---See where this game landed on my Metroidvania Tier List beneath this rec!--- Excellent soulslike metroidvania which plays a lot like Hollow Knight exploration-wise but with parry-centric combat akin to Nine Sols . I don't want to risk over-sensationalizing it. Hollow Knight and MIO handle exploration even better than Solateria does, creating a better sense of awe and discovery - and the parry in Nine Sols is slicker and easier to execute, but Solateria still does both of these aspects very well. I played through and 100%'d the achievements on the hardest difficulty. I recommend trying to play it on the hardest because that difficulty has directional parry and the challenge feels just right to me on that setting. Late game there are a few bosses that are more or less on par with Eigong from Nine Sols which will feel quite extreme, you may love or hate that - but you can just drop the difficulty down at that point if you wish (though you would miss out on the Legendary difficulty achievement by doing so). I loved this game and it joins MIO and Silksong as one of my top 10 favourite metroidvanias. My gripes with the game: The map frequently reveals too large of an area (like in RIN: Last Child - not as bad as that, but still). Because of the amount of backtracking in metroidvanias, this flaw in the map can trick you into thinking a place has been explored when you haven’t actually been there. Despite this, I managed to 100% explore the map without too much trouble, but it was something that was irking me a bit during my playthrough. The game doesn’t pause when you look at your inventory/map. They patched in an option to pause in the options menu but that’s still not ideal. Often when you're close to an enemy - visibly a tiny bit to the left or right of one, the enemy can try to attack you facing the wrong direction, like it has trouble accurately determining where the player is standing when you are in close quarters. This attack will still hit you and you'll want to parry it. On the hardest difficulty the parrying is directional so to parry this, it means you need to parry against the direction that it has chosen to attack, even though the enemy may be facing right and you're to the left of them. It's a bit backwards and irksome and led me to prioritize repositioning myself in some of the harder boss fights. This problem is one that most other metroidvanias don't suffer from and it leads to the combat feeling a bit finicky when comparing to say.. Nine Sols . Every equippable trinket comes with pro's and con's and I wasn't convinced that any of them would be a definite improvement. This deterred me from changing things up, so I ending up ignoring them all and stuck with the starting trinkets. There isn't enough space in a Steam Rec to post my entire Tier List, so I cut off the bottom tiers. You can find the latest (and better) version of the Tier List on my reddit profile which I update roughly every six months or sooner, located here: [url=https://www.reddit.com/r/metroidvania/comments/14l87nn/my_large_metroidvania_tier_list/]Tier List ===================== My Metroidvania Tier List (PC) (excluding Metroid & Castlevania titles) ===================== -Not an objective list, purely how much I enjoyed the games- S+ Aeterna Noctis | S Tier (Truly Special) Astalon: Tears of the Earth | Hollow Knight: Silksong | MIO: Memories in Orbit | Hollow Knight | Master Key³$ | Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom | S- Solateria | Blasphemous 2 | Cathedral | Crypt Custodian³ | A+ Afterimage | The Last Faith | Supraland³ | Supraland: Six Inches Under³ | Oolo³ | Frogmonster³ | A Tier (Amazing) Elderand | Ori and the Will of the Wisps | Doomblade^ | BioGun | Zexion | Chronicles of the Wolf | Kotama and Academy Citadel | Blossom Tales 2³$ | A- Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights | Depths of Sanity | F.I.S.T. | Pampas & Selene | Ender Magnolia | Mandragora | B+ Blast Brigade | Haak | Turbo Kid | Nine Sols | Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus | Biomorph | Minishoot’ Adventures³ | Banjo-Kazooie³ | Banjo-Tooie³ | Donkey Kong 64³ | B Tier (Really Enjoyed) Animal Well | Alwa’s Legacy | Steamworld Dig 2 | Islets | Blasphemous | After Death | Pronty^ | Mortal Manor* | Escape From Tethys | Outbuddies DX* | Monster Sanctuary | Elliot Quest | Rebel Transmute | Moonlight Pulse | Environmental Station Alpha | Twilight Monk | Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown | Death’s Door³ | Pipistrello and the Cursed Yo-yo³ | Yooka-Laylee³ | B- Shadow Labyrinth | Haiku, the Robot | The Mobius Machine | Ultros | Voidwrought | Crystal Project³ | Unsighted³ | Tunic³ | Prey (2017)³ | C+ (Fun) Lone Fungus | Lone Fungus: Melody of Spores | Guns of Fury | Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night | Ghost Song | Kunai | Kingdom Shell | Axiom Verge | Treasure Adventure Game | GigaSword* | Infernax | Flipwitch# | Momodora 4 | Momodora 5 | HunterX | HunterX: code name T | Gestalt | Alruna and the Necro-Industrialists | Super Roboy | BladeChimera | AntiChamber³ | Blossom Tales³$ | C Tier (More or Less Enjoyed) The Throne | Plague of Yamorn* | Constance | Column on the Sea | 9 Years of Shadows | Jrago* | Laika: Aged through Blood | MF-01 Aerostrike^ | Xanthiom Zero | Carrion^ | Chasm | Wuppo | The Mummy Demastered | Catmaze | Curse of the Sea Rats* | Death’s Gambit: Afterlife | Castle In The Clouds DX# | Omega Strike | Aggelos | Midnight Castle Succubus# | Overbowed | Rabi-Ribi | TEVI | Far Star | Sheepo | Skelethrone: The CoE* | Unworthy | Undivine | Somber Echoes | Oirbo* | Ato | Side Scape³$ | And All Would Cry Beware³ | Lycanthorn 2³ | Vomitoreum³ | Maid of Salvation³ | Grumpy Jack³ | Jedi: Fallen Order³ | Arkham Asylum³ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ^ = Mouse & Keyboard are STRONGLY advised. * = Very raw indie or contains some jank or lack of polish. # = Pornovania. ³ = 3D game or different camera perspective: Not a 2D sidescroller. $ = A Zelda-like (which I consider to be a similar genre).

For Souls vets, play on the hardest difficulty. There is no other way. This is a Sekiro-like. Nothing like DS. If you don't parry, you will die. If you are good at parrying, you will have a good time. There's some unbalanced jank with the weakness of blocking and bosses getting an annoying shield that is extremely rough to deal with. There are no hints on navigations. So, venture forth. If it's too hard, try another way.. You can't outlevel the dificulty as stats seem to do too little early on. Enjoy. ~~ Post 100% the game ~~ (There's a bug not providing some players with a full 100% acheievement at the time of this posting) Great great! Think Hollow Knight's mood meets Sekiro. The boss fights are why you play this game. The 2nd half of the game provides some excellent bosses for you to lab until you get into your flow state and floor them. The story has the feels too. They are a bit heavy handed with stating what happens at some point since they characters speak in an unknown language. A lot ways to build your Tott and the devs have been listening to feedback that has made the game better. The game feels different than when I first started. Must buy if you like the genre and want something to sink your teeth into. I beat it in 25 hrs 100% on legendary. You will get more hours if you haven't already played anything like Sekiro or need to play the easier difficulties.

Edit: The devs have made adjustments to the parrying. My initial feelings were very positive aside from the parrying so if they've made it better consider this review 100% positive about the game but look into that aspect for yourself as I've completed the game and am fine with not returning to it for the time being. If you enjoyed Hollow Knight then this one is definitely worth a look. Its almost on that level if not for one aspect: the parry focused combat. Its entirely trial and error because there are no tells for when an attack is coming. It does that wonderful Fromsoft crap of 90% windup, 10% swing. And the timing is stupidly tight on the NORMAL difficulty. How much worse is it on hard? I'll never know because ♥♥♥♥ that. The parry is also directional which leads to frustrating hits from sweeping attacks. The parrying simply drags down what is an otherwise incredible game. The map is huge with lots of items and lore find and the art style is quite lovely. Primarily played on Deck OLED. Only issue is some text is a little hard to read but otherwise ran well.

A very, very solid Metroidvania. Somewhat of a cross between Hollow Knight and Nine Sols. Takes the parry heavy gameplay of Nine Sols with the more open ended exploration and storytelling style of Hollow Knight. It doesn't quite reach the heights of Hollow Knight or Silksong, though I'd say it's of a kind with Nine Sols in terms of quality. For any fan of Metroidvania's it is a no brainer recommendation. There are four difficulty levels, so you can adjust to accommodate the level of difficulty you are comfortable with. The easiest difficulty is such that anyone could finish the game. The hardest difficulty will provide a challenge to the most seasoned Hollow Knight player. The game isn't perfect - hitboxes can be a little funny at times and some of the boss movesets can feel a little herky jerky. However, still an easy 8/10 and thrilled to see another very strong entry into the genre.

As of the writing of this review I am probably one of the first to beat this game with 100% (trophy stat says 0.1% percent of players). I enjoyed so many things about this game. It's a solid Hollow Knight clone. It was mostly a fun time. I only encountered one bug where I fell through the world and had to restart and lose a little progress. A lot of other reviewers say the parry timing is too tight and other say quit whining there's a difficulty setting. I have played a lot of these kinds of games and I agree with the former. The bosses ramp up in a way that is just mind boggling at the "normal" difficulty. By the time I got to the five warriors I had to kick it down a notch. By the time I got to the final boss I was so tired of it I turned it all the way down. I enjoy a good challenge but this isn't a good challenge. It's an unreasonable challenge. So only play this if you are willing to swallow your pride and tune it down because I really don't believe there's going to many people toppling this one in warrior or legendary mode.
