For what this is - a short (3 hours), inside-like walking sim - this had one of the more refreshing takes on the genre. They took a unique picman-esk mechanic and implemented it to perfection. The joy I felt running through the open fields with my flock at full speed while the music picks up around me was incredible. This may be weird but I loved the lack of exploration. I never felt like I had to stop to go see if anything was in a nook or cranny in the levels. They keep it incredibly linear and I think it helps the game so much. There is never a time I felt like a mechanic was used too long before a new one was introduced. This is a fantastic game to pick up on a rainy day and finish in one sitting. The music, the art, the world really surprised me in the best way.
Herdling is a third-person adventure game that sees you shepherding a herd of animals known as Calicorns. Starting in down-trodden conditions, you and your herd must journey through a vast landscape in search of a safe harbour for you and your new-found family. What makes Herdling stand out the most is its beautiful presentation. The screenshots show a glimpse of that, but seeing it in motion will leave you in awe. Coming across a new vista that stretches out as far as the eye can see is a unique experience that is hard to describe. In truth, Herdling is a game about freedom, and nothing encapsulates that more than being able to run and stampede across a vast, open landscape with your herd of Calicorns, with not a fear in the world. Couple that with the game's beautiful soundtrack, and you have one of the most remarkable flow-state games to be released in recent years. It's not all fast-paced though. There are plenty of slower moments, whether that's tending to your herd, solving puzzles and removing obstructions, or stealthing past hostile birds. How you guide your herd is important, and while getting them to move the way you want them to move can be frustrating at times, it is all part of the challenge. Ultimately, Herdling is more varied than it initially comes across. I actually think it deserves a lot more recognition than it has received so far. Okomotive's previous titles were the FAR games, and Herdling is a notable change of direction for the developers. Regardless, their effort was a resounding success, and I can highly recommend Herdling to anyone. This game isn't about the money, the time it takes to play or the puzzles. Art style is beautiful and creative, the story is there for you to discover on your own terms. But the heart of this game lies in your calicorns, each of them unique and with the occasional little quirk. Some need more attention and love, some are brave and fierce but the charm of this game is that they're different every time you play. I went into my first playthrough thinking like I assume most do. "How hard can it be to keep them all alive to the end? This is gonna be piss easy." You're broken in gently, mechanics of the game made clear in a gorgeously subtle experience that doesn't fatigue in repeated playthroughs. Then the complacency kicks in. Before you know it, one of your calicorns has perished. It's a disappointment and I briefly grieve for my calicorn and my ego that was bested by a walking simulator. I make an inward vow to do better for my remaining herd and continue onward to complete our travels. The first stampede after that loss is where everything changed. It's haunting and peaceful all at once. Glorious, yet sombre. Heart-breaking and tormenting. For anyone that has lost a pet, their best friend, their second shadow: I was hit by a wave of emotion every time I was teased with their presence. Made me feel some things I've not put myself through for a while. Can't recommend this enough. Take all my money and do something good with it.
all in all, its too expensive, the game is less than 3 hours long, there is 0 replayability, 0 gameplay besides moving your chonksters left or right, 0 puzzles (would have been a nice touch here), 0 dialogue, 0 story (again, I get its a contemplative game, and maybe some people will call those paintings a "story" but no, its not). i wish steam had a neutral review, as Im only recommending this on a deep sale, because despite all the above, the game is still enjoyable to play, and very unique.
This is a fun short game. If you are tired of shooting, killing, complex story and puzzzles, this is a game for you. Its a relaxing experience, maybe something you play after you are done with a game and just need to unwind. Also the music is good. Will recomend. Just give the devs some coin of appreciation by buying this game.
