Sovereign Syndicate is a narrative-driven role-playing game developed by Crimson Herring Studios that blends classic CRPG sensibilities with a distinctive Victorian steampunk setting. Drawing clear inspiration from titles such as Disco Elysium and traditional tabletop role-playing systems, the game emphasizes storytelling, character development, and player choice over combat-heavy mechanics. The result is an experience that prioritizes atmosphere, dialogue, and moral ambiguity. The writing is one of the game’s strongest elements. Dialogue is dense, often introspective, and frequently presents the player with morally complex decisions rather than clear-cut “good” or “evil” options. Choices tend to have delayed consequences, encouraging players to think carefully about how they interact with both individuals and institutions. While the pacing can occasionally feel slow—particularly in dialogue-heavy segments—the overall narrative payoff is strong for players willing to engage deeply with the text. Sovereign Syndicate eschews traditional combat in favor of skill checks, dialogue options, and narrative-driven problem solving. Character progression is handled through attributes and skills influenced by a tarot-inspired system, which adds a unique thematic layer to character building. Your choices during character creation and progression meaningfully affect how situations can be resolved, whether through persuasion, intimidation, intellect, or intuition. Visually, the game adopts a stylized, painterly art direction that suits its bleak, industrial tone. Character portraits are expressive and help convey emotion during dialogue-heavy scenes, while environments effectively communicate the oppressive atmosphere of New Victoria . Technical fidelity is modest, but the art style compensates for this, giving the game a cohesive and memorable look. Sovereign Syndicate is a thoughtful, text-heavy RPG that will appeal most to players who value narrative depth, world-building, and moral complexity over action or mechanical complexity. It does not attempt to cater to a broad audience, and that focus is both its greatest strength and its primary limitation. For fans of story-driven CRPGs and players willing to invest time in reading and reflection, Sovereign Syndicate offers a compelling and thematically resonant journey through a dark, industrial world. 7/10 DISASTER | BAD | MEDIOCRE | OKAY | GOOD | GREAT |AMAZING| MASTERPIECE Reviewed on: Win11 Home 64-bit, Intel i5-11600K, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB PRIME, 32GB DDR4-3600 RAM, 2 x Kingston NV1 1TB M.2 NVMe SSD, Internet Broadband 1000/1000 Mbit If you like this review, then please consider giving it a thumbs up. If Fallen London crossed with Disco Elysium sounds like a good thing to you, then buy this game. One thing this studio seems to do fairly well is pick up on the good bits of other games, and mix them up with some extra flavour. 8/10. would recommend for a wet Sunday evening when you don't really want to think about going to work on Monday.

An interesting, and ultimately decent, game. It's clearly influenced by Disco Elysium in specific and narrative RPGs in general. The writing is generally decent-to-good, and it did feel like enough of an RPG that my stats mattered, but I question how much influence you'd truly have across the unfolding of the narrative other than a few choices at the very end. Ultimately, while the core experience of the narrative is good, you can tell the game had a VERY limited budget in most other aspects. I'd still recommend it though, especially on sale. The setting is very fun and interesting, to boot. Gameplay wise, you control 3 characters across the game's 18 chapters, though they actually quite seldom interact. The three characters are all very different sorts of folks, and people react to you very differently. This turns one of the game's weaknesses into a strength: the game world is very limited in size, but the different nature of your 3 characters means people treat you very differently and you have very different perspectives on that world. Each character has stats, but you just choose a general archetype for them which controls the distribution and a starting "perk" of sorts. You increase stats by using them in dialogue, a la skyrim, which works but can lead to your characters all being unable to fail 1 type of roll and not being very good at anything else if you're not careful to keep them rounded. Rolls are made by drawing from a tarot deck, but functionally it's just rolling a d20. The narrative and setting are the highlights, and they are good for the most part. Occasionally it felt like the game moved you along to the same conclusion regardless of your choices, and the lack of ending "slides" giving more information on how your choices impacted the world seemed pretty bizarre, and left the ending a little flat, but I don't have that much to complain about here. The story is the driving force and it provided me motivation enough to finish the game. There are a few areas where the small budget shows clearly, but most of all it's the visuals and especially the music. It's not an especially pretty game, but I've played worse and don't personally mind it. However, there's only about 5 tracks in the game, and all but 1 of them only play in a single location, so you spent the vast majority of your time listening to the same 30 second loop, which does get a bit grating.

I'm enjoying the story and playing the different characters (you end up playing several different people working towards the outcome, very narrative heavy and exploration game, if you like those 2 things you will enjoy this. I just finished all 18 chapters, I enjoyed the story, my best advice would be to use each character you play to explore EVERYTHING, even things you already explored with another character, as the outcome will be different. Go enjoy the Syndicate!

What an absolutely wonderful game, if you like a good read with simple puzzles and option driven txt and replies, with a little magic , you will love this. Not sure everyone will understand the Scottish lass banter and pronunciation but, it's great. Well worth a few £ for this, it's long mind you so, i do hope you love a good read. :)
