Dec. 2025
Skullgirls 2nd Encore is a rare fighting game that’s both instantly charming and endlessly deep. On the surface it’s bright, stylish, and funny; underneath it’s a brutally technical tag fighter where movement, confirms, and decision-making stack up into near-infinite expression. It’s the kind of game that can feel welcoming in your first hour and still teach you new things after your hundredth. The core appeal is flexibility. You can run a full team, a duo, or even a single character, and the game’s balance systems make those choices feel meaningfully different rather than strictly “worse.” Team size changes damage, assists, and pace, so you’re constantly shaping your own playstyle. That freedom makes experimentation addictive: you’re always tempted to try a new assist pairing, a new point character, or a new reset route. Mechanically, it’s a love letter to fast, aggressive fighters. Movement is slippery in a good way, pressure strings are creative, and combos can get long—but they aren’t just for show. The game is packed with moments where you’re choosing between damage, positioning, meter, or a mix-up that keeps your turn. Defense also matters: learning to block well, use pushblock, and escape resets is half the real game, and it’s what separates flailing from confidence. The tutorial and training tools are among the best in the genre. It does a genuinely strong job of explaining concepts that many fighters leave to YouTube and Discord, and it gives you a path from “I can do a special move” to “I understand why I’m getting opened up.” That said, the skill ceiling is high, and the game can be unforgiving if you jump straight into experienced lobbies. It’s worth treating the early losses as information rather than failure. Presentation is a huge part of why Skullgirls endures. The hand-drawn animation is gorgeous and expressive, with characters that feel alive in every idle stance, taunt, and hit reaction. The soundtrack is energetic without getting repetitive, and the overall aesthetic—jazzy, cartoony, slightly grimy—makes the game instantly recognizable. It’s stylish in a way that never feels generic. Single-player content is surprisingly robust for a fighter: story modes, challenges, trials, and a variety of ways to practice without going online. It’s not a full RPG campaign, but it’s enough to keep you engaged while you build fundamentals. And because each character has a distinct personality and kit, even basic arcade runs feel different depending on who you choose. If you want a tag fighter with ridiculous depth, top-tier presentation, and a community that’s kept it alive for years, Skullgirls 2nd Encore is an easy recommendation. Just go in knowing what it is: a fast, reset-heavy game where creativity is rewarded and knowledge matters. Learn one team, enjoy the process, and you’ll understand why people keep coming back.

Alright, let’s get this out of the way—Skullgirls 2nd Encore used to be the cool kid at the 2D fighter table, the one with hand-drawn animation, a killer soundtrack, and a seriously shady sense of humor. But then, for reasons that defy all logic, the devs decided to scrub away every last ounce of edge the game had. We're talking about the DLC content disappearing like a bad ex, the sexualized characters being wiped clean (even though, let's be real, that was basically the game's whole appeal in the first place), and don’t even get me started on the history edits. They removed references to the Second World War and cleaned up the ♥♥♥ storyline to avoid too much "police brutality" (because yeah, that’s what we all need, right? A sanitized history lesson). Oh, and they also removed the Russian announcer’s voice, clearly because of the war with Ukraine. This game, which had nothing to do with it, now has everything to do with it. It's still a playable fighter, sure, but calling this mess "unchanged" is like saying a cake is still a cake after you pour bleach on it. QUALIFICATION 9/10 NAZIS
