I enjoyed this despite some QOL issues. This is the kind of game that is going to have an absolutely amazing sequel IMO. Pros: Pretty neat story with Very real, very heartfelt subject matter and something interesting to say. Mostly fun gameplay. Nice succinct length, especially for an RPG. Cool world with lots of secrets. Fun puzzles that aren't too difficult. Awesome companion who's skills really play off the main character. Cons: Sluggish and clunky controls for the character switching and platforming. Pretty big difficulty spike for final boss. Several unskippable cutscenes, specifically ones that you have to sit through multiple times (boss intros). Some puzzles and some boss mechanics were opaque or used mechanics that had not been previously established.
Super enjoyable classic zelda style action adventure where you are Death with your trusty steed Pig... yes, Death rides around on a pig, what of it? You are tasked at rounding up some wayward souls and find your lost powers, all while you try and find out who is trying to unravel the world. It's the typical gameplay from this genre, a overworld with some light metroidvania where you might not always be able to go everywhere without specific items or powerrs, secrets to find, dungeons to explore where you often get an upgrade and so on. The combat is fairly basic, the bosses where well designed and all had some unique mechanics to beat, but the rest of the combat was just alright, nothing groundbreaking, and most enemies goes down with 3-4 hits. The writing, the world and the pixelart grahics is what really sell this game. There are also "cheats" built in that you can turn on and off if you need them (including total invulrnability), always nice when devs do that, even if you never actually intend to use them, it shouldn't effect your enjoyment. It's a single player game, who cares if some players need some help at a specific boss fight or not. Also, definitly something to chew on for achievement hunters. Only one is guranteed for playing and finishing the story, the rest are collectables, a speedrun, finding secrets and so on.
I had a great time with Spindle. The game feels very polished, and its love for classic 90s adventure games is unmistakable. From the visuals to the overall design, it clearly draws inspiration from that era, and it does so with a lot of care and attention to detail. The length also feels just right—long enough to stay engaging without overstaying its welcome. That said, the story and dialogue are fairly average and don’t leave a lasting impression, and some of the sound effects can become a bit annoying over time. Still, if you enjoy retro-style adventure games, there’s a good chance you’ll really appreciate what Spindle offers. For me, it was a genuinely enjoyable experience that I wouldn’t want to miss—but I don’t feel like to invest extra time into unlocking all achievements, as the gameplay and world don’t quite support extended replayability.
Spindle is a simpler than most 2d zelda games when it comes to mecanics but somehow, this doesn't reduce the quality of this title. This is thanks to smart level design combined with fact that while simple, the mecanics are still very snappy and fast. I highly recommand for anyone that like 2d zelda like titles.
A really solid Zeldalike with a narrative that works as a meditation on death. Not since Spiritfarer have I seen a narrative with a focus on death & dying that doesn't make me thing "it's allright, but Spiritfarer did it better". Not to say this is like Spiritfarer - it isn't, for one this is combat-focused, but it has it's own identity and a narrative that starts out average, but gets pretty good by the end. Artstyle absolutely gorgeous. Combat is solid, but nothing too complex, puzzles start out pretty easy, but ramps up in difficulty once you hit the third dungeon and towards the end it was pretty tricky - for a Zeldalike at least.
