone, and invisible walls keep you from exploring off-map like you could before. These things do chip away at that classic SS feel, but they aren’t enough to ruin the game, and I won’t hold those optional design changes against Croteam. It didn’t take long for my opinion to flip from skeptical to positive. It’s a fresh take on Sam’s adventures, and honestly, I regret skipping it for so long. The map design alone is worth experiencing. I played on Serious difficulty, and my only real complaint is that the second-last fight on the final map is brutally unbalanced easily the most masochistic part of the entire run. If you’re put off by the cheesiness or the tonal shift, I still recommend giving SS2 a shot if you’re a true Serious Sam fan. It’s not as strong as the prequels, but it’s still a very enjoyable ride — and whenever it goes on sale, it costs about as much as a cup of coffee.

How can I describe Serious Sam 2… It's obnoxious, nonsensical, insensitive, and violent. It’s definitely trapped within the confines of the early to mid 2000s, but that's what I love about it. It’s kind of like a hot toddy or a thick, warm blanket from your parents house; it’s cozy and reminds you of simpler times. This game feels like it lives on the shelves of a sticky, musty second-hand games store in Nowheresville, USA. The plastic case is obviously not the original, the tabs inside it are cracked and it no longer closes completely, the cover art is starting to succumb to UV damage because it's on a shelf that faces the giant windows out front, and the games manual is frayed and held together with scotch tape. You can’t tell if this is a game no one wants or if everyone's given it a go and brought it back shortly after to live or rot next to numerous copies of Dead To Rights or Triggerman. But hey, it’s 5 bucks, you’re broke and bored, how bad could it possibly be? As it turns out, It’s pretty damn good! Out of all the Serious Sam games I’ve played (The First Encounter, Second Encounter, and Before First Encounter. I just bought 4 and Siberian Mayhem and I plan on getting around to them soon) this is probably the one I enjoyed the most, which is surprising because I’ve always heard it was the most maligned, next to the gray-brown snorefest of BFE. But I can kind of see why it didn’t do so well, it’s tonally different from its predecessors both story and looks wise. It’s bright, colorful, and cartoony. It doesn’t take anything seriously and has this almost child-like or immature atmosphere to it, like it was written and designed by kids with action figures in a sandbox. It has that signature annoying early-aughts sense of humor (Annoying voices, silly antics, random farts, general meta-referential nonsense to pop culture) that was beginning to be tired and worn out by 2005. But I think that gives it a somewhat loveable charm that doesn’t necessarily stand the test of time, but stands firmly and proudly as a piece of ephemera from that age. It’s a fun little road trip through several alien worlds where Sam boldly wanders into conflict and shouts like a fratboy at an alien before blowing it to bits. You can tell Croteam was having fun making this game and seeing what shit they could throw and make stick. After all, they got a bigger budget, they even got Corta- sorry, Netrisca a face and a voice actress! As per the rest of the Sam games: You still have big shootouts in wide arenas with hordes of enemies that seem to never end. You still get punched in the dick for finding a secret that gives you a nominal bonus (albeit I’ve noticed the punishments are less cruel and unusual in this one). You still have a wide arsenal to turn bad guys into paste with, including a few new faces like an alien handgun, bird bombs, and a pair of Uzis to name a few. Hell, you can even dual wield any gun you want on demand: rocket launcher in one hand to soften them up and finish them off with a few well placed blasts of your Shotgun, or akimbo mini-guns to shred bosses to ribbons. There's even turret and vehicle sections that aren’t a pain in the ass or boring! I felt like there was always something more waiting for me around the corner other than pressing S+MB1. I really don’t have any complaints. This was a really nice experience that didn’t try my patience like TFE or TSE and it didn’t bore me to tears like BFE. The 20th anniversary update that came out in October 2025 has also given this game some new life with visual and QOL changes, although the cut scenes are still in a crispy 640x480, but it’s fine! Don’t change it, they’re beautiful in that resolution. I guess the only negative thing I have to say is that it seems the achievements aren’t working currently. Kind of a bummer, oh well, It’ll probably get fixed later. I cringed a little, I laughed a little, and I kicked a lot of ass. It goes on sale for like $2.50 and you’ll get plenty of bang for your buck. Play it with a Jungle/DnB playlist in the background to teleport back to the early 2000s. I fully recommend it. I rate it “I can’t believe they added Sex to Serious Sam”/10.

Many ppl don't like this game because of the cartoon style, but... Carton style says nothing, this game feels so damn good and brutal even in this format. Music design is well made and the music itself just amazing (as always in ss series). Many guns variations, TONS of mobs variations, so many locations, VERY MANY bosses. Each location has their own boss, thats cool for fast FPS. Very much jokes in this part, almost every cutscene saturated with irony and comedy. Takes so long to complete, but im cool with that, i liked every part of this game. Graphic are INSANE for its releade date, i was very shocked by the graphic and then i saw 2005, that a WOW for me. 2 guns at the same time - thats the most coolest thing, i liked this so much in wolfenstein too. TONS of secrets and TONS of transport. DEFINITELY recommend this, "very controversial game", might not be likeable for some players, but you should try it anyway
