This is a farming simulator at it's core, but there's significantly more to this game than watering crops. You're attending a magic university, casting spells with music, brewing potions. There's absolutely no combat and a lot of rythm-based mini-games. There's also fishing (of course), lots of questing, faffing around with your classmates and your chaotic roomie, there's a d&d campain, tavern performers, cats and other animals to pet, actualy classes where they teach you world's lore. The artstyle is beatiful. It' remind me of cartoons with it's flat sprites and rich colors. Every piece of this game was made with love and it shows. I hope more people would check it out.

In very short: I do wholeheartedly recommend this game! The devs decided to keep the demo around and I could continue the demo save so add another 5 hours to my play time for reference. So if in doubt play the demo and then consider for yourself if you want to support the game / dev, wait for a sale if you disagree with the price on offer or skip this title if you feel its not what you are looking for. I for myself was eagerly looking forward to the release after finishing the demo. __________ Songs of Glimmerwick is set in a world where magic (in the form of song) was outlawed and oppressed 40 years ago and you are one of the new witch students in one of the schools that managed to stick trough the time where magic was forbidden except for certain individuals belonging to the group called the Silencers. The game has a beautiful art style, full EN voice acting for all mayor AND minor characters (with some lovely accents). Character creation is alright and you can later change things again if you feel like changing, its a magical world after all. The school gives me positive Harry Potter vibes but with only one house and way less drama. So far all other students seem to have a personality and even tough I usually minmax farming games in this one I am actually interested in how the story continues for some of the characters. One day you listen in on a crystal ball call between one of the newjoiners and their overbearing parents about how he has settled in, others start spreading their wings of independence or have their own personal goals ahead of them or wishes they want to see fulfilled while studying. I do hope the very strong start will continue. All characters seem to have their schedule and things to do, so you can bumb into them all over the place. I really do like that they all seem to have some thought put into them. Talking to them also revealed some nice quests, once a bigger topic is unlocked you can often speak to people about it and they have their own opinion on it or share more of their background or story with you. Another thing I do love (others might disagree) is that key events on your schedule can not be missed. Overall the time / clock marches on, weather changes and people do follow their schedule but once the clock reaches the time of the key event it stops. So you can finish up what you are doing, spend the rest of your mana and then head for the event. So no reloading because you missed the start of an event. :D Further, you can save the game anytime, not just at the beginning of a new day. (Except during key events, there also no saving is possible but they are usually not that long) Farming / Gardening is a big part of the game but at the same time so far it does not feel too overbearing. You can directly access something that helps with watering and aside of vermin I have no trouble keeping the plants of a steadily growing field alive. The minigames and key loop is all about songs and music, so if you hate rhythm games or minigames this might be a tough game for you (it has some accessibility / difficulty settings that can help). While I usually am not great so far I managed. Everything seems to have their own song, like you can already hear which fish you have hooked by the song that plays and for the gardening once mastered you don't need to play the song anymore yourself as it memorizes your best score. Same for potions. Both music and potions can be practiced so you don't waste resources while mastering a difficult potion or time while mastering a song. I love that feature as it rewards practice while not enforcing grind. I do wish the controls were a bit more intuitive but once I figured out to use "space" for most of the interaction and right click on items in the quickbar the game became way more enjoyable. That being said I did “ship” some items unintentionally. :D So back to school for me, there is an order of 10 tulips that is not fulfilling itself.

I'm halfway through the game and while I'm enjoying the experience, it is different to what thought it to be. The music, voice acting and world are gorgeous and I'm pleasantly surprised with how much there is to explore and see. That said, the social, school and magic side of the game feel light. It often feels like busy-work, where I'm a gardener, not a student - I'm rarely learning anything in most of the classes I've attended and I spend the majority of my time running errands outside of the school. I understand that sitting through dialogue heavy classes probably wouldn't be exciting, however it's not particularly exciting for a herbology class to result in "pick flowers for a flower festival" or "here's a new area, go pick flowers and we'll watch flowers as a cut scene". I would have loved to see something like a handbook that let you identify plants as you progressed the game. That could have tied a lot of the systems together: our job as a gardener, our potion class (which uses plants we find and grow) and the rarely visited library. The garden itself is cute, yet frustrating. The rate at which grass grows and vermin damage your crops is very aggressive and could easily be tuned down. I'm also a little bummed with some of the quality of life decisions. You can't view item tooltips before purchasing them, so at times need to purchase something to see what it does. Some crops and plants are multi-harvest, some are not, and this isn't displayed anywhere. Some food gives a fishing buff, what it does I'll never know. No chest sorting or send to chest button, you have to manually drag everything. Some items need some extra information... I have a beebox and I have no idea whether it's doing anything. I've loved everything with the music except one thing. Once you unlock a spell at max rank, you won't ever hear that tune again. Please, please, please make the tune play even when you auto-cast it. I also want to point out that some of the writing is pretty poor. I'm a bit of an English scrub myself but I was able to pick up on some pretty obvious flaws in lore and how dialogue is written. The story is set 40 years after a crisis yet there's people looking well above 40 years old talking about how it changed their childhood. It also just sets information down at times, giving no reason to why things are happening. I stumble upon the school and my name was on the admission list. Why? The game never tells you. It's just *magic*. Overall, I would still recommend the game because it is still enjoyable, but you may need to hone your expectations.

Songs of Glimmerwick is a lovely game overall. If you're looking for something that feels like a nice warm cup of tea, this is it. However, it's not a game for everyone, and it has a repetitive game loop. One of the reviewers described it as a game as an experience, and that feels right. This is part review, part feedback on my experience with it. -------------- TLDR: I'd recommend it, and I'd play it again. However, I'd take it a lot slower. There isn't much replayability value in it, unless you want to improve things you've done, but I'd happily pick it up if there were more quests. It's truly a labour of love. It feels a little weak and unrewarding in some of the 'game' aspects of it, but what it does well, it does really well. (Forest and Fairies won my heart!) The art style was also fantastic! As was the music. I perfected the game in 44 hours, but 4-8 hours was likely AFK/got distracted time. It could be done much faster for sure. ----------- My best advice while playing it is to let the quests sit a bit, and approach it as an experience instead of trying to be a completionist each day. I tend to play as the latter and I found certain parts of it grew quite dull and repetitive because I was doing too much of it - more than needed to be done - and the grind didn't feel rewarding. The characters have good personality, but a lot of their dialogue is repetitive, and doesn't change much beyond two-three instances of talking to them a season. I feel like this could have been improved, but with every line voice acted, it's probably a bit more difficult. I loved how they each had their own quirks, but I felt like we - as the player - lacked some of those quirks / abilities as well! In a world so filled with magic, and magic being endless, it would have been neat for us to have a couple abilities or little spells, etc. that set us apart. It would have been equally nice for us to be able to upgrade, perhaps, our skills more than what was offered. I feel like there could have been a 3-4 star system that would have allowed some increased speed, and more reduced mana cost because the food didn't feel as helpful, and farming 8 plots and you were out of energy for a good chunk of the early and mid game. Perhaps I was being too aggressive as a farmer, but it felt like a struggle until I was in winter. The quest system allows you to take quests at your own pace. It was interesting reading about players doing certain quests in fall and winter that I had completed before spring was even over. But I feel like as much as that is a boon to the game, it's also a bane. There wasn't as much to do in Winter because I had done so much of it early, and quickly, that by the time winter came, I had nothing to do, the character dialogues were feeling very repetitive, and I was sleeping away every day and having to wait for events outside of farming for achievement money. I think some of the quests, or more of the quests, should be a bit more season locked, or force you to space them out. Or perhaps the game simply needs more quests and events. It would have been nice if we could have tried creating our own potions that did things, or going on quests to craft some custom songs / upgrading songs. I was absolutely delighted by the music mini-games, adored fishing, though it didn't always feel worth it beyond the initial quest. And that's how I felt with a few areas in the game. They feel a little under utilized. Beautiful and lovely to explore. Finding them and wondering what's going to lead us there again, and a scene happens once, sometimes twice, and then returning to those areas, and talking to those NPCs again and again aren't rewarded. This all sounds a little critical, and some of it was likely because I overplayed it too quickly. Some of the handholding in the game also felt very strong with certain quests (the toads, oh my gosh the toads), but that's because I spent the days talking to everyone about them trying to gather all the little tidbits, and that's probably not how most people play - it's how I wished I could have played though! The moments of Songs of Glimmerwick that felt delightful hit very well. Forest and Fairies was fantastic. The music games were fun. The potion mini-game was delightful AND frustrating. I wanted more. The story behind it all was intriguing, and the character and story moments were really sweet. Overall, I've recommended it a few of my friends who I know this game will be perfect for, and exactly what they are looking for. I want to play it again and see if a couple decisions give me different story aspects. I think my biggest gripe with the game is that I fell in love with its bones, lore, and mechanics, and I would have loved to see more done with them.

My literal only complaint so far is you can’t select red hair at the beginning of the game (as a redhead lol)
