I’ve spent quite a bit of time playing this game over the years, and it’s genuinely impressive to see how far it has come, especially considering it started with just one developer. I’m really pleased to see mod support now being added as well. I think this gives the game even more potential, and I really hope it continues to grow and develop for years to come. One of my favourite things is still spending a couple of hours building on a server with other people, meeting players and slowly creating a little community together. That’s where this game really shines for me. The one area I feel is still a bit behind is the hunters. I’d love to see more development and improvements there, as it currently feels like the one part that hasn’t quite kept up with the rest of the game. Overall though, it’s come a long way, has loads of potential, and I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes next.
I and 5 friends have a single save that we have played for 5 years now, we are 250 hours into this save. This game is like a midget punching you in balls every 5-10 minutes. You will never have enough food, ammo, fuel, metals or crystals. The name is so accurate NO MATTER HOW MUCH TIME INVESTED OR HOWW MANY PEOPLE YOU PLAY WITH, YOU WILL NEVER BE COMFORTABLE yet we come back to this game everytime
I love this game! Subsistence is a hardcore survival game. It isn't like Minecraft, where, as soon as you find some sheep, wool, and build a bed and a house, the challenge is over other than some zombies or skellies at nighttime. In Subsistence, you constantly have to be aware, of your surroundings, of your food intake, of the temperature, of predators, Hunters, etc. When I first tried to play, I died over and over. But, as soon as I found a good area to survive in, such as an area with a lake, a pond and some rivers, with waterfalls, that was a game changer. Plants grow around water, Kelp grows in water, animals are drawn to water, you can fish in the lake and pond, and when it gets too hot, you can jump in to cool off. From there, the game progresses and gets better and better. I set my game to 365 days and start in the month of June. That way I don't have to worry about freezing every night, and it's an easier start. I also turn hunters off until I'm better at surviving under such harsh conditions. I can turn hunters back on at any time. The graphics remind me of an oil painting that was beautifully done. It's unique. I'm not writing a long review because I want to go play. So, Yes, I do recommend Subsistence. If you're looking for a change, and a real challenge, you really should try this game.
As someone who has hosted this game many times over the years for our group and has members that have played it 100's of hours, it was difficult but mostly enjoyed the first time or two. The Dev, however, has been too stubborn to add dedicated server options. He finally did give very basic admin tools. He will not add basic setting adjustments games that came out 20 years ago have. He wants you to play it his way only. People can't just fire up a server quick and get into a play through for say the 3rd or 4th time with easier or faster settings enabled. So we pass on playing the game again over and over, because we know the major grind that is in store. The game would be way more likely to be added into groups yearly play rotation if the dev would give dedicated server hosts some flexibility in setting up the world. Then people would look forward to replaying it instead of dreading the time suck and meaningless forced grind imposed by the dev.
