Jan. 2026
It's good (I guess), but I have A LOT of bones to pick with this shit. First of all, delisting tons of other games on Steam, many not even remotely related to this, just to force people to buy this gobbledygook, hodgepodge, rickety ass, monstrosity of a collection is fucking atrocious. Second, this thing has DRM out the ass. It can be laggy for no reason and took me effort to even get it to work. Also, what about these 30 year old games requires an internet connection to work? Is Knuckles connecting to some scandalous Rouge goon-material while I'm AFK on the main menu? Unnecessary DRMmaxxing. Third, the Anniversary modes are mediocre. Sure, they're the Christian Whitehead versions, which is great, but it feels like some things got the Mania treatment, and others got forgotten. If you're gonna go this far, just finish the job, SEGA. I suppose it is a lot asking for a proper remaster, but so is asking $30-$40. Fourth, Sonic 1. In 2026. This millennium. They charged me HOW MUCH for that fucking hot dog shit? At least they had the decency to add the spin-dash in this version. The Genesis collection had it right at 99¢. Sonic 1 is Nuremberg worthy in it's natural form. Fifth, I get why the music needs to be changed in Sonic 3&K, but after this long they really still haven't been able to figure SOMETHING out?? It's just annoying to always have to rely on the community for this. If you want to get the original music you need to mod the game yourself. Sixth, GameGear games! Aaaaas DLC... Honestly, this one speaks for itself. I could go on, but that's enough, you get the point. Sure, it's alright if you ignore what I mentioned. At the end of the day, it's really just a cash grab from SEGA and not much more. The only reason to get this is for the Christian Whitehead experience, which, in my opinion, is definitive, unless you want the original experience. Recommended, but very reluctantly. It can be good, but know what you're buying ...

Making a positive review so more people see it) ONLY pick up this game when it's on sale so you can get Origins Plus pretty cheap and IMMEDIATELY install the Ultrafix Mod. It fixes a lot of the issues with this game and also the HQ OST Mods and you're all good to go. Otherwise avoid this and play other ports, buying this game on console is not a good idea.

Quite frankly, the only reason I "recommend" this game is due to the fact that you can fix it with mods. Specifically the Ultrafix mod goes a long way in repairing what is otherwise the videogame equivalent of Bill Buckner's ground ball miss. Something that in theory should be impossible to f*ck up and is guranteed to result in a W, only to somehow find a way to choke it hardcore. Not to say there aren't things about it that work. The coin mechanic is an exellent way to ease new players into the mechanics that Classic Sonic handles, which can otherwise be very punishing to inexperienced players, and the fact you can use them to retry the Special Stages means that getting Super Sonic or the good endings is no longer a matter of pure memorization and trial and error. The additions of the Spindash in Sonic 1, and the Dropdash across all 4 games are welcome, aswell as the fact that using them is less risky due to the 16:9 widescreen giving you better visibility to see enemies or hazards coming. The new animations are stellar and charming, the mission mode can provide good challenges for veterans and the museum that features production material and artwork from all games is particularly great for people like me, who are artists themselves, even if you can just google these images all the same. This is no 3D All Stars, but that is not a high bar to clear to begin with. It's just about what you expect when you buy something like this. What you don't expect, however, is for the game to suffer from physics errors that cause many a sequence to break completely, have glitches that never existed in the originals, audio sync problems with cutscenes, have the classic mode be a straight up lie, have a complete lack of customization options for the visuals like there being no CRT filter, which is just about the most basic thing you could add, have Sonic 3's ost be gutted, and just in general be unpolished and inaccurate to the games they're trying to bring back. At it's core, it's still good, because the classics are great games, but if actually want to play accurate versions of those beloved games you won't find it here out of the box. If you buy this, do it at a sale, and if you play it, do it with mods, otherwise stay away. Oh, and don't bother with the "Plus" expansion please. Badly emulated Game Gear games and 1 extra character is not worth the extra money.

I can recommend this game, however , only if you really want convenience above everything else. There are far better ways to play all of the main games in this package. If you are looking at this game for your one stop shop for these classic games, I highly recommend investing some time into installing the Ultrafix mod, as well as potentially installing higher quality soundtracks (especially for 3&K, where some songs are replaced because of legal issues on top of the audio quality in that game being weirdly lower than every other game!) They're decent ways to play these games if you just want to get in and out, but if you really care about getting the best experience and having a vast library of mods at your fingertips, give this release a miss and get the Sonic mobile decompilations + Sonic 3 A.I.R.

Gotta go fast! My new favorite way to play the original 4 games. Would have been nice to include Sonic 3D but I'm still happy with the new features they packed into it. The cut scenes were a nice addition, and the game looked pretty sharp on my 4K TV!
